It has a trendiness to it. And it was nice to have gotten a comprehensive sense of exactly how far Tesla has come. Anybody who doesn't think the progress is amazing needs to get help. What this company has done is astonishing considering the time scale. It's a lot like the 3, but slightly bigger. Slightly shifted to utility. What are you left with? A mid sized SUV. With great performance compared to ICE equivalents. Not even comparable. Blows ice equivalents out of the stadium. And eventually industry leading automated driving. And still S3XY. It's going to sell like bananas.

I think the by far the biggest change he brought to this market was encouraging the competition... by making all his patents freely available to the world. How many of the selfish old men in petrol car industry would have done this? This is saying that the change to electric cars/sustainable energy is more important than any one company...
@kittimcconnell26335 жыл бұрын
Excellent points! I think you are correct, Musk sees humanity's future as more important than his ego.
@bunzeebear29735 жыл бұрын
I can't say for certain, but in the early days of making cars, there probably was a fair amount of sharing knowledge and skills and techniques because cars were really new. Patents would not have been the number one focus. Building a car was. Remember some one had to cast the engine block and machine the crank and the cam and figure all the stuff out. That was no single person doing it all. You have to think PRE MODEL T days. They learned from each other...in making everything for the first time(and that was improved upon as time went on) By having the various inputs, that is how cars got made. The competition for company makes happened much later when everyone knew the basics on how to build an engine. All are still ICE from the first days. Then a German dude went a different route and designed and built the first diesel engine.(which uses some components of a gas engine and not others. He got that to run on grain oil for farmers as a cheap energy source. For farm equipment...which was simple and reliable. Some other German invented the rotary engine. Limited success. All the car makers have been in the business of making cars longer than Tesla. He said the hardest job is setting up the factory to do everything. The car manufacturers that do everything NOW, only need to change the power plant and how the battery is to be made to be put into the car frame. Tesla just used the patented stuff already made such as regenerative braking and utilized it in a vehicle. Battery tech was known. He just arranged it differently. The wheel was known so he borrowed that tech. He has not made anything NEW. He just used what we already knew and was patented. and slapped it together into a working package.

Yeah, he implemented fast growing daily use technologies into the cars, which any big car boy could do it long ago but didn't. Now they all have to be creative to be able to compete or some even survive. Elon didn't invent electric car, it was made long time ago, but because the same old farts it never made to mass production. Tesla is a great business model no doubt, and amount of hype around it is impressive
@TheGrayWolf815 жыл бұрын
@@globuslive The reason electric cars never made it to production over 20 years ago was because the technology simply wasn't available. The problem was the means of storing the energy to power the car. Lithium batteries were still a relatively new technology and very expensive and only used in smaller applications. Other battery types proved to be inefficient or impractical. NiCd, for example, has too low of an energy density. NiMH, while having a modest energy density, has a low life cycle. And lead acid batteries are simply way too heavy and bulky. The idea of an electric car has been around for a long time, just the technology was not available or was impractical due to the costs at the time. Battery technology has since advanced and is made much more affordable.

I am very, very impressed with this company / range of cars / man. He stated a long time ago that his goal was to be a catalyst for change to electric in transport. Whether he/Tesla alone have been that, I could not say, but he/it surely must be a massive contributor to the changes now taking place. I would love one of these, but someone like me could only afford the smallest/least expensive one at best - and only on finance. I saw an actual Tesla car (as opposed to video or pictures) on my way to work a few days ago here in Central Japan. I am guessing it was the model S. I did not know what it was to begin with, so I rode closer and thought about overtaking it. Without a sound (the driver must have thought it amusing), it left my bike behind like a fighter plane leaving a bi-plane behind. Involuntarily I made a 'whoop-whoop' sort of sound. Now I want a Tesla car (or perhaps Honda's small electric car due to be released in 2019 if romours are to be believed).

He should take advantage of solar power and create a self charging Tesla vehicle. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
@mzs1120005 жыл бұрын
That won't work very well. A Tesla Model Y, assuming it has a 75kWh battery can travel 4 miles per kWh. If you were to cover every surface of the vehicle with solar cells(this excludes windows), you could get, under absolutely perfect conditions, 1kW of peak power output from the solar array, most likely you would only get 500W of continuous solar output. If you leave your car parked for 8 hours per day, the car will receive 4kWh of energy. That is enough to drive 16 miles. Under best-case conditions, you will receive only enough energy to travel 16 miles. Alternatively, it could take a decent bite out of air-conditioner load on a hot summer day, or be used to cool the battery, but otherwise, it won't help very much. Maybe, with high-efficiency cells, a solar roof might benefit a old Nissan Leaf, since the battery is so small, that power could be used to cool down the car on a hot day(just constantly running the fans when parked could cool down the interior by 60f... And, it would take a good chunk out of the air-conditioner power usage, extending the range by not using as much battery power, but that's only on a car old enough to have a 24kWh battery.

@The Catmother A massive solar farm in space? The economics of that has been explored at length before. As of right now, even if it was technically feasible ATM, it would cost many times more than a similar array on Earth. @@Charles-fc9gi I'm not a big eco humanist or anything. Where do you come up with that ecological number though? I used to think the same albeit not to that extent. Since then I've read reports that Elon pushed to get practically all Cobalt out of his lithium giga factory (very minimal levels compared to other/previous lithium ion tech). Cobalt is the main argument in that stat iirc. To answer your question: I don't wanna pay for service (as much); I want free charge (it's all over around here); I want 0-60 3.5s instant power in a family car that sits 7 (yaaaaas!); also I like the assist driver features,screen and updates. The prospects are great and wifey doesn't drive so well so it's encouraging for her. It's quite an amazing feat. I'm really excited on getting rid of Bimmer at 80k mi. Sucks this Y doesn't rls in fall 2020.

Juicy Hops the 700000km i heard a lot, if you look it up you might find studies that show this, but they a bit hard to find because governments and car companies dont like these studies, they both want to go electric in the future, so they are really not a fan it, also mediacompanies like to follow the people opinions and dont want to get a bad reputation, so there arent many that promote it. And yea, i think production will get better in the future, its just that these battery companies dont have a lot of competition with other companies, so they can keep prices high and dont care if they pollute. And yea if i was you, i would probably do the same, i would just worry that the tesla wont survive more than 5-7 years in good condition, because it a bit unknown for a young company. If you live in the us, i think tesla is not so bad yes, but i live in europe and tesla is here really expensive, but German cars are much cheaper and look a lot nicer, american taste is probably that tesla is nicer i think. btw, what car do you have right now?

*It's very simple. If Elon wrapped the Planet at the Equator with a "Plug-In" seamless Power Bus and Solar Panels. The Solar Panels on the "Lit" side, would power the Night Side with seamless power distribution. Then add 2 more "Wraps" on either side of the Equator, just north and south of the tropics.*

@timothyblazer17495 жыл бұрын
I would very much like a non computer controlled electric vehicle. Many others would as well. The notion that self driving will become compulsory is an anathema to many, including myself. I sincerely appreciate what EM is doing, and I am amazed at what he has been able to accomplish... however his push towards total software control, as well as nerfing major features due to aging battery packs, is worrying, and produces a great deal of consumer concern. Especially in the used market. In addition, we should be able to buy power from superchargers at will, without warranty. We should be able to drive our vehicles without them being connected into the Tesla network. We should be able to work on our own vehicles, to replace our own battery packs, and to change the operative parameters of our drive train. Sure, warranty coverage would go away as a result, however we should not be barred from using supercharger stations as a result of this. That is pure market dominance, as well as planned obsolescence, and is not a good corporate strategy.
