Today we're taking a look at the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (2019) versus the 2018 Volkswagen Golf R in a 1/4 mile closed road race.
We also see how much faster the acceleration is compared to your average ICE cars which includes a Toyota Tacoma V6, Toyota RAV4, and a Hyundai Elantra Sport.

Have you tired Model 3 vs Golf R without lunch control? In real world usage you don’t use that... Model 3 doesn’t have one, so it would be a better comparison

Antoine Doyon Yes. In both cases the Golf R wins. It’s a fast little car. But this is the slowest Tesla on the market and cheaper to own then a Golf R if you consider the price of Gas and maintenance. 👍

That Golf R barely beat the slowest Tesla. I actually thought it would do a little better. Forget the Performance Model 3, race against the LR AWD without the boost upgrade. The Golf R would get crushed. With the boost upgrade, it wouldn't even be a race. The LR AWD at that point dips into the 11s in the quarter about 3.7-3.8 0-60.

Golf R dips into the 10s with a few mods and a larger turbo. Would rather have the Golf R. Those cars are no joke. It will kill a P100D also.

My golf r stg 3 runs 10.44 1/4 mile.......quicker than a P100D. Also the slowest gas car will beat a P100D from LA to San Fran.......no stops allowed!!

What was the state of charge for the race vs. the R? Are you still on the really bad Primacy tires? Should have been closer if the battery was at >80% SOC

@@TeslaCanadianDad 78% isn't going to get you full power and those tires will kick on the TC system under heavy acceleration. With better tires and a charge around 90% it would have been really close. Cool to see two cars I've owned side by side though!

In my experience with my Tesla it does make a significant difference under 90% of battery then when it's over 90%

Awesome video. tesla's are awesome cars. there isnt enough infrastructure for my liking for me to purchase one yet. also gas car is perfect for my lifestyle at the moment. i have a 2018 golf R. few videos on my channel. alot of you guys are stating that the awd tesla could wreak a golf r. most likely. dont forget, we can tune our cars. mine is stage 2 APR high torque file with a down pipe and intake (only 2 requirements). the car now pushes 388hp and 407 ftlbs of torque (crank) it is a huge jump in performance. claims have been made that 0-60 are achievable in 3.2 to 3.6 seconds! i can confirm 4.2 (car full of stuff and passengers). great fun. id love to go for a drive in a tesla someday! power delivery must be fantastic and torquey!!

Good video guys, ironically I am debating on a 18 Golf R w 7500km at a dealer or a new Tesla SR, employer mileage allowance would pay the Tesla off basically but only a fraction of the Golf R when I incur the fuel cost and maintenance costs. Tough decision, I love the Golf R after having owned a Stage 2 + 15 WRX for 90Km then traded it on a mint 12 S4 Prestige which is EPL Stage 1, I have decided to move it after putting on 35km in about 19 mths , it now having 100km , but damn it is a nice car, comfy and classy but chews the gas a little more. So the Tesla is about 10k more plus tax after the 8k rebates available in BC. My gut tells me Tesla is the way to go but so many more options will be available in 4 years when i would be selling the Golf R. However where will gas prices go? Already high enough in GVRD thats for sure, I have a hard decision....

In comparison to a euro car of the same cost would you say it is luxury or would you say it is average quality and more interesting due to its unique nature. I love tech as well and that is one part I am leaning to heavily.. The one bummer is that locally for me the Tesla is an 8 week wait and the Golf R makes it so easy to do. Sure I could wait to go electric later but then I miss using it now. I truly want the long range but just cant swing the cost at this time, the extra range and AWD sure would be nice. I have a tough choice to make. I am leaning to it considering we will have a regular vehicle in the household

The Cisco Kidd I would personally consider it a luxury car for sure compared to all the other cars I’ve ever owned. Autopilot btw comes with every Tesla now. Full Self Driving package as of today doesn’t add much and I would recommend to wait. Tech wise the car is miles ahead of any other cars in my opinion. Thanks for all your comments. @@TeslaCanadianDad I agree with you that the Tesla is miles ahead on the tech and I love it, my friend has a SR and has logged 40km on it already, one of the first batches locally here. I see its advantages for sure have a tough decision. I do like the interior minimalist style as well.I have looked at some other good alternative evs w similar range for less cost but for now Tesla is still the number one choice. Appreciate your feedback. Have you found fit and fiish to be top notch and I realize the rear seats are horrible overall for comfort but are the fronts good and supportive for a long drive w recharge, like a 750km drive?

The Cisco Kidd I have yet to do a long trip with my car. Longest was 400km and I loved the lombard support for my lower back as I’ve had major surgeries and have a brutal back and back pain. I constantly have the heated seat one not because I’m cold but because it helps reduce back pain. So I personally live the front seat option. Only thing I would change is make them I tiny bit wider.

But I'll wait for the next 'stock' 10 second one to show up and we'll see what it can do. Even though by then, cars might be flying. In the mean time, I'll beat up on the stock slow ones.

Great video, however, as a ex-MK7 R owner and now a 21' SR+ owner, a stock R will never beat SR+ at drag race unless it's got some kind of ECU mods. I had JB4 on mine running Map 6 with high boost and yeah it's faster, and it runs 1/4 in mid 12 secs, but SR+ FEELS faster to 100Kph. Anyhow, both are nice cars and I'm hoping whoever bought my R will take care of it as much as I have.

Same here, although I had a wee bit different platform. I'm coming from a Mazdaspeed 3 fully bolted with catless downpipe, and I can rest assure my Tesla SR+ feels 100x faster even though my Mazdaspeed had more horsepower and torque. It's crazy considering how much less hp the Tesla has. Forever sold on these just for that torque alone

@@TeslaCanadianDad The stock MK7 GOLF R should be pretty much an exact 0-100 kph match to the TM3 SR+ RWD with the new software. The Model 3 is super quick. I've been in a SR+ RWD and LR AWD Performance. Amazing.

You are correct the video you see is with launch control. We also did it without and it still beat me. It’s a fast little car. My charge was in the 70% percent. Just a though... When you want to really use a gas car power, you'd want to do it while observing the temps, never doing with a cold or too hot engine etc. and even so as the car ages you'd be abusing the engine, little by little and diminishing it's life... But with Tesla or any EVs you'd be not abusing the car core even if you pushed it regularly I think about it, because where I live it's pretty expensive to maintain and repair a car, but as a motorcycle lover, I love to push the engine sometimes What do you think?

Bro I have the same one and I raced the infinity 30t which is 4.4s and porsche cayman gt4 that is 4.2s, and I was going to beat both these cars, and the standard pluse is only 4.9s so what are you saying. Tesla can beat any car from 0 to 60 miles and the acceleration stop after 60 I dont know why but probably as safety measure.

@@rtsstream Sorry bud. I love Tesla and I love my 2016 GOLF R, but factoring gas and any incentives is not a fair comparison. Eventually, EVs will be taxed alot more to get road tax and the difference in 'fuel' cost will be less favorable than it is now. I DO want a Model 3 Performance, but I don't have a budget for a vehicle of 75k+TAX+ETC. The sticker price on my 16 R was just under 42K + tax and various other charges.

Nope. I ran a 13.5@104 in my Model 3 SR+ BEFORE the recent power update. I expect low 13s now which puts it neck and neck with a stock DSG equipped R. Ive owned both cars and the R was sold a month after I got the 3. I do way more canyon driving in the 3 than I ever did in the R. 0-60 in the SR+ is now 4.9 seconds. Free power boosts.

@@MarksTech After two power updates it is, although most people are getting 5.0 seconds flat or so. Check Reddit or the Tesla owners forum. I ran a 13.5 in the 1/4 mile in mine pre-power bump which should now put it at 13.3 or so now.
