Paying tribute to Jerry on "Jerry Day" is one thing, but do play THIS song and play it so fucking well. That's why I love Phish. They are perfectionists because they know they need to be. Like the Dead, LOVE Phish. I cry every time I hear this version.
@jackcraddock23039 жыл бұрын
Alex Bieger Right there with you brother: I LOVE the Dead; but I IDOLIZE Phish. The 4 men from Vermont can do and play anything. I am so proud of them (especially Ernesto, III) for coming back in a big way after the unfortunate, albeit necessary, hiatus. The boys are performing at such a high level right now. They are music.

I love both the dead and phish and I hate when people try to compare phish and the dead, they aren't the same band at all... You can't get your dead fix with phish. You can only get your phish fix with phish and I'm addicted to both bands haha and I do love hearing phish pay homage to the dead. Beautiful

Matt Flynn I respect what you are saying: The Dead (even in the guise of the Warlocks) were the greatest, most proficient, technically brilliant, gorgeous musical pioneers in history. Unfortunately, I did not have the privilege of growing up with and around The Dead during their glory days. I am in no way trying to compare or equate Phish with the Dead. I simply appreciated their recognition and remembrance of Jerry at VA Beach with Terrapin, which is an extraordinarily complex and technical song with various movements. I believe The Grateful Dead to be one of--if not the most--formative and influential bands in history. Granted, I also consider Buddy Holly, The Stones, The Heads, The Velvets, Wire, Gang of Four, etc. to garner exceptional accolades, but as far as free form, open-ended, improvisational gorgeous experimentation, The Dead is at the forefront. They created the art of jamming. Are you trying to go to any of the Fare Thee Well shows? Of course it will never be the same, but I'm intrigued...

I lived 5 miles from the venue. Was in the Navy, just got moved to Dam Neck, VA. I was/am a Deadhead, knew nothing about Phish. But I drove through the KOA campground and recognized my people. Stopped to mingle on way home one day and some kind dude offered me a free ticket to this show. I didn’t take it. Saw them for the first time in 2012 and been on the train ever since. Funny how things work sometimes. Stay safe and keep spreading the love people. The world needs more Phish.

Per Brad Sands (old road manager) on the Under The Scales podcast #40, the band spent two hours pre-show learning the song from an audience recording that he had. Two hours. By ear. Think about that for a second. Completely silly.
@fbskier206 жыл бұрын
cdubs1070 when you’re on the road playing as much as those guys do it’s not as difficult as you’d think. Especially for a tune they all presumably love and have heard many times. To me the Floyd harpua is a more difficult feat.

But what I remember most was that Terrapin was about respect. August 9, 1998 was the third anniversary of Jerry Garcia's death. They sang that song as a tribute. I was going nuts and crying all at the same time. I felt honored to be there. It was a special moment.
@TheBuzzsawlenny11 жыл бұрын
when the encore started we got wise to what was happening around the 3rd lick and just kinda got emotional and started all hugging. My friends,acquaintances,and strangers, then we just floated away on the song. At the end people nearby us were visibly and audibly weeping and we were in a great mood. When I think back upon all the phish shows I've been to this always jumps forward as a awwww shit moment! when the crowd lost it will always be something i'm glad I experienced. Miss you jerry...

What I remember most about that concert was Terrapin Station...they did that as an encore. I remember when they went off stage before the encore, and every one was clapping trying to get them back, the roadies put these big pieces of paper on all of the monitors. I could see words on the paper. What I figured was those were all the words to Terrapin, Trey couldn't remember all the words

...is this a SBD? The AUD I've been listening to (which you can also find on youtube) has a very different quality, and this may just be another AUD but the clarity of Trey's voice (and some other elements) and the level of the audience really makes this seem like a SBD that I didn't know was floating around.

@cheapthrillonthetube40275 жыл бұрын
I'm sure Jerry's had hours and hours and hours more practice with this song. Trey probably had, a few? And threw it down at the end of a long show. Lots of people can play Jerry's parts and sing Jerry's Parts without mistakes, but they're not always the same circumstances
