Hi Terry, another great example of how you explain your detailed approaches in a very plausible and reproducible way. Excellent and valuable guidelines indeed. Thanks and looking forward to your next project. Cheers Dirk

Actually my customer usually takes the wire off and it is great learning for him, although in reverse you can still learn a lot about how to wire simply by removing it.

Wow, this video is absolutely fantastic. I have it saved for re-watching a few more times. As an intermediate hobbyist I have trouble finding information I can use (without "finished" trees) but that isn't completely basic. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this

Glad you enjoyed it! I realize there is a need for this information and I will continue to do my best to address this shortfall. Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi Terry, I haven't watched the whole video so I may be speaking unnecessarily. I'm not just a bonsai gardener but horticulturist. I belong to a club that has a handful of people who are more advanced such that they don't need lessons on repotting and and the like. But as a college educated horticulturist I find myself trying to teach the importance of knowing the trees we are working on so we can anticipate how the trees might respond to our best efforts at cultivating them for bonsai. I'm not sure if you will cover it in your video or even if you find it helpful but your Hackberry is a member of the elm family. It branches in a dictaly alternate fashion that being alternating along a single plane along the branches. They are robust trees like most other elm family members. And the leaves are offset at the base where the leaf meets the petiole. All Elm family members grow in this way and most are over story trees meaning when their needs are met the grow with abundant vigor. I haven't seen you pruning yet but the Japanese do not prune to a single leaf on alternating leaf arrangement trees as the first leaf to sprout at the base of a new stem will not produce a bud. That fist leaf is called the susaba and that basically means it will not sprout in Japanese. I'm going to tune back in now. Cheers

Thank you DK for your comment and sharing of information. Yes the Celtis is a vigorous grower providing you feed aggressively and water a lot. I am aware of all of that, but it is not covered in this video. I have never suggested pruning should be done to 1 leaf in any of my videos, its always to at least 2 or even 4. Hope you enjoyed watching the video though.

@@TerryErasmusbonsai I do! Your bonsai videos are inspirational. The material you work with are usually mature and your techniques are a joy to glean through. My apologies for being a bit rough around the edges. I find I gravitate towards plants a bit easier than dealing with people. Lol.

Great video, all the process of styling is very well explained. Since i started to watch your videos, you really encouraged me to get a celtis tree. I can't find the species in my country but finally i got some celtis sinensis seeds, can you share some advises, specially with stratification, there's not too much info on the topic and you are the only one who really give away professional advises.
@TerryErasmusbonsai2 жыл бұрын
Thats great Sabik! Usually the fruit is eaten by birds. Their digestive system acts as a stratification process for the seeds and then when the bird extretes them they usually germinate very easily where they fall. I would suggest you place your seeds in warm (no hotter than 35 deg C) water overnight and then sow in a good seedling mix and keep in a warm position (out of the sun) and always moist but not wet. All my celtis which I am field growing I grew from seed. It has taken 15 year so far and they are still in the field. So you will need to be patient if you want large trees.

celtis sinensis bonsai on KZbin are mostly your videos. Not bad but as you told us to look for The Taiwan style i was amused to See your videos every where i look for celtis sinensis bonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure how to respond to your comment but thanks for watching. There are few videos on KZbin relating to Taiwanese celtis, but there are some which are of the Hwa Fong. Bonsai Empire has one, aside from mine. You will find more on Google though, not on KZbin. This is partially why I am trying to generate more content on KZbin about the species. I find it very odd that it is such a popular species but almost nothing is published about them. Here is a Taiwanese website which has some great galleries and even books you can order: www.sidiao.com/index_e.htm

@TerryErasmusbonsai2 жыл бұрын
It is never good to reveal all one's secrets in one go :) I will never show my entire collection in one video but over time if you watch all my videos you will see all of my trees. However I will say that I don't have a huge collection, I cannot afford to time wise as I don't have an assistant and am always working on customer's trees leaving little time to work on my own.

@@TerryErasmusbonsai I meant in terms of pruning, repotting, etc. I have elms and I'm comfortable with them, but recently planted a dozen Celtis sinensis seeds and want to make sure I use appropriate techniques for the species. Thanks for your time and response :)
