Directed and co-written by Terry Gilliam, "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" follows (Adam Driver), a cynical advertising director, who finds himself trapped in the outrageous delusions of an old Spanish shoe-maker (Jonathan Pryce) who believes himself to be Don Quixote. In the course of their comic and increasingly surreal adventures, Toby is forced to confront the tragic repercussions of a film he made in his idealistic youth -- a film that changed the hopes and dreams of a small Spanish village forever.

Thanks for this. This was a great interview. I only saw the film recently. Great first 1/3, ok middle 1/3 and then fell apart in the last 1/3, but Pryce was always fantastic.

Thanks for posting! Great to get a 43 minute slice of Terry in a non-SHOWBIZ type interview where he could stretch out and just be himself without the usual "time constraints"~~~~~

I finally got to see the movie on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Bangkok, after wrapping a shoot in Georgia which seemed wholly appropriate during the opening scenes! It was wonderful. I just wanted to point out though that Gilliam mentions having music during the Grand Central Station waltz; I was an extra in that massive scene, and we simply had a tempo count while shooting. I think though he may have had music playing for a moment right before where a woman singing cues the vision of the waltz taking place. This was changed in the editing so that it was seeing Lydia that triggers the vision of everyone waltzing. I seem to recall hearing some music play while we filmed them reacting to the woman singing. I also did observe how he stands near the cameras and actors; he had monitors off to the side which he watched while rolling camera, but was then immediately on-hand to speak and collaborate with the actors, as opposed to the video village method. I found it very interesting to watch him work for those two (long) nights.

Oh wow. First of all...vacation goals. Second of all thanks for clearing this up! It’s rare to get this kind of insider information on the set machinations of a living genius.

@@audreymerriman4408 My pleasure. I feel very fortunate to have been there. And I can definitely recommend Georgia as a vacation spot. Tbilisi is a beautiful city, the food is wonderful, and the Caucasus Mountains are stunning. I was just saying to the one of the assistant directors last week that I wish I could have had a chance to get to The Black Sea while we were there.

It hurt watching the interviewer ask Gilliam over and over if the film was a metaphor for film-making or alluding to how crazy it is to make a film and on and on and on... ugh... dude. There are so many better things to talk about.

As much as I like Jonathan Price as a actor, I think it was wrong to cast him in this. He played it well enough to an extent, but I think he and Terry were recalling days of Brazil during the shoot. Nice to see them 'reunited' some 30 years later, but at the same time how old and outside of his element Price seemed to me. Had Terry gone with any other actor, I think the movie may have done better? For being so obsessed for so long with the story, it seemed like Terry just slapped it together finally to get it done with. Or maybe I and others were expecting more than could be delivered?

He was possessed by the book = he's nuts. If anything we should all read more because the crap we see/read everyday is more likely than not doing us harm than a great book and even a bad one... "Tangents" is an odd word to use for a film maker expressing themselves in a film creatively that isn't guided by producers and finances.
