When he passed through my home town on the first leg of his final journey, he put out the call for help, looking for a place to stay. I thought about it but rejected the idea, for selfish reasons. And as I watched his health deteriorate as he roamed up and down the west coast, I regretted that I had not extended a helping hand. Now I am agonized by the thought that I could have helped him.
