As my fire salamanders hibernate in their overwintering-terrarium at the moment, I used the chance to renovate the terrarium.
The terrarium size is 120cm x 40cm x 50cm.
This setup is good for salamanders and other terrestrial amphibians.
Setup:
As first layer there is a drainage under the soil: Under the land section is a ~10cm high layer of hydro balls, working as drainage system. The complete layer is coated with a fine filter mat to divide the drainage layer from the earth layer. This setup lets the earth stay humid enough to ensure plantgrowth but won't let the land become marshy. For the water I use a filter which runs a few times per week for a few hours sporadically.
I used a mix of garden and forest soil, including earthworms, woodlouses and other useful microorganisms. Mosses, pieces of old bark and flat stones enable many spots where the salamanders can hide. If you use flat stones, you should be sure that they can not fall down on the salamanders. Ivy is suitable for a humid terrarium, it prospers in my salamander terrarium for over 8 years now.
Before the salamanders move in again, I will give some more bark pieces and dry leaves into the terrarium.
Fire salmanders do not necessarily need as much water as I have in my terrarium, a flat saucer embedded in the ground is enough.
In this terrarium I keep two fire salamanders (Salamandra s. terrestris), occasionally together with three fire-bellied toads.
____
Efeu gedeiht schon seit 8 Jahren in meinem Salamander-Terrarium.

Victoria Stark Hey Victoria, I must admit that I didn't have any problems with too many bugs in my tanks. Usually the salamanders (and the spiders etc. in my other tanks) hunt the bugs etc and keep down the number of insects. May I ask which kind of bugs in pariticular it is, you are having problems with? Sunny greetings from Germany, Nils

This setup looks like a temperate setup. I like this. I frequently see tropical setups and have trouble finding temperate ones. I have a spotted salamander and was thinking of using this type of setup as an inspiration. What type of plants do you have in here?
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's for my fire salamanders, a temperate species. For spotted salamanders I'd also recommend a big amount of lose ground, as they tend to burrow in the ground like most Ambystoma species. I use moss from outside (I'm in Germany) and ivy in this tank.

Absolutely beautiful setup 😍😍😍 I have a few questions... one how do I keep the water clean? And two I used natural moss found in my backyard forest ( I have a large property) and now my terrarium is growing mushrooms... is that bad? Should I remove them?
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! :) In this tank I first used a big external filter (from eheim), that pumped the water from one end (the water part) to the other (into the drainage layer beneath the ground). That's an amazing and super efficient way to filter the water, though it is not really necessary for this salamander tank. So after a few years I switched to a small internal filter (used for tanks of ~10-50 L), which works very good for me. The salamanders don't really use the water section outside the breeding season, so no real filter is necessary in this time. Then it's enough to exchange the water every other week. About the mushrooms: I usually just let them grow, as ling as they look good. They should not hurt the salamanders, but might be used as food source for invertebrate-"tank mates"/feeders (like isopods, slugs, crickets).

Awesome looking set up, could I ask what light source you use for this please, I'm looking to set something similar up for a pair of fire salamanders and trying to find the right balance between light to keep the plants going but not too much heat to harm the sals! Natural light by a window isn't possible in the room I'm keeping these! Thanks

@AquaTerra-Life 4 жыл бұрын
I use a normal daylight neon tube for this tank. But in runs only for 2-3 hours per day, so the salamanders don't get disturbed too much by the bright light. For the plants, it seems to be sufficient.

Wow im very impressed, ive been vigorously researching paludariums and i need help. Can you explain how you separate the land from water/prevent the water from soaking the land section? And explain your underneath drainage system?
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 8 жыл бұрын
+edward bodo I don't really prevent that, the water keeps the land part humid enough so that there can grow moss and other plants. Under the land section is a ~10cm high layer of hydro balls, working as drainage system. The complete layer is coated with a fine filter mat to divide the drainage layer from the earth layer. This setup lets the earth stay humid enough to ensure plantgrowth but won't let the land become marshy. For the water I use a filter which runs a few times per week for a few hours sporadically.
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's more work to set up a drainage layer. And it is easier for the tank's water cycle, the plants can soak the water from the drainage layer under the substrate and if you filter the water, it's easier to keep the whole tank clean.

@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 8 жыл бұрын
+TaQuita Riley Thank you. :) The plant is just normal ivy (Hedera helix). I also used some other vine in this tank before ( I think something like Epipremnum aureum), but it grew too fast and the leaves were to big, so I now only use the normal ivy in this tank. It doesn't grow too fast and the leaves don't become that big. But I'm not sure if it is suitable for a dart frog tank..

@AquaTerra-Life

+myfreestylebmx1 No, the only "barrier" are the big stones you can see. Though I have built an drainage system under the land so that it won't become marshy. Under the land section is a ~10cm high layer of hydro balls, working as drainage system. The complete layer is coated with a fine filter mat to divide the drainage layer from the earth layer. +Aquarium and Terrarium Life So, say i gathered moss from outside and filled a 10 gallon it. I placed a good layer or gravel and sprayed it every three days. will it grow? what lighting does the moss require, would a white florescent work?
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 8 жыл бұрын
If the gravel stays humid and 3 days are enough to keep the moss humid from above (I guess it should), that should work. You can place the tank next to a window, then it will get enough sunlight. I'm not sure if a florescent would work, too. That depends on the lumen and if it fills the blue and red spectrum of daylight.

Hi I'm thinking of getting a reptile what's better a tiger salamander or a leopard gecko
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 8 жыл бұрын
+Dark Panther Hi man! That depends completely on what you'd like more and what you can offer your future pet. First of all, a tiger salamander is not a reptile, it's an amphibian. Tiger salamanders need much ground to burrow, a small water part or a water dish and don't like too high temperatures. A Leopard Gecko is a small gecko, that loves warm temperatures and needs a desert/hot steppe like tank. They are both relatively easy pets, but are completely different. :)

i got a few questions. first, can I just use plant soil? second, for small salamanders that grow up to 10 cm, could i use a 8'' long, 6'' wide and 3'' high terrarium? third of all,do terrestrial salamanders need water? and last of all, do salamanders need plants or sticks to climb up?
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Josia, You can use plant soil, if there are no additional ingredients. But when there are some fertilizers or something else in the soil, you cannot use it, it could be harmful for the salamander. For a long-term tank, it should be a little bigger. Also because terrestrial salamanders like to burrow, and a height of 3" would be to less. Terrestrial salamanders don't need a big water part, a small water bowl, that is always filled with water, is enough. Most salamanders do not climb that much. Only arboreal species need this necessarily. Most species are living directly on or in the ground.

where do you get your moss from?

Michaela Lowder I just take it from outside. You can find giant amounts of moss in forests. :)

+Brian Bloomfield That sucks, do you have woodlice, springtails and other small inverts in your tank? And live plants? They all contribute to a small but functional ecosystem. This helps to prevent mold.

I don't have any of those introduced and that may be the problem. I'll have to consider trying them but If they escape can they infest your house?
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 8 жыл бұрын
These small organisms are important when it comes to a working microsystem. I don't think so. Most of them need slightly humid conditions, they would dry out if they escaped, I guess. Though you should of course try to make it as hard as possible for anything to escape of your tank, but that is also for live food like crickets or slugs.^^

Yeah, you can also use this kind of substrate, As long as the salamanders have the chance to dig a little, it should be okay.

What would u do for maintenance on this
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 7 жыл бұрын
I don't really do much on this. It runs good on itself. Sometimes I need to add some water, that's it. :D If you want moss to stay alive, you need to keep it moist (not wet) by spraying. Plus sometimes I exchange the water in the water part of the tank.

+Adam Jones Hey Adam. Do you already have set up the tanks? If so, could you upload pictures or a video of them? For marbled newts JHC has made a great setup (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZSrd5-nqsmtrc0), For tiger salamanders you can do something like in my setup above. Be sure to put in ground in which the salamader can dig and burrow. Salamanders need a realtively high level of humidity, though the tank should not be completely wet. Tigers don't want a swampy ground. They like to bath in water bowl sometimes, but usually they hide in the ground or under bark. Would be great if you could upload pics of your setups. :) -Nils

@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the only things I clean are the water part and the and the glass. Glass I just wash with a wet sponge, the dirty water runs down into the ground from where it can run into the water part. In the water I use a small filter which I clean every few weeks when it needs to be cleaned. And then I have to fill in some water every few weeks. That's all. ;)

Thank you for your kind attention. I know, that it is not welcome to most people, to keep different species together. But as they have enough space in their tank to avoid each other, and as the toads are way aquatic while the salamanders stay on the terrestrial part, I don't see a problem in keeping them together (under these circumstances only). I keep them together for more than 5 years now and I never had any problems.

Thank you, you're very kind in telling me that, most people are very harsh when it comes to this topic. Though I still will not seperate them, I kept the seperate before and after a short period of acclimatization they behaved completely normal, as before. Both species are active and mate succesfully. Of course, when there would be any problems, I would seperate them directly! I have the capacity to keep them in seperate tanks, if needed.

How does one prevent mold?
@AquaTerra-Life
@AquaTerra-Life 8 жыл бұрын
+Rick stickmen The microfauna prevents mold. I keep many woodlice, springtails, earthworms and many more small invertebrates in all my tanks, they eat remaining food and also faeces. So they keep the tanks clean.
