Thank you for this interesting story of heavyweight boxer Terry Daniels. I do remember him. He was a fine professional boxer and a credit to the sport.

I was 13 years old and watched Terry fight Joe Frazier on national tv. Terry was not going to beat Joe but he gave Joe a tough 4 rounds. I wish Terry had quit after the fight and pursued other venues. No more boxing. He had nothing to be ashamed of. How many guys can say they fought 2 world champions in Floyd Patterson and Joe Frazier? Rest in peace Terry Daniels.

Terry had opportunities outside of boxing that he eventually pursued, but the damage caught up to him later. Things might have been different had he retired earlier.

Daniels was a well conditioned, game, durable fighter. Not champion level but no tomato can either. He should have retired after the Frazier fight where it was obvious how out of his league he was. I believe he was kayoed by Ron Stander in one round. There are very few people I would recommend stay in boxing very long.

It seems like losing ten fights means you get are getting pounded. Time to leave.

Started 28-4, finished 35-30, so, yeah, you're right.

Another great story told by a master storyteller. I find it a sad account of someone who would never give up. However, continuing with boxing was akin to sacrificing his brain and well-being to scientific research or boxing history?? It’s mysterious to me that he would try to reverse an irreversible trend of bodily damage. He had other talents he could have employed, starting in the early 1970s.

Thanks, Bruce. Fighting is one of the few occupations that has an unavoidable expiration date. Many in the game decide nonetheless to continue on. Some accounts exist telling of Roman gladiators doing the same.

Nobody was beating Smokin Joe in 71. Terry had no way of knowing that. Hey he gave it a shot.
