I’m surprised at all the non-supportive comments, “Less is more”, “overdone”, “ruined the original”. His interpretation is not trying to “be better” than the original. It’s a completely different take to the original that it becomes his own. Stop comparing it to the original. It’s not sacrilege to modify Sultans of Swing. Lol. I understand the less is more philosophy. I happen to think the solo at the end of Comfortably Numb is one of the best solos ever and it’s not overly technical. But it is exactly the technicality and runs performed here that I really like, it’s well done for what it is. I think it’s genius. Let’s be honest, some of the comments are by guitar players who are envious of this guy because they can never play like this guy.

Absolutely correct. However it feels hard for me to take buskers seriously who pander to the audience with their setlists, and Sultans is definetly a certified boomer classic.

This is not Sultans of swing but an amazing idea of exploration of ideas over the same progression and song structure. So you are right, there’s no point in comparing.

The improvisation by Miguel, the additions, and take-offs while returning to the root of the piece are indicative of the talent of this young man. He takes us on a virtual tour of Sultans with more chord progressions than the ear can imagine, and returns to the original seamlessly; a sign of a very accomplished musician.

I cannot begin to explain my admiration for Miguel Montalban. This man, not only has extraordinary guitar techniques, but is able to phrase them into tearing and heart-ripping melodic arrangements. It's a very personal opinion, but his musical sense resonates through me and through I believe a lot of people. His music profoundly touches me where a very few things do. Miguel Montalban, I don't where you are at the moment or how you are doing, but I wish you all the best.

Rather than replicating a song made by somebody else, you did your own thing, your own arrangement. This level of execution takes years and years of dedication, patience, practice and more practice and even more practice. KUDOS to you dear Severus Snape. No doubt, must have watched it 100 times! ALL of his work is amazing. His interpretations of various songs are imaginative adaptations and showcase his talent very well. People that complain "he doesn't play it like the original" are missing the point. I can already listen to Knoffler's flawless original any time I want. This is a different thing, and it's amazing. I LOVE his JJ Cale "Cocaine" cover too. It depresses me to see people walk past so much talent without stopping to listen.

The most awesome cover of Sultans of Swing I've ever seen on the internet. No, it's not just a 'cover', it's underestimate. It's his own 'interpretation' of the piece. I have to say so because all the other covers (of the piece) are just mere 'covers' , that is, mere 'copies', but this guy plays it in his way . Amazing ! He made the piece much more colorful by giving it a Latin touch in some parts. My jaw dropped all through the listening. My Goodness ! Why does he play on a street? Why doesn't he make his album? Why doesn't he do real concerts?

Miguel not only played his very own version of Sultans of Swing, he picked that song up, threw it in the air, slashed it out of the air with his guitar & slammed it into the permanent memory of that street corner forever. When I was young everyone was required to play an instrument of some sort at least one year, usually either in elementary school or high school or both. I think the problem is that people these days have 0% exposure to real music and have never even tried to play a real instrument. People are totally ignorant of how hard it is to even play a guitar in a mediocre fashion, and this guy just crushed it. One of the best covers I have ever heard.

Wow, as the author of the video I feel I have to comment on all the comments that my video has received, Miguel playing as he does is like Marmite.....you either love it or hate it.......personally I love what he does but appreciate that his music is not to everyone's taste.....I could listen to him all day (and often do by playing his CD's) I could also stand there watching him, he's amazing and to hear him play is a million times better than what you see or hear on my video. My husband and I heard his music in the distance as we walked down Oxford Street in London, it was amazing so we had to cross the road to see who it was playing, I was hooked from the first note I heard him play...........I am so happy that we stumbled across Miguel playing in London and I can't wait to see him play again!

You did a great job posting this. Awesome guitar player, and on the street! Even Mr. Mark Knopfler himself I guess would feel good for the justice done really well in his music.

Don't worry about the trolls. Their comments only speak for who they are not you, the artist, or the vid. Question: Who's more likely to leave a hateful remark; an expert guitarist or a failed guitarist? A person who's on the path to their dreams or a person who's given up? The haters hate themselves and justify it to the world behind the safety of an anonymous screen name. THANKS FOR UPLOADING!!!

Thanks so much Terri for making the effort to post such a wonderful video and to share your experience . I found it while searching KZbin for guitar solos/instrumentals and became hooked instantly . The song is an all time great and his interpretation of it is superb. He is an extremely talented musician and a great performer and I often wonder why such talent does not seem to get the recognition that it deserves. I have been learning guitar myself for some time and appreciate his skill. Two others that were previously unknown to me before KZbin- Tommy Emanuel and Justin Johnson are well worth listening to.Thanks again for sharing your fantastic experience -Mike

At first, wanted to state 'over embellished', but that's unfair. That young man understands one of the greatest bits of music ever pulled out of strings. He clearly can play. Note body language, even his feet say 'concentration' and 'focus'; pure confidence. We don't need identical covers, we know how it goes, interpretations are what prove great music.

By far the greatest guitarist I have seen on youtube. Usually shredders have little sense of musicality. This guy can shred with the best of them and with artistry to match. Who is better electric guitar player (limit to rock/hard rock genre)? Paul Gilbert or this guy?

It's called an interpretation. It's the musician's interpretation of the song. He is not trying to play sultans note for note. Even when knopfler plays it night after night he doesn't play it note for note. What kind of world would we live in if every artist copied the next. Why would we need more than one artist in any discipline. This guitarist is extraordinary.

I've seen SO many guitar solo videos, and this one is possibly my favorite of all time. Not sure how it doesn't have much more love. The variety of licks and the phrasing (most of the time) seems absolutely incredible. Pretty sweet tone too, with a little bit of variety as well.

I bought Sultans of Swing when it was released on 45rpm vinyl and was overjoyed when Dire Straits made it big time. I've seen and heard this track played in many different clubs and pubs in Europe and always done very well. Not until I began to notice (on KZbin) all the videos of street musicians performing this track did I realise how popular it was or how well each individual could play it and in so many differently interpreted ways. This is one of the best and hats off to you Sir. I wish I'd have been there on the day

Guitars popular enough that id put it at more like 5k-20k(theres always tons of not popular but extreme guys), clearly this guys top level skilled, but id say about 99.8% of any given skill never reach the top, the very frontier of skill, usually because it takes 6+ years of 4+hours a day training combined with science, (anytime your learning high level shit you gotta take a fucking scalpel to every aspect the skill has even to minute details and fully flesh them out), combined with someone smart enough, to even get to forefront. Just because the bar is always so high by people who have done all that before, for generations.

Brilliant rendition. Incredible touch and skill. Old guys stand crying while a busker in his twenties plays a rendition of “Sultans of Swing” on an electric guitar at Oxford Circus Tube entrance better than Knopfler, fluent and fast, brilliant performance caught mid-commute as most walk by and some toss coins into the guitar case. No swagger to the kid, just skill, touch, and tone in a beautiful display of virtuosity. Amazing stuff.

The old saying "less is more" comes to mind. This guy clearly knows the scales but better than Mark? Nowhere near comparable. I can't even say that was Sultans as he only used it as a backing track and played a couple of the couple of chords. Not hating on the guy I'm just saying playing fast scales doesn't make him a musician
