Just installed one on my Model Y. Great instruction, thank you. I really appreciate the effort you took explaining the very light torque setting. I went very easy. I think really muscling down on that might crack the glass, so you've probably saved a lot of Tesla glass. Now I have to figure out how to get my kayak up there without scratching anything..... I'm thinking of 'handles' strapped with webbing, lift it right up over my head. No cradles (I've had Yakima and Thule, overpriced, under perform, wind drags) I'll carve up some foam.

I recommend getting some transfer tape for that "sticker". That way it is easier to align it in the middle, and squeegee it out from the center. A lot of these films can also handle some light soapy water sprayed on the surface, so it's possible to position it correctly before using the squeegee. That way you're temporarily deactivating the adhesive while adjusting. Using a hairdryer or a heat-gun on a low setting afterwards to heat up the sticker also helps to really activate it so it doesn't come off in a few months.

The Sonic series was phased out by Thule almost 5 years ago, but would technically fit those Tesla cross bars. The biggest issue we have run into is how the back trunk opens. Most of the boxes make slight contact with the rear trunk when it's opened. For all cargo boxes we recommend measuring from the middle of the front cross bar to the contact point on the rear hatch/trunk. You typically need 50-52 inches of Hatch Clearance to fit an XL sized Thule box. The current version of the Thule Sonic XL is the Motion XT XL with improved locking features and sturdy design. Thanks for the great video, it was a simple install following your steps but for some reason rear right rack attachment to the roof is slightly wiggly, front rack seems pretty rigid when I tried to shake excessively but rear right has slight move, do you have any idea on how to fix this or root cause this issue?

Hello. Based on your description, the clip that hook under the glass may no be completely centered in the designated area. You can move the clip within the area to feel the center point, and also double check the measurements. Hope that helps. Thanks!

Thanks for this. Answer a critical question: can I carry my sea kayak on a Model Y? Next questions: How much does the rack alone reduce range? (on my current car I just never remove the racks. They're also Yakima, but they don't attach as easily as these. Still I can't see removing them for all the days I won't be hauling a kayak) And second, what's the safest way to (single handedly) load an 18' kayak onto the roof of a Model Y? Based on 15 years of paddling, and hauling, kayaks I think I'd just carve and glue up some foam to cover the rails and rest my kayak on top. But getting it up there is the issue. Rest it on the pad at the front and then swing the back up and on? (A 'horn' on the front pad would allow it to pivot instead of slide). What about the glass? without clear information (from Tesla) I think I'd have a pretty significant pad on that roof glass to protect it while loading. While I think I do need to be more careful than I've been in the past, it is a solvable problem.

Hello. Tesla engineered the vehicle to accept this rack and to provide 165 pounds of carrying capacity. Insure that weight is evenly distributed front to back and side to side if the load is at or near the max. Thanks!

Very helpful video. The only comment is that at the end of the video, it’s mentioned the distance between the front and rear cross bars are 35 3/4 inches. I don’t know if that is accurate. I tried to put my Thule cargo box on it but the mount opening (which is 37 inches long) didn’t fit. When I measured from the front edge of the front cross bar to the back edge of the rear cross bar, it was 39 inches. The mount opening on the cargo box has to be longer than 39 inches to accommodate mounting brackets.

Still wouldn't be helpful when making sure your cargo box will fit on the cross bars as the width of each bar extends beyond the marked arrow points in both directions.

That measurement helps us generally pick which size boxes to show our customers first. Grabbing the measuring tape is pretty much my step one with any cargo box sale. Everything is reversible (covers off, unlock bolt, unscrew, take off bars X 2, take off rubber mounts X 4, take off mounting hardware - the bolt with U-shape end under the rubber weatherstrip). My only question is about the 3M plastic - whether it is reusable or you can get new?

If you plan to keep the bars on the vehicle, It would be best to install the bars first so the wrap isn't damaged. At the end of the day it shouldn't matter as there is no permanent modifications being done to the vehicle. Hope this helps!

The weight capacity for this base roof rack is 165 pounds evenly distributed. The load bar length is 45.5 inches (front) and 40.75 inches (rear). Distance from the front load bar to the rear is 35.75 inches, center to center.

When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...

I agree. it all rely's on the glass. Wondering how many glass roofs have been damaged by the rack?

It’s not attached to the glass at all. There’s a metal slot area (6:50) that the clip slips underneath. If installed properly, as he does in the video, nothing touches glass. Any reports of glass being broken is because users did not properly place the metal clip in the metal slot.
