Nice, just a few days ago I switched from a 21" Uberturbine/Pzero set to a 19" Martian/Michellin All Season set to get ready for mild winter and Im very happy, it was shocking to see (and lift) how much those 21 wheels weight, they are HEAVY. So, I ended up saving about 20 pounds per corner! Suspension feels more forgiven and comfortable, car feels a lot more responsive and nimbler. I have noticed a small gain in efficiency in city driving, but it is worth noting that the stock 21s are very efficient, I will do a highway test soon. But I was mainly swapping for comfort and to open up the options of tires for the next time I swap them! I am happy with them.

Finally someone took one for the team, according to Bjorn, 18inch wheel is better than 19inch on MY for comfort and efficiency, more meat the better. Did you put the wheels on yourself or someone else did it for you? I have the same tires on my 19in Gemini wheels, I got around 279Wh/mi in LA traffic. That's an at least $4.5k upgrade that you did. The OEM tires only lasted 25k miles. Pirelli P7 AS PLUS 3 has 70k miles warranty compare to the OEM 40k miles warranty and Tesla doesn't offer OEM tire warranty.

Great content here! I have a MYP and was looking to increase the range and comfort. Went back and forth for so long between Martian Wheels and some of the others. Some online reviews mentioned that Gemini wheels on MYP would provide 20 miles more of range. But Tesla does not sell Gemini wheels to those who have a MYP. And then I decided to pull the trigger on EV01+ because that is the closest to Gemini with similar aero covers. I went with the 19" wheels because that's the smallest size they offer for Model Y Performance. And I got 255/45/19 Michelin Cross Climate 2's (all weather). And after 1500 miles I am getting about 5% efficiency gain. About 17 miles more range overall and definitely more comfortable ride quality with a 19" wheel. Note: I was also checking the size of tire and the tire options available on the 18" MW03 and the 19" EV01+. I could not find the Michelin Cross Climate 2 for 18" wheel size that would fit the Martian wheels. And so I decided to go with the 19" Ev01+. I am not sure how much range efficiency I would see on an MYP with the 8.5" wide MW03 with 255/50/18 or a 255/45/18. Kyle and i1Tesla have done speed and range test with a MW03 on a 7.5" width wheel size. That is a custom size created by Martian for Out of Spec Motoring.

I run a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus and in mixed city/highway driving average around 295 miles of range. I drove on the Gemini for awhile, and though not bad the larger tires on the current setup do offer a noticeably better ride quality. Hello, thank you for a very informative video. I realize that with the set up you recommend, the quality of the ride will improve. Yet, besides ride quality (or lack thereof…), the one thing I hate about the factory wheel/tire setting on my Model Y Performance is that I’ve ended up scraping the wheels. I’ve been thinking about changing the set up to a smaller wheel (18 inches perhaps?) and larger (and wider) tires to avoid this scraping issue. What tire/wheel set up do you recommend?
@BeardedTeslaGuy Жыл бұрын
Yes the tires specd for factory wheel options are the minimum width for lower rolling resistance which means wheels are just as far out as the edge of the tire. I have in the description exactly what I went with and I’m very happy
@TrevorATX Жыл бұрын
Putting these on will make it faster 0-60 as well. You will just sacrifice handling around the corners. I believe 19 inch martians on a MYP made it from 3.5-3.6 to a 3.28 0 to 60 which is really impressive.

Curious about your choice of tire sizing. I really like the Vredestein Quatrac Pro 235/55 R18 tires for the small footprint and weight savings however Discount Tire and Tire Rack both state this tire isn't rated for or acceptable with the Model Y. I see the load rating (104) is good and speed rating (V) is 149mph which should be more than I'd ever need. I just have the AWD version Model Y with 4680 battery out of Austin. Not a LRMY out of Fremont. You appear to have a Performance out of Fremont. Have you had any issues with that tire size on curves? I'm told it's too narrow. Not going to hold you to anything of course...just curious about your experience with the narrower tire.

These wheels and tire sets cost $3,500+… if you had 20” induction wheels before, this is a hefty upgrade.. improved range and efficiency are okay, but if you actually calculate the difference in electricity bill, it’s only about $2-$3 saving per month… it will take over 1000 months of charging to break even for the money you spent on these martian wheels. I think MAIN benefit of doing these 18” or 19” wheels is solely improved ride comfort
@BeardedTeslaGuy Жыл бұрын
Yea, this is NOT a payback upgrade. This is comfort and looks. If you forgo the induction wheels, you are in about 3k for this set with tires I bought
@GROGU1237 ай бұрын
There are actually 2 other reasons to buy these wheels. 1. The 20 inch wheels even with all seasons are horrible in the snow. 2. The 20inch wheels only have a 750kg load rating which limits your tow rating to 2700lbs I believe. The 19” gemini wheels have a 820kg load rating to get the full 3500lbs tow rating. These forged martian wheels are 1000kg load rated so you can also get the full 3500lbs tow rating. Plus be able to move to a smaller tire for ride comfort on road trips.
@jamesbuchanan34392 жыл бұрын
It is so nice benefiting from your evidently ceaseless research! Do you suppose that this upgrade option is worth it if the Y has original Gemini 19” wheels ? (The Geminis would be used with the Pirelli Sotozero snow tires that we already have; we have been sharing the wheels; which is a pain…)
@BeardedTeslaGuy2 жыл бұрын
I really think there’s a chance to gain some range even compared to Gemini. Especially with snow tires. As you can see the Vredestein tires are the lightest and narrowest of the options. There are of course additional options out there, but not many I’d recommend strapping on a 60k car. But that said, the Vredestein tires are severe snow rated, meaning more aggressive tread which would not likely be low rolling resistance. I’d probably try the Michelin tires out, as they are made for low rolling resistance. Then, keep your winters on the Geminis and when the weather is nicer, swap over to the Martians. Just my thoughts. And I appreciate you gain value from my research. I can’t help it because I am analytical lol

Martian wheels recommended 255/55r18 on website should i return and go 235/55r18? Where did you get the info for 235/55r18?
@BeardedTeslaGuy Жыл бұрын
The 235 will get you a narrower tire. It’s as narrow as you can go with this width wheel. I did it for less rolling resistance

Do you know why your car is 82Kwh but your 100-0 is 71kw? I just took a road trip and extrapolated something similar for my 21 M3LR. About 72.7kw useable??? Does that mean battery is 10kw degraded?
@BeardedTeslaGuy2 жыл бұрын
No, there’s a buffer in there that you won’t be able to ever use and then there’s a buffer at 0%. You can’t actually use 100% of the battery capacity because it would brick the battery

I got the Pilot Sport All Season’s and put them on my Gemini wheels and they look awful. The don’t fit to the rim like the continental did. You have a gap of a few centimeters, even worse than our Performance when they had the Pirelli’s on them. The look HORRID! Tire Rack says that’s just how they are and I need to get “something else”.
@BeardedTeslaGuy2 жыл бұрын
Yea that’s not a good look.
@Turbo60192 жыл бұрын
They look very nice, the weight savings am sure is good and the larger sidewalks am sure will give you a softer ride…but IMO I prefer larger wheels for looks and safety.
@farukcarushi49832 жыл бұрын
Safety?
@BeardedTeslaGuy2 жыл бұрын
Bigger wheels will always look better in my opinion as well. But the ride is much improved so I’m loving them
@Turbo60192 жыл бұрын
Safety because of a blow-out/flat situation. If you get a blowout/flat with a tire with bigger sidewall vs a thinner sidewall then you will understand what I mean but it’s just basic physics.
@BulletProofBreast Жыл бұрын
@@Turbo6019 it's an interesting scenario, because you're far less likely to get a blowout with the smaller wheel, but when you do, you do have a larger difference in outside diameter since the tire sidewall is thicker. I'd still say a smaller wheel is overall safer given the risks

Nice! I opted for the Induction 20” for more ground clearance. I was concerned about ride, but on my ‘22 MY, it’s not a problem. I haven’t noticed any harshness or sharp jolts. But, I have seen some tracking on pavement edges, more so than on traditonal width sidewalls. That may have more to do with tread pattern, though. If I can keep the ground clearance, I might choose the 20” Martian to cut weight and improve efficiency. 4% is not bad, not bad at all.
@BeardedTeslaGuy2 жыл бұрын
Ground clearance? The diameter of both Gemini and Induction are the same. Ground clearance is the same

By getting such beefy tall sidewalks, you actually added all the rotational mass to the outer most portion of the wheel, hurting a large amount of the range benefit you could have gotten.

Yea these ended up being the heaviest tires in this size. I could have also gone with smaller tires but a recalibration would be required at Tesla for the speedo
