Terrifying !!! Climbing to the top of the tallest fire-tower in West Virginia.

Nice job Les! My last job had me climbing power plants with 1000 ft stacks. I got used to it after a while, but it always got me nervous in the winter when everything got icy! I know the feeling when the whole thing shakes as you climb. The view is always incredible, especially from the top of the wind turbines that I had to climb on occasion as well.

My Grandpaw was a WV Forest Ranger for Fayette County from 1950 until around 1984 when he was moved to the District Forest Ranger for Fayette & Raleigh county that I know for sure, but there were about 5 or 6 total Counties he was over. He retired in 1991, but when he was the Fayette County Ranger I would go with him to the old Lick Knob Fire Tower in Kingston. When I was a kid I'd run up that Tower full steam, but as I grew older I slowed way down & gripped the hand railing nice & tight. I guess the fear of falling caught up with me. I tried to find some information online about the old Lick Knob Tower, but I found very little & no pictures. But I have all of my Grandpaws pictures of the Tower, I even have a picture of the very first Tower before they built the one that looks like this Tower in the video. I also have all of his awards he received over his career, and he was one of the first to get the Silver Smokey Bear award.

I’m more afraid of hornets than the height since I’m allergic to bees. I felt like you were in the clouds and close the Heaven up there!! Absolutely beautiful!! Your legs are going to ache tonight but it’ll be worth it!!

Going up is easy compared to coming down. Coming down is scary, if you miss a step youre done. Probably forever. Stay safe
