About the yoke steering wheel, I spent three hours one day practicing tight turns in a deserted parking lot and an hour another day practicing on a pair of close left u turnarounds. By the end of those practice sessions, tight turns came as naturally with the yoke as they did with a standard steering wheel. As a grey haired, female, social security recipient who didn't learn how to drive until I was 22, I am pretty sure that if I can get comfortable with the yoke, anyone can.

@@jon4lakers Here's the text on my Tesla account from 1/10/2021 to today: "We will reach out to you to schedule your delivery date. Delivery time frame is based on order date, profile submission, delivery location and vehicle configuration." So there's that. We ended up selling the extra Tesla (a Model 3) in March under the assumption that the new S would be available in a few weeks. Fortunately we still have the old S to tide us over. We went with the blue (our other Teslas were both black, time for a change) with the black fake leather interior. My wife strongly dislikes the white interior, I think she feels it will show age and dirt easily. We like the black door handles, the chrome ones we had a few "don't touch a burning stove" moments the first year. You mentioned in the video the black handles were cooler when in direct sunlight, are they so much cooler you don't notice any heat? Thanks again for the video, it was calm and rational so a nice break from almost every other KZbin video.

@@henrylee8510 I think the February 2022 delivery schedule for the Model S long range is for new orders. According to KZbin, which is never wrong or misleading, at least some people are taking delivery of the Model S long range (hereinafter referred to as "SLR"). Here's a guy from a couple hours away from me who seems like a normal person kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3Ome2aafK6fgrM (drove SLR from Houston to Seattle last week). Model S Long Range has been running around 10.8 @ 129 mph in the 1/4 mile. For comparison, a Model S Performance Raven will run 10.4 @ 127 in Ludicrous+ with full launch mode, and about 10.7@124 in regular Ludicrous mode without battery pre-heating. So the new Model S Long Range is being neutered on the launch but from a rolling start, is actually faster than a Performance Raven or P100DL. Amazing compromise given you still get all the other benefits of the Plaid. Once again, Tesla creates a compelling product and moves the goalposts!
@bayes1124
@bayes1124 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is worth noting that the new Model S Long Range accelerates 60-130 mph in 7.25 seconds (or 100-200 km/h in 6.5 seconds). This is faster than the Porsche Taycan Turbo S by 0.5 seconds. I think the LR acceleration is limited to make the Plaid look better. In fact, the new LR is the old Performance, but with much better technical equipment (faster charging, repeatable performance), faster 60-130, but slower 0-60. Acceleration of 60-130 is much more important for your safety and driving experience.

This car IS faster than a Model 3 Performance, even on the 0-60, because Model 3 does 3.1 with 1ft rollout, this does 3.1 without 1ft rollout (about 2.9 with 1ft rollout) and it only gets better from here! The 60-130mph on this new Model S Long Range is about 7.4 seconds, which is significantly faster than both a Raven Model S Performance (9 seconds) and a Porsche Taycan Turbo S (7.8 seconds) You heard that right, the BASE Model S is as fast as a Taycan Turbo to 60 and faster than a Turbo S to 130..
@bayes1124
@bayes1124 3 жыл бұрын
What about the gearbox? And at the same time, it has reproducible performance and the ability to charge faster. It is very likely that the new LR will have even better cooling, because the Taycan is similar to the Model 3: "VERY DISAPPOINTED - car was way way way down on power in morning session after hot lap #6!!!! About the same number of laps I get with my Model 3 at Laguna before power reduction Battery temperature leaving hte garage before session #1 was 72F returning to garage battery temp was 132F - car was way way down on power ambient air temp this morning at laguna was 50F or less (46F for 1st session) 6 hot laps = 12-15 minutes of hard driving at laguna - so it's more than nurumbergring lap (8 minutes or less) - but so much for Porsche's vaunted 800V and improved battery cooling system - the car can _NOT_ run flat out for a full 25 minute track day session - I had to come in at 18 minutes or there about because I was sooo down on power I was a hazard on track - 2nd session went better, but only did 4-5 laps because I hit 17% battery after 4 laps (no fast charging at Laguna)" www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/2020-taycan-turbo-vs-laguna-seca-w-hooked-on-driving-lap-data-impressions-added.2923/ Or worse: "By the end of the race, Team Taisan’s Tesla Model 3 with Unplugged Performance parts stood in first place, followed by the other four Model 3s in the event. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S, due to its throttling issue, came in at 6th place. Possibly due to these results, the Gulf Racing team adopted a new strategy for the Grand Prix’s third round, which was held last month at the Tsukuba Circuit. The 2021 All-Japan EV Grand Prix Series’ third round was another 55 km race, and it involved 12 laps around the famous racetrack. This time around, Gulf Racing took its time with the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, pacing itself instead of accelerating like a bat out of hell from the start of the race. This proved quite useful, as the vehicle lasted longer than in the previous two rounds. However, the seemingly inevitable power loss issue emerged once more at the 10th lap. Because of this, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S never managed to catch Team Taisan’s Model 3 with Unplugged Performance parts, which ended the race in first place once more. This marked the 100th career victory for Yasutsune “Ricky” Chiba, the founder of Team Taisan, as well as Unplugged Performance, whose Tesla tuning capabilities are becoming more and more recognized. Following the Unplugged Model 3 were six other Teslas, one of them being from Gulf Racing." www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-crushes-porsche-taycan-turbo-s-3x-track-video/

@@bayes1124 what about the gearbox? I really have no idea, looks like Tesla's motors and battery packs can push harder at high speed than the greatly marketed Taycan's dual gear system.. and the Long Range S doesen't even have carbon sleeved rotors... The Taycan always had some heat problems, but people always overlooked because old Model S was even worse, many never noticed the throttling problems on the Taycan because it has great power and it's hard to notice at first. Model S Plaid is at the nurburgring right now, i hope for a sub 7:15 hot lap

On cars with an airbag in the steering wheel, the "push and pull" steering method should be used for safety. This method prevents your arms from crossing in front of the airbag, which can cause severe injuries to your arms or hands. Of course, the yoke makes this extremely awkward or impossible.

@6:47 It's important to note that what you're doing here doesn't appear to be a three-point turn (K-turn). I say that because when doing a three-point turn, you should end up going the opposite direction as the entire point is that it serves as a method to turn around on a road when there's no other option. I think the point of those videos is that the yoke is harder to deal with when you're doing quick hand maneuvers because you really can't grab anywhere. That's something that I noticed pretty quickly during things like quick, consecutive turns when using the yoke.

A 2014 freightliner I used to drive had the air horn on the wheel in about the same spot, hard to use it as it was a moving target you had to look down at the wheel to find it. They returned it to the spot where you would traditionally find the air horn. I think that may happen here especially the horn and signals people will get tired of chasing them.

It’s perfect for autonomous driving when you won’t need those things in the first place. The Yoke is great for flooring it. But yeah rn it gets forced on you. And touch buttons are never a great solution.

Thanks, great review. Rear room being tight, same as almost all other sedans out there if you have a big driver. I think they improved on the rear seat space slightly in this refresh. $40k for plaid too expensive? You kidding? People are willing to spend $1M just for a car that does similar speeds. $40k is peanuts for what you get, fastest car in the world…. If you can afford it, go the plaid of course… perspective…

There's a gap in the roofline at 18:51. Is that intentional? I don't see it at 1920 (the other side of the car) but that may only be the camera angle creating a faux view.

Good review but you didn't cover any of the underpinnings. What's different underneath; brakes, suspension, steering, front/rear castings, battery type and so on. The rest we can all see. The lack of leg support in the back seat you skipped over completely, that surprised me a lot as it's quite shockingly poor. I have no idea why this wasn't fixed during the remake, but maybe Monroe will let us know. The space in the back behind a 6'-5" front passenger is a bit mute as he can move the seat slightly forward without ruining his comfort, but point taken. Nice car, definitely my favorite Tesla. Long Range all day long.

Face it, the vast majority of Tesla Plaid buyers get them for one thing....they are the fastest cars on the planet (a caveat here that I should mention is other European cars that come fairly close to the Plaids performance usually cost at least double the Plaids base price, and the Rimac Nevera, which is about a half second faster than a Plaid, last week was certified legal for all countries safety requirements, will only have 150 models made and costs $2,400,000 before options!) that you can buy from a manufacturer that you don't have to spend an additional $20-$30K to modify them to still be slower than a S Plaid. AND for you folks that agree and have interest in speed rather than how far we can go on a charge, or how much your Teslas will be worth 3 years from now, or the minor fit and finish issues that are always mentioned by Tesla haters, and are usually taken care by Tesla when mentioned when you buy this Model, this will be right up your alley! The TOP LINE Lucid Air offers 1,111HP, while the Plaid offers a supposedly 1,020HP, BUT there is a KZbin video that has a Plaid on a 4 hub dyno that develops 1,101HP STOCK from the factory. The Plaid also weighs approximately 400 pounds LESS than the Lucid Air, and averages between $20,000 to $30,000 Less than the advertised $179,900 than the Lucid costs DEPENDING ON OPTIONS CHOSEN for each car. Last month a Tesla Model S Plaid in Napierville, Quebec set the new record for the fastest quarter-mile time for the electric sedan at 8.83 seconds and 161mph. The Model S had a stripped out interior for weight savings, as well as SV104 wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson drag radials at the rear and Michelin PS4 tires on the front. Not content with the blistering fast time, the same Model S Plaid has set a new record this week. At the same track in Napierville the Model S crossed the line in just 8.77 seconds at 162.55mph (261.60km/h), a 5.67 second 1/8 mile time and an outstanding 125MPH to 162MPH time in 3.1 seconds!!! As for what changed that allowed the car to go faster this time the owner, TMC user mulot30th, said there was an additional 60lb weight saving over the previous attempt due to someone else being behind the wheel on the run. Additionally he said there a slight change to the suspension. “Main change is suspension geometry change (slight) which reduce “tire drag” a little bit at least that is what I intended to do with that and have worked,” he said. Interestingly, the top speed at the end of his quarter mile run of 162.55mph is inches away from the electronically limited top speed (when not in Track Mode) of 163mph. As first told earlier this week, Quebec-based Ingenext was able to hack their way past that limiter and reached a top speed of 216mph (347km/h). As for this Model S Plaid, the owner says that while the car does not feel like it is slowing down when crossing the line, he feels there is not much room to improve beyond 8.77s with the current setup, but a BIG brake option available from Tesla and several other Tesla specific after market parts dealers at a much reduced price, and TOP OF THE LINE HIGH SPEED RATED STREET TIRES should also be used! You can check out the record runs both of TOP SPEED and FASTEST QUARTER MILE time on several KZbin 9

Very intuitive review of the Long Range Model S🚘. I get what Jon was saying about not having enough room in the back, if a 6'5" person sat directly up front. It wouldn't break the deal🤑 for me. I can't think 🤔of that many people who are that tall. Why would a kid be uncomfortable in a booster seat in the back 🧏‍♂️🙍‍♀️? They are smaller. Still a great review of the Tesla🙂!
