This verse is missing from this version. Goodbye, papa, please pray for me I was the black sheep of the family You tried to teach me right from wrong Too much wine and too much song Wonder how I got along Goodbye, papa, it's hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky Now that the spring is in the air Little children everywhere When you see them, I'll be there

This was an old Kingston Trio song in which Terry Jacks rewrote the lyrics inspired by a close friend of his who had died a few months earlier from acute leukemia.
@DonRice
@DonRice 2 жыл бұрын
"The song was based on Rod McKuen's 1965 re-write of "Le moribond", originally by Belgian singer Jacques Brel from 1962. For his version, Jacks made some modifications to the lyrics, which, combined with McKuen's, resulted in a work that bears little resemblance to Brel's original in tone, substance or poetry. In Germany,[3] the UK [4] and the United States,[5] Jacks' rewrite was released on Bell Records, and the song went to #1 on the charts. In Canada, it was released on Jacks' own label, Goldfish Records, and distributed by London Records Canada." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Jacks

@@DonRice And both Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's versions were haunting and beautiful. Not something that can be said for Terry Jacks. KFOG in San Francisco (back when it was the top rated rock station there) used to have a "10 at 10" - ten songs with a theme, usually, but not always a year. One annual event was the 10 worst hits ever. After winning several years in a row, this version of Seasons in the Sun was retired as a worst ever champ.

@@mark-be9mq My best friend in 2nd grade died of leukemia. I still remember sitting on the swings at recess and him crying saying he was going to die. I felt so bad and tried to tell him it would be alright and maybe the doctors would find something to help him (in a child's mind we try to find the best outcome). I remember this song coming on the radio in the 70s. I basically took the lyrics literally. It was someone who was going to die and was saying farewell to loved ones. And of course, reflecting on past events as well. As far as I know, it was a one hit wonder. Peace!

The song is an adaptation of a Belgian song which Terry Jacks translated and adapted. The inspiration for the rewritten lyrics was a close friend of his who was suffering from acute leukemia and died four months later. The Terry Jacks rendition, which was later dedicated to the friend, has the dying man giving his last words to his loved ones whom he shared his life with, much like the original version.

In the French version he tells his wife he knows she cheated on him, and he tells his best friend he knows it was with HIM. He's pretty chill about it, tho.

Yep. The original has a completely different type of message, but most of Jacques Brel's songs were like that. Bitter and sour were normal aftertaste "hidden" (not so much) in all his songs. Although some of the intention of his songs were completely misunderstood as the complete opposite. An example would be "Ne me quitte pas" which is seen by many as a great love song, all the while the author just whished to show the misery of men who some call now a "simp" or other similar labels. Curiously an adaptation of this song (named "If You Go Away" in English and also with a very different attitude) was also sung with some success by Terry Jacks.

Ironic you mentioned Cedar, a symbol of immortality. I remember this from Jr High/Middle School. A very sad song.

I don't mind the maudlin lyrics, but those instrumentals sound like something my kids' played on their toy piano.

The inspiration for Jacks version came from one of his friends who was sadly suffering from acute leukaemia and passed away four months later. In Jacks’ version, the songs tell the story of a dying man telling his last words to his loved ones. In Jacks’ version, the man addresses his childhood friend, his father and potentially a daughter or niece.

My ex wife and her dad this was their favorite song. Her name was Michelle and unfortunately her dad died at a young age. She had a 45 of this song but it got broken. I tried to find her a new 45 but couldn't so I bought her a CD with this song on it. I always liked this song but it became very special to me knowing what it meant to her. So thanks for reacting to this song.
