I never understood why Wayne and Viola cheated so openly in the fist place. They both already had devoted and loving spouses. Margaret was too smart for them though. Wayne just went back to her because Viola left town.

I haven’t figured it out, either. Yet at the final dance before they left town, they’re dancing with their spouses, yet it’s made to look like Viola and her husband already left town and they weren’t there. Like a dream with the church in the final scene.
