@mottledbrain4 жыл бұрын
@@garycraig6506 I've discovered that my most of my favourite pop songs lie between the years 1966 - 1972. Although only eight years old at the time, I began listening to music in 1966. I'm guessing that disco took over the air waves in about 1973. (I do of course love many tunes from the early '60s and some even in the '90s. My favourite music however has been "progressive rock", but that is fading as I age. Nice, soft jazz anyone?)
@hcrun4 жыл бұрын
The basic reason for that is because todays music is essentially created on a computer; samples are mixed, voices added, everything tweaked and the result spat out as an MP3. In our day (I'm 75) that didn't exist. Musicians had to play instruments and singers had to be able to sing. It wasn't until (approximately)1964 that the the first pop record featuring synthesised music (a stylus-operated keyboard of sorts) was issued......and it was pretty ordinary. We Boomers are lucky in that it was our music tastes coupled with 45rpm records played on portable transistorised record players which changed music forever. Today anyone can churn out a load of utter rubbish and call it "music".

Thanks for the info, Ken. I'm nearly 71 and was a freshman in high school when that song was a hit. It brings back memories in the way that only music can do. Like you said, singers could really sing and musicians could really play back then.

Yeah, it's just fun. Mostly I just want to enjoy good music. Don't need some childishly profound ranting.

Saw her when she was 83. What a great show, from a great and beautiful person.

This is not Petula Clark lip-synching. This is a live performance---and it's brilliant.

My beautiful daughter used to sing this along with me when she was about 7 yrs old. Makes my eyes sting whenever I hear it now, such wonderful memories. Tony Hatch wrote the music to it.

One of the best Pop Songs of it's time. Great composition and perfectly covering the optimism of the 60ths.

Excellent performance. No lip-sync, a live vocal on a sound stage with a fine orchestra in front of an appreciative audience. What a concept. Way to go, Petula.

Its lip Sync. she doesnt have a mic
@davidhughes44483 жыл бұрын
@@billpugh58 I beg to differ, Bill. 1) Perhaps you're too young to remember, but these were the days of hyper-cardioid shotgun mics mounted on a traveling, overhead boom operated by a stage hand that followed a performer on stage. Listen carefully for a tad of stage ambiance in her vocal mic. 2) Petula's vocal performance is not a verbatim rendition of the vocal track on the record. Keep an ear out for her ad libs and slight changes in the melody lines. This is not the studio vocal lifted off the master tape. 3) Listen to the live, Dean Martin house band arrangement. This is not a verbatim performance of the instrumental studio recording. 4) These were the days of real, daring musical performances, often executed on live national TV. Yes, there were some lip-synced appearances back then, but this is not one of them.

I agree with live, the vocal ending isn’t the studio version.

The humility of these singers is admirable, she looked as thought she was proud to sing for the audience.. humbled, the way she covered her mouth with that innocent smile. Not something you see today.

I sure miss those days. Although I was just nine years old in January of 1967, that decade was very much a magical time for me. At least in terms of entertainment. That era is gone forever, of course. But I can proudly say I experienced it!

Those variety shows were great back then. The whole family would watch one TV, no internet, no cell phones, Just the family and Dean, Bob, Red, Carol, Ed, etc. Fond memories.
