Frank should've made a film version of THING-FISH, a mock-opera with cheesy-looking sets. He went to a lot of trouble to have the Mammy Nun make-ups made for the album's cover (with Ike Willis as the titular character), as well as for a photo-shoot that was done for Larry Flynt's HUSTLER magazine based on this material, so it's a shame that a show wasn't presented -- at least one filmed production of this supposed Off-Off-Broadway musical-within-a-musical. It might've made for a zany midnight movie experience, though I wonder if Dale Bozzio would've been game to portray her 'Artificial Rhonda' character with a fountain pen dangling out of her asshole as she fucks her briefcase in her attempts to humiliate her fashionably gay husband Harry. Their "Mother Mary & Joseph" relationship with their 'offspring' -- the lil' Crabgrass Baby -- would probably have made the heads of indignant Evangelical Christians explode, but alas! we never got to see a more 'popular' presentation of this 3-album extravaganza. Zappa's JOE'S GARAGE would've made for an entertaining low-budget film, too. And I would kill to see an animated cartoon of "The Adventures of Gregary Peccary" -- preferably designed by the equivalent of Chuck Jones on acid.

Love your videos! I have one disagreement in your list. Bob Dylan's 'Self Portrait' is almost universally panned, but Self Portrait is one of my favorite of Dylan's LP. Perhaps I like it so much because when I heard it, I was also listening to the Anthology of American Folk Music, which was a major influence to the Folk revival of the late 50's early 60's. Self Portrait sound like an artist channeling an Appalachian front porch. Highlights for me are 'Early Morning Rain', 'Let It Be Me', 'Copper Kettle'.

*Alex Chilton - Like Flies On Sherbert* - Big Star's Third Album (a.k.a Sister Lovers) was for me the missing link - it's exhilarating, aching, abstract, dark, beautiful, sinister, playful, fragile, quirky, shambolic, endlessly inventive with songs that burned into my sub-conscious. It was The White Album, only better. Yet after Third, the sporadic albums that did come out were seemingly set to destroy the Big Star legacy. 1980's *Like Flies On Sherbet* is grotesque, boorish and misogynist, and the production values are nil. But it's this maverick streak that made Alex such a compelling figure. And even though Like Flies on Sherbet may be one of the ugliest albums you'll ever hear, there's still a place for it, it's still Alex.

Nevertheless Pin Ups is far away from being a bad album. I like everything on it except Sorrow. Cover albums are mostly crap, but the Bowie one is the best of them all. Nonetheless it's Bowie's worst album from the 70s, but that's more because Bowie's output was so stellar back then.
@marclahn70722 жыл бұрын
PINUPS is fantastic! Excellent arrangements, ear candy production, Ronson's guitar up in the mix, Bowie's powerful, dramatic pipes, Dunbar's killer drumming and some excellent unique takes on those great 60s tracks (eg See Emily Play, I Wish You Would, Rosalyn, Friday On My Mind, Sorrow, Don't Bring Me Down, Shapes of Things, Where Have All The Good Times Gone). All great and as per usual, David Bowie makes them his own, in spectacular fashion PINUPS obviously isn't Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Hunky Dory, Young Americans, Low, Station To Station, TMWSTW or Ziggy, but I have personally "loved it" since buying it as a young kid in the 70s...and I still do...just as much. *Add in the stunning, "ultimate Rock star photography" of not only the front cover, but back cover as well, and to me you've got a real classic moment LP of the decade. Might be a covers album, but in Bowie's hands, it's one many other artists would kill for. ⚡

I think it, yet again, could be considered an Edward solo album. He even sings on the closings number. Nothing wrong with any of the tracks. The combination of Metallica and Lou Reed was not supposed to be commercial. It was a melding of two styles of musicianship. I see METAL MACHINE MUSIC was not mentioned. Frank Zappa is my idol and inspiration in life but you'll get no howls from me. I disagree that some of his later albums are forgettable, with the exception of Thing-Fish. Thing-Fish is arguably the closest Frank ever came to releasing a lazy album. But of course, it's also a double album, which makes it somewhat difficult to call it "lazy". But it IS lazy in the sense that it reuses old songs and largely throws out melody and instead allows Ike Willis to blabber on relentlessly in an extremely annoying and, in my opinion, unfunny voice. It's an album intended to offend the fuck out of people, but I'm personally only offended by how boring it is. Still, out of 120+ albums, having only one stinker in your discography is not exactly a bad record. It's phenomenal!

Van Halen III was unfortunate. As an Extreme fan, I was intrigued to hear what Gary Cherone could bring to the VH fold. I liked Hagar, loved Roth - but then I heard Gary 'trying' to sound like Hagar! He's got the best voice of the previous two, but regretfully lowered himself to mimic Sammy's rasp. Whether this was a choice he made, or influenced by Eddie, I don't know. Didn't help that the music was mediocre, and lyrics were mostly abysmal. The few 'decent' tracks I can get behind are From Afar (love this one), Once and to a lesser extent, Without You. Everything else is rubbish.

Some strange choices here. A lot of little known albums. Shame you didn't mention Still's great, great album 'Manassas'.

Fortunately, I've never heard any of these. Ok, I gave Lulu a try. Made it several minutes...
