@@alecmullaney7957 Look at the way he had them on, then think if you spun them all the way around. To where they "look backwards" that's how they're meant to be. I didn't know this until I started playing with people who play banjo. They use them right. Every guitar player, at least ones who play metal, almost *always* put them on backwards.

The “biscuit” pick is a felt pick mainly used by ukulele and nylon players. They don’t have that ugly click you get with hard picks on nylon strings. You also had the finger picks round the wrong way - the pick side goes over your fingerprint side rather than the nail side. I didn’t know this for the longest time and assumed they didn’t work, I’ve tried them around the right way and they’re still pretty shit.

Kinda using the thumb pick weird as well - they are almost entirely used for fingerpicking acoustic guitar although of course you can flat pick with them too... but he didn't demo fingering with it in the video so kinda missed the main use case. Fred Kelly thumb picks are my favourite so far for fingerstyle but also the dunlops are great.

absolutely true! It's like you said very rare, but for me with some strumming parts it sounds great, because (if you mic the guitar) you can actually hear the pic, flicking against the next string, which can add an extra layer of a kinda percussive sound. For "regular" playing it's absolutely no use and especially for beginner players it's a strict no-no, I give my students a proper pick when they show up with such a flimsy pick.

"It's slightly better than having paper." Mate, the number of times....The number of times....As much as being prepared does help in most situations, there will be times when you are on-site, and you end up playing with a business card, or with a folded paper you tore out of someone's notebook. If you do any sort of travelling or camping, this will happen eventually. Really, you cannot truly be called a journeyed guitarist until you need to play with a business card, or with a folded paper you tore out of someone's notebook.

The .46 nylon is great for spanky funk stuff, but you have to adjust for the lack of tension in the pick. So you have to pick on a part of the strings that will make up for the lack of tension. You have to learn to tame it. Having said all that .5mm red Tortex is much stiffer and can achieve the same effect. Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them!

Thin picks like the first one are incredible for bass. They do something magical to the mids on a regular clean ish bass. And they have consistent dynamics like you mentioned, which is a plus in some cases. Also, they're great for flatwound strings with a mute at the bridge. Instant old school bass tone. That being said, definitely not for heavier music with gallops and fast picking and tight timing. And not too useful for guitars. Biscuit pick could be a felt pick, which is also cool for old school bass tones.

Want a horror story? Steve Vai once recounted a show he played with Zappa, long, long ago during which he had "the worst case of diarrhea he'd had in his entire life." Steve, being very young and unwilling to upset Zappa, decided he'd never, under any circumstances, back out of a gig. So Steve Vai played that show, truck ties fastening him to a metal dolly with his asshole pressed up against a large suction cup running into a bucket behind him, shitting continuously, for thirty five minutes. Edit: It seems I've been called out on the JD .46mm. I've worked my way towards thinner and thinner picks after starting with the thickest I could find. I also used to play Jazz 13s, and a similar thing happened. The super, super thin picks have what Gilbert called the "thwappy" tone. I've noticed it myself. To keep the pick somewhat rigid for hard/ fast strumming, I tend to flex it into a slight U shape as I play. For everything else, you're supposed to let the pick thwap around a bit.

I used to use those thin Dunlop picks on an acoustic 12 string that I played for years. They're good for strumming chords because heavier picks can get too loud and can drown out some of the natural harmonics. I'd never dream of using one for lead playing, regardless of whether or not it's an acoustic or electric guitar. But for strumming on a 12 string, they sound fantastic. I don't own the guitar anymore, so I haven't seen one of those things in years!

@@francinebacone1455 Yeah those guitars use much lighter gauge strings than a typical 6-string acoustic, and the sound is just heavenly. I remember around the 5150/OU812 era, Eddie Van Halen was using a personalized version of those ultra thin nylon Dunlops. Guitar Player Magazine got ahold of one for a "picks of the stars" type article, and they claimed at the time it was the thinnest pick they'd seen. I don't think it lasted long..He usually used mediums before, and after. I think he may have gotten turned onto them initially for ease of doing his trills, but then he was always experimenting. Never seen that "biscuit pick" though! Looks like something old and perplexing you'd find between sofa cushions!

Fender medium white picks for me. Not even the same medium fenders in colors because the multi-color picks would break along the color lines at the most inconvenient times. Plus you can see then white ones if the lights are dim. Any thicker than the medium makes me feel like I am going to break a string. It responds quick enough that I can strum or single-note without worry. The blue ones always seem to wear out faster. Even if I get silly with pick slides with the medium whites, at least I know where the grooves are while the rest of the pick still holds up. Fender medium whites hell yeah!

For me, the thin JD nylon picks have only one application - strumming chords on acoustic guitar. It's equivalent to using brushes on a drum. I learned this while playing live and trying to transition between strumming chords and picking single notes. It was bad - as mentioned in this video, the delay between putting the pick on the string and when it releases upsets your timing.

It's a lot more comfortable than your nail being pulled up and for some things it's a lot easier than a flat pick. I've found the metal propiks to be decent enough, some people need the various pick grip things though to help hold fingerpicks on.

Pick material is not a big problem for electric guitars because they use metal strings but it is for other types of strings. In that case you don't choose the pick material for "the tone bro" but for its hardness. What happens when you hit a hard material against a softer one? Usually the soft one lose the fight. Bass nylon wound strings or tapewound, ukuleles and classic guitars (real acoustic guitars or guitars that don't bend themselves in 10 years) have soft strings so you must use soft picks or the string lifespan will suffer. If the strings are made of nylon you must use nylon picks or softer. That's when the biscuit pick becomes handy. It's actually a felt pick (check Jim Dunlop website) to have a softer option than nylon. They are not made to last, they are made to make your soft strings to last.

Those really soft picks are especially useful for fast rhythm strumming, especially if you've got a nice big acoustic guitar with nice big strings and you're trying to let other acoustic instruments have a say at the jam. Like... try playing PFF by Hank III with a stubby Jazz III and you'll realize the folly of your ways.

Almost all of these picks are fine, actually. They all have their purposes, depending on styles and situations, and you just haven't figured them out yet. That's okay. But they're definitely "you" problems. You put the fingerpicks on backwards for Pete's sake!

I play JD only, but just the 1mm. For me it's perfect, not too stiff for strumming chords, not too wobbly fpr playing fast single notes. But after all it comes to taste and application, a buddy of mine used the .46 for strumming on .13s, but he was ok with it and it didnt sound bad, so..

For me, if it bends at all, it’s trash. I like 1.14mm - 3mm picks. I typically use my Big Stubbys because I like how they glide across the strings whether I’m playing guitar or bass. Plus the concave grips and overall thickness...just muaahhhh! But I do switch it up. It’s really just a bunch of Dunlop Flow picks that I use. Not that I have any brand loyalty. I bought a bunch online and they worked except the useless paper thin ones, and yeah. If it’s not broke dont fix it. I’m open to recommendations though if there are any wonder picks/plectrums that I haven’t come across.

If you're going to use thumb picks, I'd recommend a National thumb pick for the shorter blade or a BlueChip JD Crowe for the same reason (but those cost $40. Very much worth it, but 40 bucks is 40 bucks). To me, a shorter blade feels more natural and translates better to plucking with a bare thumb. A longer blade either has you holding your thumb high unnaturally high over the string or scraping your instrument's body with the tip. I like to pluck a banjo on the side. Check out Ernie Ball Pickey Picks if you wanna try some finger picks. They're easily bendable to match the shape and contours of your fingers and nice and pointy, so you only get the very tip of the pick on the string; instead of trying anything with those awful spoon-style fingerpicks. Though, I'd recommend not using any kind of fingerpick for guitar. It just doesn't sound right. 2mm of nail is enough with which to fingerpick and short enough to not interfere with daily activities. Contour the nail so the rounded peak of the nail is in line with the strings in relation to the angle of your hand when fingerpicking to avoid scraping sounds, and voila; natural fingerpicks. Classical and Flamenco guitarists actually use the flesh of the fingertip to pluck, but those guitars have wider string spacing. Also, as many other have mentioned herein; you're wearing your fingerpicks backward.

Gravity picks, Graph Tech Tusq picks, Dunlop Flow picks and Ernie Ball Prodigy picks are all the best IMO with Gravity being the absolute best.

The biscuit pick is felt they were used years ago on basses with flat wound strings they work better for that, but still a terrible pick, although I know a bassist who uses them exclusively and they work well for her, on her Hofner basses.

Once you go with a Jazz 3, you'll never look back. Bonamassa and Petrucci are hooked.

i hate thin picks too, but i found them useful when im trying to adjust the string action as some sort of measurment tool 😂if it fits in between the strings, then i know my action is nice and low

Also the picks that goes on your fingers, you're wearing them backwards! theyre not suppose to be like nails, but rather extensions of your finger which is why they have that curve
