For English - the same as every language , it can be colloquial, accent can vary, pronunciation can differ. Even English people won't expect proper pronunciation like these ladies do. Language is a skill , it doesn't need a school . Ancient Tamils ruled the trade only with Tamil in the ancient days. The misconception should be cleared . They need to learn to see wider.

Students must be taught to appreciate a literary piece, the nuances of a language and the odds it has surpassed to stand where it is today. One should look at how foreign language schools teach their languages in India and how the level exam (Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha) syllabus of Hindi or for that matter, Tamil subject content in Indian schools look like. It's the system that is to be blamed and not the society. According to me Indian languages are thriving well, because they embrace other languages with it and any non-native speaker can pick up any Indian language very well with foundation level knowledge of the language and adding English inbetween. I don't see a flaw there. Languages are for communicating and our languages serve the purpose very well.

English is just a language. One shouldnt judge a person’s intelligence or personality based on his/her English language competency or proficiency. I have noticed this is not the case when someone is not proficient in Tamil language. Why do we give so much importance to English language? It’s just another language. One can easily learn English language just like any other language. Also there is nothing wrong in speaking a language with a slang. Do we look down on Westerners or other foreigners who speak English language with a specific accent? For instance French people speak English language with a French accent. The same goes for Germans, Latin Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Italians, etc. So there is nothing wrong for a Tamilian to speak English with a Tamil accent

The lady who said jalapeno and pizza also pronounced it wrong, it should be pronounced as yalapeno and peetza. You shouldn't go on TV and pronounce it wrongly, especially when you are accusing them of bad English. As long as you are communicating and being understood, language has served its purpose. I love my mother tongue Tamizh, named my daughter Yazhini, but I'm more comfortable in English, bcoz I studied in Anglo Indian school, but expecting other people to be fluent in English is not acceptable except of course you are their English Teacher. இடம் பொருள் ஏவல் தெரியணும், who you should speak to, in what language to get your work done is important!
