Terry was my favorite author when I was a kid. I wrote him a letter in 6th grade and a year later I got a handwritten letter back from him, apologizing because my letter had gotten mixed up with other papers and he had only just read it. 30 years later I still have that letter and it brings back such good memories.

I was so happy to see this. When I was in seventh grade, I wanted to seem like I was really smart so I went through my local library looking for the longest novel I could find to bring to school to read. At 794 pages with an awesome cover by the Hilderbrand brothers I found sword of Shannara. This not only sparked my lifelong love for reading but for fantasy as well. Four years later when I became an Eagle Scout one of my best friends sent a letter to Terry Brooks telling him what Fan I was. He sent back a handwritten letter, congratulating me on the achievement. 27 years later, I still have this letter hanging in my office.

I moved to a new province for my grade 11 year. I was surprised by the summer book review. What summer book? No one told me thousands of miles away that I should read a book over the summer and be ready to do an oral book review of it to the English teacher. So. I winged it. And reviewed The Sword of Shannara. While I enjoyed the book, I felt, as a 16 y o, it was a pale imitation of The Lord of the Rings. My teacher instantly loved this inference. He grabbed the attention of the entire class (most were reading, as they'd been instructed). I was embarrassed. That few minutes endeared me to him. I had compared a book to a great work of literature. From that point forward everything I did was seen through rose coloured glasses. I suspect that teens really love Brooks's works. As it's about coming of age and believing in yourself. That's enough of a wave to ride to wealth. Made his publishers a bucket load of money.
