Tesla reveals the future of the power grid | Engadget R+D

A partnership between Tesla and KIUC's (Kauaʻi Island Utility Cooperative) -- is vast -- 45 acres of solar panels situated among rolling green hills. Panels dip and rise with the contour of the land, feeding the energy of the sun to a 53MWh array of Tesla Powerpacks -- white boxes filled with batteries. That's more than double that of Tesla's battery Powerpack project in California.

When you do get the solar panels don't finance them. If you move before you pay it off the new homeowners would have to take it on, which makes it less likely to buy your house. It is best to start with the few you can afford and add on later.

What???!!! Are you telling me that you can read every new buyer's mind? Houses that have financed solar panels (NOT leased) in California are in much greater demand than houses that have no solar. Many house buyers will even pay a margin on the value-add that comes with recently installed solar panels and a home that has close to zero utility bills.

if you use graphene coated magnets in the sea you can convert saltwater motion to electricity 24-7. graphene creates electricity from the moving dissolved ions in sea water. this can provide a stable back-up to the solar energy input

Actually the main reason is that we still can't mass produce graphene... and it's certainly not economically viable to use such large quantities of graphene for power generation... seeing as we can't yet afford to use tiny amounts of graphene in semiconductor manufacturing with chips 1cmx1cm and selling for hundreds of euro a piece.

there is a cheap easy way now using the interface of water and oil to make graphite into graphene. also there is the university of kansas's method using acetylene in a detonation cell (and the russian petrick method for making it from coal)

It is true that a stored pile of coal is not wasting energy. However the process of getting that coal there needs to be considered. Also, thermal power plants waste about two thirds of their fuels energy as heat. Batteries storage wastes about five percent charging the batteries and about five percent to convert back out as electricity. Regarding the issue of intermittency, in this case long-term cloudless periods, it is unlikely that the sun will never shine and the wind will never blow. Or as it is Hawaii, wind, waves, and geothermal will cease. The likely solution could be is a larger distribution network. It is still an issue, but the data is looking good.

A lot of Wave technology is taking place in Scotland. Using the water & currents & high/low tides causing electricity generation. This could quite easily supplement this project. On days of bad weather you would still be generating electricity.

Google "load balancing the grid" batteries have never been needed for millisecond reaction time or any other reason. Battery r often sold as package with sources of electric like PV that r intermittent. Even if alternatives could be better ppl r just to lazy to invest time into long term project vs just wanting fast simple solution of using batteries. So its not an engineering issue it about the psychology of wanting the easier solution.

For load balancing and other predictable things true - but what about abrupt plant or transmission failures? Gas generators take time to come online - batteries do not. Batteries can provide many ancillary services.

PV cells don't necessarily need a bright sunny day to generate electricity, with the right cells it can generate as much energy on a bright day as on an overcast day, to makeup and shortfalls in battery charging and if there is a fear then it can be supplemented by wind power!

I do believe that (flow batteries such as vanadium redox) are a better solution for islands. They last 30 years and have over 100,000 charge-discharge cycles. Temperature is constant over the year on such islands so it is not an issue. The capacity is limited only by size of tanks with liquid. There is practically no self-discharge. Also they don't explode or catch fire. Lithium batteries have maybe 1000 cycles and are usually rated for 3 years because capacity drops at least 10% every year. They will need constant battery supply from Tesla in order to change every failed battery in the array for years.

The degradation of rechargeable batteries is still not fully understood, but it seems that if you cycle a battery around its 50% SoC within a reasonable margin they tend to live way longer than their assumed 1000-2000 cycles. And from what I read is that the Tesla power packs have 200kWh of the nominal capacity of 100kWh but only use the nominal capacity to prolong the live of the packs.

Flow batteries do have great properties but they aren't nearly as efficient as li-ion is and they can't output a lot of power. More choices is good however.

Nice idea and yes it works. . . . But are you considering, are you including the cost of the Batteries. The environmental cost of making the batteries and then replacing them. . .. How long do you think it will be before those batteries need replacing. ? ? ? Solar panels can last for 50 or more years, quite likely to give better than 50% performance in 100 years time, if they are kept clean and don't get physically damaged in that time. But Energy Storage is the big problem, the big cost over the years and a potential very big environmental problem.

There are those that believe coating the planet in Lithium-ion batteries is not a good idea. There are also those that think renewable electricity can't make it if it has to pay for batteries too. In a spot like Hawaii (mountains in water) why not go for pumped storage?

A lot of talk about how expensive fossil fuels are yet for some darn reason Oklahoma gets most of its electricity from coal and gas and residents pay 9 cents per kWh. Hawaii with its "cheap" solar and "money-saving" batteries pays 38 cents per kWh. For California its 18 cents per kWh. Basically, don't build solar unless you want to pay more.

The islands aren't moving that fast. The Hawaiian island chain has been moving across the hot spot for about 5.6 million years now. The real problem is that the hot spot is only under the big island right now. It's not much help for Kauai.

There is a disconnect between this presented setting and the actual homes with installed solar panels in Hawaii. I should hear and see that this Tesla facility was established so that local solar panel owners can connect and make use of it as repository of captured solar energy. Solar photovoltaic technology should be enjoyed by the people, not just to support electric vehicle manufacturer whose product are expensive and is beyond the reach of ordinary citizen. There are reports in Hawaii that solar panel owners cannot switch on to start their systems to allow uploading of excess energy to the power grid, inactive net metering. In Nevada, the local power grid owner, changed the arrangement so that solar energy installation is discouraged and now the solar panel industry is stalled to dry and die.

I love any conversation about batteries and someone always has a better solution. For now Lithium ion is the best we have, and whaterver we produce will be useful for 25 years; 8-10 years in a vehicle and then 15 years for industry storage. And then it can be recycled. Any technological breakthrough can be pursued and whatever we do today will not be a wasted effort. Unlike the continued laying down of pipeline or coal subsidies which have a 30 year ROI. Why aren't Americans and Europeans investing in battery facrories now and start attacking the crisis.

Where are the wind turbines? Even small wind turbines will provide energy but it can be 24h/day. I agree that solar panels should be put on existing buildings and use the land for other things. How long do these panels last - 10 years? 20?. Anyone realise how much mining goes into producing these panels. These things are laden with toxic chemicals. Do they go in land fill when they wear out? How much are people saving on their bills in Hawaii. Notice he didn’t actually say. Solar should ONLY be on house or green house, not on vacant land. My new engine can sun on solar thermal and fuels as well as battery for mobile applications. These batteries could be useful, but not needed. Can get 80-95% of fuel gone. There is a better way.

The problem with hydrogen is the cost is actually higher than solar power with battery storage. Solar and wind will provide all the power needed by the customers. The real problem is the Hawaii power utility was recently sold to the largest power utility in Florida which has a history of not allowing customers to have solar or wind generators. And those that do they continually raise the rates and fees they pay to make them buy from the utility only.

The way to improve power storage, avoid curtailment, and regain the ability to expand solar energy is simple. We should use the excess power from solar energy to power massive pumps. We'll have water pumped upstream in a reservoir stored as potential energy and convert it back to hydroelectricity using a dam when power is needed. Simple, Eco-friendly, and probably more efficient than any battery in existence. Like if you agree.

Agreed, hydro power storage of energy is a great alternative. But there is very little incentives to do it. Tesla received 4.9 billion from the US govt. money. But electric rate in most places r not based on Demand and Supply rates r the same thru out the day, so there is no economic incentives or market to fund this project. That why we have these less eco friendly and costly batteries than this far better solution.

Can someobody help me start a Solar/Renewable Energy Cooperative here in the Philippines? We're a third world country. For 1st world countries it is more of an issue of convenience and the environment. With countries like ours it's more of an issue of "survival". Lower electricity costs here will lead to lower prices for education, health care, food, transportation. The list can go on. One of the greatest things the first world can do to help us is bring the low price of electricity and the long term help it will give countries like ours.

There are 100's of ways to Generate electricity...Unfortunately there is only 1 storage medium which gives you portablity, mass, yet is capable of huge charges and 20,000 discharges before reaching 85%...Unfortunately it is not Elon's Li-Cobalt-Manganese! The media isn't "scare mongering" about climate change. They're reporting the FACTS that everyone needs to accept, especially in light of the fact that the cheeto in chief thinks its a hoax created by the Chinese. In the next 10 years, many cities around the world will be flooded and that's not an exaggeration. Average global temperatures are rising and rising rapidly. The worst part? Unless we start sequestering carbon dioxide and methane on a large scale and do it quickly (we're not even close to that sort of technology) things will keep getting worse. We're too late. Even if the entire world stopped producing all greenhouse gases tomorrow, it wouldn't stop current climate change trends. Trump is into coal and oil because all of his cronies are and he wants to help make them (and himself) richer. He approved the keystone XL pipeline because he owns a ton of stock in the construction company that is building it. Trump doesn't care about creating jobs or he'd realize that the renewable energy industry produces more jobs than any other. He's all about this imaginary "clean coal" garbage and is concerned that wind turbines kill too many bald eagles.

Long after Trump and oil, we'll still need electricity. Hawaii is ideal for testing and perfecting solar energy collection and storage. Other area will prefer geothermal and/or wind power. So be it, as the entire world needs what little oil is left for more important things than mere burning! So delay the inevitable, and make renewables as efficient and reliable now, before the choice goes.

Mete Tuncay last time I checked it's not the federal government's job to build solar panels. If you want to build them than do it yourself. Or if the state government wants to build it than they can build it. The federal government has a specific set of duties defined by the Constitution. Building solar panels is not on the list. Sorry.
