I have been a diehard movie and theater fanatic since I was 6. I have a mind-blowing movie collection, and I have the VHS of "Permanent Record" from 1988. I have followed the careers of Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Rubin due to this film. I worked at PARAMOUNT PICTURES STUDIOS for over 20 years and had the honor of meeting Jennifer Rubin! I am now in my 60's. I wish I had someone to leave my amazing movie library with. They are all in MINT condition!

Thank you for this. I remember sitting with my mom and a box of tissues. We were crying our eyes over this movie. My mom loved to hear me sing this song. She has since passed away from a battle with cancer. Every time I hear this song or sing it I think of her and it's so true she will never die. She will always live in my heart.

I remember my older brother had the soundtrack of this film on vinyl back in the late '80s and used to play this song so much. He loved this film back in the day and he had depression and played this song a lot. I remember when he moved out, he left behind his VHS copy of this film. I kept it and still have it. His life got better. I have had depression since a little kid and play this song from time to time. I just learned it by ear on the trumpet, using this version as the J.D. Souther version is in a different key, I just finished writing down the notation for this song since there's no sheet music available anywhere. It's notation that I can understand because I'm pretty sure it's not exactly 100% correct but now I can play this song on my trumpet.

I remember watching this in Decisions class with Ms. Stoltz in the 80's, it broke my heart and still does to know that people are so overwhelmed by Life that the only answer is for them to end their own. As someone else commented, it doesn't end the pain, it just passes it to someone else.

This song will always be placed in my mind sung this way. I got a call from my mom to come to the hospital A.S.A.P because my grandfather was not doing so well. He was my father figure since my father was a dork and didn't want to have anything to do with me after my mom and him divorced when I was a infant. My grandfather was everything to me. He had surgery and I drove like a bat out of hell to get there, When I was driving I was praying and crying and this song popped into my head, and When I got to his room the doctor told us they couldn't get his blood pressure up and he lost his other leg, and he had so many complications, that he wouldn't wake up, so my mom and I agreed we didn't want him hurt any more and he held my hand, with my mom and I crying and tears streaming down our eyes, the Words "You will never die" kept coming in my head. He had a tear that came fro his own eye as he passed and his hand held mine. Driving home was the longest drives when we only lived like 20 minuted away it felt a life time. All the while I kept hearing this song. I know I fell apart since I no longer had my one true figure of a father.. But the song helped me through.

I saw this when I was in high school shortly after a friend ended his own life; at the time the school administration responded exactly the way they did in this movie. It broke out hearts and outraged us. I am now finishing up my 24th year teaching and we had an incredibly loved student end his own life in January and our administration reacted the exact same way they did in this movie. I broke our heats and outraged us. Sad this movie is still incredibly relevant.
