My COMPLETE guide to Terraria 1.4 Journey's End NPC Housing, Happiness & Pylons (for fast travel)!
I cover housing requirements for NPCs including house design ideas (the old prison and a new plan), NPC happiness including biome & neighbour preferences, as well as the awesome new fast travel pylons including how to get them and how to use them.
If you're curious about my new house design, the entire thing is 19 wide x 17 tall. The NPC apartments at the top are each 10 wide x 6 tall (sharing the middle wall).

The npcs are so funny now, they gave them more personality and i love it. Today the arms dealer told me he heard a rumor about a guide doll existing in the in underground and he just wanted to check n maybe put some bullets in it and i was like llool dud i didnt even knew u hated the guide that much.

this video is for npcs including the hardmode ones and the hardmode biomes. so in pre-hardmode you can put the nurse in the forest. the tavernkeep in the underground. the goblin tinkerer and the clothier in the ice biome. thank me later. (also party girl doesn't sell that useful items so just put her in the desert) the rest is the same. Most of them are happy.

Some biome mechanics can make the mutual pairings easier: -Mechanic and Goblin Tinkerer can share a 2-floor house in a Tundra Biome on the border of Surface and Underground, with the floor she lives on at Surface level and his floor Underground. -Nurse and Arms Dealer like each other and their preferred biomes of Desert and Hallow can be combined into a Hallowed Desert (similarly, one can make an Underground Hallow for Demolitionist and Barkeep). -Dryad has mutual positive feelings with Witch Doctor and Truffle, but Truffle can only be in a Surface Mushroom biome and Dryad and Witch Doctor both prefer Jungle, so Truffle lives elsewhere to not mutually hate the Witch Doctor.

Although if you want the mushroom pylon to actually work, you’ll want to move over the guide to the mushroom biome as the truffle likes the guide, and unfortunately for the guide, his happiness is completely irrelevant haha

Nice video, Börk. Also here is something I discovered, any underground biome not made of any type of stone will be seen as the same biome as the surface to the NPC's. However if it is a normal underground NPCs will view it as underground, if it is a hallowed underground NPC's who like the underground over the Hallow will view it as underground and vice versa for other NPCs that preffer the Hallow over the underground

1:45 Non dirt walls as far as I know. I added walls to an underground house to patch the holes, and it worked fine. Autotarget is useful.

You might have to make some slight adjustments for 1.4.1 since how happy they have to be for a Pylon to be bought is more strict.

My favorite part of all this stuff is being in a faraway biome in a large world, making another town for my NPCs when the fucking Travelling Merchant arrives or some boss or an event naturally starts and it makes me feel like the game is designed to slap you in the face for trying to make houses.

Thanks for the vid it helped a lot. So with the truffle should I put him in the above ground world with the dryad or should I keep her in the jungle with the witch doctor. I also took screen shots to help me remember the preference when building their own little town thx a lot your the best

Glad to hear! The relationships are complicated. I generally keep the Dryad in the jungle, there are a few people you can put with the Truffle. Not many situations are completely ideal, so you're going to have to compromise a little on biome and neighbour preferences. Just make sure you don't put them in biomes or with people that they dislike/hate. Check out the wiki links for a more complete reference.

I got another question, how many npcs does it take to be considered over crowded, like what’s the limit?

It actually depends on the game version. Originally (in 1.4.0) you could only have 2 together, 3+ would be overcrowded. So until consoles and mobile get another update (should be coming soon), that still applies for them. Since 1.4.3, the limit was increased to 3 being fine, 4+ being overcrowded. That's what applies now on PC, and will on consoles and mobile when they get the 1.4.3 update.

About one screen's width away. My Desert housing is by an oasis, and my pylon is on the opposite side of said oasis; so even though you can't see my pylon from where my housing is, it still works.
