The tricky bit about humans as design is.... we aren't actually specialized in any particular task. We're good at adapting at a lot of things, but specialization isnt guaranteed. And they would not be so short-sighted (and/or cheap) to get rid of all sensors except cameras. Pretty much every other self-driving vehicle out there uses cameras in addition to other sensors like LiDAR, SONAR, etc. But for some reason Elon thinks cameras alone can do the job.
@Unknown-mf4of2 күн бұрын
@@robtapp6400 He actually does not think that. RADAR (which is absolutely needed when vision fails in fog, heavy snow and rain, etc.) and ultrasonic sensors existed on the previous Tesla versions (for 2016 and a few years later) but Melon Muskrat had to remove them because he foolishly shut down and fired everyone working on a lower priced Tesla. Then lowered the price on the existing models without those to maintain market share. This backfired on him and his profit margins went from well above the auto industry average to well below. So the removal was done only to try to increase his profits, at the expense of end user safety. He has since admitted that all the existing Teslas will never be FSD: "Despite years of assurances that buyers were investing in hardware ready for autonomous driving, the Tesla CEO now suggests that many of these cars may never drive themselves without human supervision."

Every time we get down in the weeds about how self-driving cars work, I remember the Nova documentary special: The Great Robot Race. It follows different development teams and their work on half a dozen different self-driving systems and vehicles. The most notable I can remember we're an overly skittish dump truck that wouldn't drive between cones, and a bike that was immediately disqualified because it's handlers forgot to turn on the balancing system before sending it off. And if I'm looking at the correct IMDb page, that shit came out in 2006, we've been had self-driving technology, it just hasn't been perfected, or expanded, or made idiot-proof, and it definitely hasn't been made business viable, that's probably the biggest one that every company got hung up on

I don’t think we are anywhere near full self-driving, at least not for at least a number of years.

Honestly, they should just sell them as human controllable robot, like a second body. Think about needing to go like into a biohazardous area and instead of needing to risk the life of a person, you could send in a machine controlled by someone a safe distance away to handle it (i know specialized machines exist to do such things, i’m just coming up with a possible use case)

You just knocked this Boomer off his back foot. It's nice to see a younger generation call it like he sees it. Believe it or not, we're on the same page!
