It’s important to actually contact your local grocery stores about their packaging. It’s one thing to hate the practice, but unless their customers are making their opinions known to the company directly, it’s never going to change.

Absolutely agree with you on the plastic packaging. German supermarkets have started to package (some) organic produce in cardboard trays, some fruit/veg is marked with stickers instead of plastic wrap. We don't have nearly as many vegan options in stores, which is sad, but we have many organic supermarkets where you can buy almost everything plastic free. :)
@kristina_rr

Depends on where you shop in Germany. The Globus near me has a lot of plastic free organic produce and their vegan section is huge. As you say it‘s sad that vegan and package free organic food isn‘t as common here as in other countries but I still see a huge change here compared to 5 years ago.

Same here in France, organic vegetables and fruits in supermarkets are usually wrapped in plastic while their "conventionnally grown" counterparts aren't. It's supposedly so that they can't be mistaken for non-organic ones at checkout as they are more expensive.

I once went spent half a year traveling around Ireland and the UK after finishing school and back then was really on a rather tight budget while also just starting out with veganism. During that time I binge watched your series of low budget shopping in different supermarkets and I cannot tell you how much that saved my life (and my wallet) being away from home in foreign countries for a longer period. I agree, stores need to stop putting produce in plastic. It’s not necessary. Whether organic or conventional. There are also a lot of people who think they are required to use the produce bags that the stores provide. Or they put something that is already in a plastic wrapping or container into a produce bag. It bothers me so much to see people doing that.

If you’re in the US and looking for meat alternative type things, Aldi in the US has a line called Earth Grown which has really tasty mostly vegan meat alternatives. Their frozen vegan meatballs are my favorite. And their vegan sausage patties are really good too. They’re also a little more affordable than the big brand names, and most of the burgers come in boxes without plastic bags on the inside so the packaging is completely recyclable.

The key is reduction at the source.

Madeleine, did you know that all our Cornish recycling is processed completely. We have no landfill here in Cornwall now. Everything is processed even our Black bag collection is used to power a powerstation?? Also try Thornes for beautiful farm shop supplies...Long Rock ... you may have tried these places already, but as we are " neighbours" here ... enjoy!

tofu is my favorite thing but when I lived in the UK it was so expensive in Tesco and Sainsbury's to what I was used to so I used beans as my source of protein. 😅

Hi Maddie! I agree about the plastic and about letting the supermarkets to know we don't agree with plastic packaging. I've talked to the people at the supermarket where there's both normal and organic fresh produce and they've explained to me they package them because sometimes people mix it or are not certain if they are actually getting organic instead or regular. As some people commented, paper/cardboard is a great option, I've also seen some kind of paper mesh. Let's hope if all people who don't like plastic let the supermarket know, they will reduce it and find better alternatives.

Cardboard is indeed a good option! Here in Poland Lidl labels their organic vegetables and fruits with non-invasive laser. It's like a tatoo but completly environment friendly :D

Maddie you should try the Forestiere mushrooms from Tesco! They were actually developed in the UK (the first new variety in 30 years). They have a nice umami nutty flavour. 🍄
