I think we're getting there. I think for far too long we've had governance that was preoccupied with keeping India and Indians in a colonial Era hangup where we just sit and not progress. Slowly we're seeing the upward push and the reclamation of identity but some parts of the country were left behind in the previous administration's that are slowly getting their due. I'm convinced that if it wasn't for the current administration regardless of how we feel about it, most of India wouldn't care about what happens in J&K, in the NE, let alone now know that the NE is multiple states all with different history, people, cultures, etc. It was like that for the south at one point. Everyone just pictures south India as being Tamil Nadu in the north or at least here in Punjab. Now we know Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, etc how they're different etc. We'll get there & I think it helps to hear from people who live in the NE like yourself because now we have a frame of reference that ok you're just like the rest of the youth of India in that you want progress for your state, want jobs, want to provide for your family, etc. When the media does the talking this all gets lost. I hope we hear more and more from the people of NE as time goes on and I know many people who have even traveled there which I hope to do one day myself.

Say what you will about the BJP government but you can't deny they've done more for North East In 7 years than congress did In 70 years. North eastern states were neglected by Congress and the massacre that took place in Nagaland was ordered by Nehru. Give them some time and trust and you'll see they're different when it comes to treating North East India like the rest of the India.

The insurgencies were indirectly funded by the missionaries who's main objective is to create and exploit the fault lines. Terrorism isn't the only problem in the north east. Recently in Manipur my friend's uncle was shot to death by the mafias operating from Myanmar. His uncle was running garments wholesale factory and was asked for extortion from that Burmese mafia, he refused to give money and that mafia killed him. Nothing could have been done, his whole family was completely helpless and left to mourn over his uncle's dead body. At last the local mafia of that area warned Burmese mafia not to intervene in that area again.

@Abhilash Laskar first of all get out of your misconception that North Eastern states provides more resources than the rest of India. In fact northeast gets more benefit due to the GDP earned from the rest of India. Also Northeast students migrate to universities in different parts of India and for jobs which your governments are unwilling or unable to provide you. Plus how can you demand for both equal treatment and special status at the same time? A person from Northeast has equal right to buy property and settle in any other part of India. However the same doesn't hold true for other Indians when it comes to buying property or settling in some North East states. This is a largely skewed favouriteism in fever of people from North East. If you want to complain then ask why NE States should get special status compared to other Indian states? Stop asking and demanding what the country can do for you. Ask what you can do for the country.

Sad truth is many people in Northeast especially like in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya the people are more afraid of Indian Army than insurgent rebels. Some people even see the insurgents as vigilantes and the Army as an oppressive force. A major reason is the atrocities and crimes the Indian Army committed in the 50s, 60s, 80s towards the tribals. These things are not spoken mostly kept secret to the world outside the Northeast Region

I am from Assam. And from my own personal experience, Insurgency in North-East India has reduced quite a lot since BJP government came to power. Maybe most of the people feel same. We haven't seen any major terrorist activities in past few years.

I visited NE many times, here are my two cents. NE people are really good Indians. But they have internal conflicts with neighboring states ( within 7 states) also they are not promoting development like railways routes or Airports in their own state. For example, Meghalaya railway routes were halted by local people and local politicians. But Nitin Gadkari and Modi have done an excellent job in highway and road development in the NE states.

For those reading ‘reverse racism’ and whataboutery is never the easy answer to things. The Northeast or any borderland is vulnerable and geographically marginalised. Indigenous people are culturally marginalised without any representation. They are literally endangered and their problems are very different than problems faced by non indigenous people from culturally dominant areas living in the NE, though both problems are valid. One’s problem does not cancel out the other’s problems - it is not a competition.

I’m the only North Eastern student in my college & I didn’t go to the college for 3 semester because of social anxiety, alienation, judgements. & lack of psychological safety. & also I do self study at home. Some professors are absolutely kind who treats us like a normal human. Certain professors would always use Chinese reference all the time & the students would stare at me. The administration is kind. I had to learn how to live alone & survive in the west first in my lonely apartment. 0 friends in the city. I think it’s also because I’m introverted. Honestly, I feel blessed to be born in India. The people are kind everywhere, elders call us beta. I just feel like I don’t belong sometimes….

Sadly I've lost a lot of friends and relatives due to narcotics. Right now I've just arrived home from attending a cousin's death due to a fatal drug overdose. He is so right about that particular issue, "name anything" , and yes it was opium in this case, "No 4" heroin to be specific. I live in a town in north Tripura bordering Mizoram. The drug issue in particular started after the arrival of "paite" people from Myanmar in our area. A week ago 97 packets of "no 4" heroin was found in the hands of a local dealer. Each packet weighed 18 grams. That's the amount sent to a town of about just a 1000 to 2000 residents. Entire generations of youth are facing this problem. Families losing loved ones, wives are getting widowed, sons are losing their fathers (breadwinner of the family). Entire villages became an open air drug market in our area as a result of the arrival of Burmese traders. It is tragic, to put it bluntly.
