Frank should've made a film version of THING-FISH, a mock-opera with cheesy-looking sets. He went to a lot of trouble to have the Mammy Nun make-ups made for the album's cover (with Ike Willis as the titular character), as well as for a photo-shoot that was done for Larry Flynt's HUSTLER magazine based on this material, so it's a shame that a show wasn't presented -- at least one filmed production of this supposed Off-Off-Broadway musical-within-a-musical. It might've made for a zany midnight movie experience, though I wonder if Dale Bozzio would've been game to portray her 'Artificial Rhonda' character with a fountain pen dangling out of her asshole as she fucks her briefcase in her attempts to humiliate her fashionably gay husband Harry. Their "Mother Mary & Joseph" relationship with their 'offspring' -- the lil' Crabgrass Baby -- would probably have made the heads of indignant Evangelical Christians explode, but alas! we never got to see a more 'popular' presentation of this 3-album extravaganza. Zappa's JOE'S GARAGE would've made for an entertaining low-budget film, too. And I would kill to see an animated cartoon of "The Adventures of Gregary Peccary" -- preferably designed by the equivalent of Chuck Jones on acid.

Love your videos! I have one disagreement in your list. Bob Dylan's 'Self Portrait' is almost universally panned, but Self Portrait is one of my favorite of Dylan's LP. Perhaps I like it so much because when I heard it, I was also listening to the Anthology of American Folk Music, which was a major influence to the Folk revival of the late 50's early 60's. Self Portrait sound like an artist channeling an Appalachian front porch. Highlights for me are 'Early Morning Rain', 'Let It Be Me', 'Copper Kettle'.

VH III definitely belongs on this list. It was weird to listen to a Van Halen album where there isn't any sort of catchy riff or anything melodic about any of it. It was almost as if they just took some ideas Edward had put on a tape while screwing around in the studio and decided to make an album out of it. Totally disjointed musically.

I don't have Thoroughfare Gap, but the title track was included on the CSN box set. I have to say, I think it's quite good. I ended up getting Right By You based on the track 50/50 also included in the set (featuring an excellent guitar solo from Jimmy Page), and I found the album to be pretty mediocre otherwise. I guess I don't feel so bad now that I never picked up TG.

*Alex Chilton - Like Flies On Sherbert* - Big Star's Third Album (a.k.a Sister Lovers) was for me the missing link - it's exhilarating, aching, abstract, dark, beautiful, sinister, playful, fragile, quirky, shambolic, endlessly inventive with songs that burned into my sub-conscious. It was The White Album, only better. Yet after Third, the sporadic albums that did come out were seemingly set to destroy the Big Star legacy. 1980's *Like Flies On Sherbet* is grotesque, boorish and misogynist, and the production values are nil. But it's this maverick streak that made Alex such a compelling figure. And even though Like Flies on Sherbet may be one of the ugliest albums you'll ever hear, there's still a place for it, it's still Alex.

Nevertheless Pin Ups is far away from being a bad album. I like everything on it except Sorrow. Cover albums are mostly crap, but the Bowie one is the best of them all. Nonetheless it's Bowie's worst album from the 70s, but that's more because Bowie's output was so stellar back then.
@marclahn7072
@marclahn7072 2 жыл бұрын
PINUPS is fantastic! Excellent arrangements, ear candy production, Ronson's guitar up in the mix, Bowie's powerful, dramatic pipes, Dunbar's killer drumming and some excellent unique takes on those great 60s tracks (eg See Emily Play, I Wish You Would, Rosalyn, Friday On My Mind, Sorrow, Don't Bring Me Down, Shapes of Things, Where Have All The Good Times Gone). All great and as per usual, David Bowie makes them his own, in spectacular fashion PINUPS obviously isn't Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Hunky Dory, Young Americans, Low, Station To Station, TMWSTW or Ziggy, but I have personally "loved it" since buying it as a young kid in the 70s...and I still do...just as much. *Add in the stunning, "ultimate Rock star photography" of not only the front cover, but back cover as well, and to me you've got a real classic moment LP of the decade. Might be a covers album, but in Bowie's hands, it's one many other artists would kill for. ⚡

BYRDMANIAX I find very experimental and interesting. To me SWEETHEARTS OF THE RODEO is utter rubbish. Van Halen 3 is another one that is shit upon by everyone. I think it, yet again, could be considered an Edward solo album. He even sings on the closings number. Nothing wrong with any of the tracks. The combination of Metallica and Lou Reed was not supposed to be commercial. It was a melding of two styles of musicianship. I see METAL MACHINE MUSIC was not mentioned. CCR 's swansong MARDI GRAS sounds a bit more like traditional country music than their catalog. The contribution from other members is very honorable.

Frank Zappa is my idol and inspiration in life but you'll get no howls from me. I disagree that some of his later albums are forgettable, with the exception of Thing-Fish. Thing-Fish is arguably the closest Frank ever came to releasing a lazy album. But of course, it's also a double album, which makes it somewhat difficult to call it "lazy". But it IS lazy in the sense that it reuses old songs and largely throws out melody and instead allows Ike Willis to blabber on relentlessly in an extremely annoying and, in my opinion, unfunny voice. It's an album intended to offend the fuck out of people, but I'm personally only offended by how boring it is. Still, out of 120+ albums, having only one stinker in your discography is not exactly a bad record. It's phenomenal!

I'd agree with all of your picks but I do find Allman and Woman to be a guilty pleasure. I dig Gregg and the Cher of the 60's/70's, so as bad as the album is, I enjoy it.

I really like Zombie Birdhouse. Far better than the awful Party. Now that is a bad album!

when are you going to do a top 5 gary glitter album ranking or even better, rolf harris? I don't think either of them married any of the children they were abusing at age 13 though

I haven't heard the album but I do like Allman and woman's cover of Love me from T.O.G.W.T and the less said about Lulu the better, a disaster on every level.

Played ALLMAN AND WOMAN on radio -- briefly -- when it came out. What was ANYBODY thinking?! We kinda figured Gregg woke up one day in Vega$, realized he was outta smack, looked over and there was Cher in bed...and they were MARRIED! What else you gon' do but shoot up SOMETHING and go make an elpee?!

I avoided that album for years based on its critical reputation. But it's not bad at all. Good choice of songs and Gregg and Cher both have the pipes. Give it another listen. I think the cover influenced a lot of people.

I've heard a few of these, but not many. I was a loyal follower of Iggy until Zombie Birdhouse. Blah, tried to like it, couldn't. Self Portrait was one of the early records that I owned -- I believe I got it as a birthday present with Paul McCartney 's first solo album. Self Portrait was a puzzler; there was nothing on it to justify Dylan's huge reputation. I have since come to admire his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain". Nobody likes Thing Fish, not even hardcore Zappa fans like me. Oddly, there are some very nice jackets in this assortment. Byrdmaniax, from the days before computer art, is especially nice.

I agree with Thing Fish. Traumatisingly bad. I understand that it’s satirical, but it’s still wildly unpleasant.

have got the original UK vinyl box set, original UK cassette & the original UK fatbox cd of this album..... Zappa was always very brave and pushed the limits as much as he could..... a bitter pill for many but sweet wine for the rest !

Racists find it quite unpleasant. The purpose of Thing Fish's satire is to show how is black People viewed and treated by the oh so compassionate white liberals.

Zombie Birdhouse isn't terrible IMHO. It's uneven, yes, but there are some good tracks on there. There are plenty of much worse albums by Iggy Pop, e.g. Party, Beat 'Em Up, Naughty Little Doggie, Skull Ring.

Much as I love Steve Harley, IMHO *Hobo With A Grin* is quite possibly the worst album ever released by a major act. Apart from the terrible songs and awful production, the vocals are just dreadful! Amazing in hindsight that his star faded so quickly after he disbanded Cockney Rebel, this album and the marginally better follow up The Candidate show how far his stock had fallen, but great to see that he came back strongly and as charismatic as ever.

Van Halen III was unfortunate. As an Extreme fan, I was intrigued to hear what Gary Cherone could bring to the VH fold. I liked Hagar, loved Roth - but then I heard Gary 'trying' to sound like Hagar! He's got the best voice of the previous two, but regretfully lowered himself to mimic Sammy's rasp. Whether this was a choice he made, or influenced by Eddie, I don't know. Didn't help that the music was mediocre, and lyrics were mostly abysmal. The few 'decent' tracks I can get behind are From Afar (love this one), Once and to a lesser extent, Without You. Everything else is rubbish.
