Makes me think that Tesla sales employees get a large commission by getting a old Tesla off the road that has free supercharging (Tesla hates free super charging), getting that turned off, and getting that person into a brand new Tesla versus just somebody coming in for a new Tesla. every Tesla that they get off the road that has free supercharging is a win/goal for Tesla

Car dealerships will do this…they will “try” to fix your car and all of its problems, meanwhile a guy in their sales department is sending you emails asking if you want to sell your car. That’s what happened with me and my Ford Focus RS. There were so many issues that were instigated by one of their lesser technicians. Took me over a year to diagnose all the problems myself, but finally got it back to perfect working condition. That’s the extent you’ll go to when you love a car.

Actually Tesla has made working on your own car pretty easy. Service mode allows you to easily pair a new battery to the car both HV and LV battery which are both lithium. They also allow you to control basically everything on the CAN bus and the Ethernet Bus. Some modders have even been able to implement drift mode using an Arduino. Or you can just buy the S3XY buttons, probably the most impressive soft-mod kit ever made. You can change the drive motor bias on the fly, disable traction control, burnout mode with MAX regen on front motor and max torque on rear. Also custom rear sceens for older Teslas, and the ability to turn the lumbar support into a back massage (more like back rubber) That isn't even getting in to aftermarket suspension, breaks, wheels, aero. Look up Dark-helmet, that is a track car...

In my opinion, what makes keeping this Tesla a smart move is that you can enjoy it for a while, take care of the maintenance/small breakdowns it has yourself (generating content and money for the channel), and when it breaks down "serious" to sell it in copart or similar without losing too much money since most of the depreciation has already been borne by its previous owner... You know that one of the most expensive problems, which is the battery, is practically new, and for the rest you can surely fix things yourself, while as you say, if you buy a new Tesla, apart from having a lot of electronic toys that They take away your driving experience - and they can be prone to failure generating more expenses - you will have to deal with an extra cost in interest from a possible loan in addition to the initial depreciation, which is much higher in a new vehicle...

@Joshtheweatherman10 ай бұрын
What I keep telling people is to buy a high mileage Tesla, because you know the battery packs have been charged regularly, and the owner has kept up with maintenance. If you buy a lower mileage Tesla around the same year, you will more than likely have battery pack issues because it’s bad on the batteries if the car sits more than it does being driven. A high mileage one usually costs $12-16k. If you can get the $4k tax credit, you can get it for $8-12k. You can’t find many nice cars like this for around that price.
@Joshtheweatherman10 ай бұрын
What’s more crazy is that Tesla has never changed the body style other than the front face, and interior. I think they made the Model S a little wider to fit a bigger battery. But you’re still getting the same driving experience either way, it doesn’t matter how old. Now sure, the newer Tesla’s are much quicker, but I like having a comfortable car. And tbh, I think the seats in the older ones are a lot more comfortable than the newer ones. I’ve sat in a 2020 Model S, and a 2013 Model S. The 2013 felt more like a luxury car, while the 2020 felt like a sports car.

First off, No, there is no "software buffer" on a 90kWh battery in that car. If you want the pack to have minimal degradation, only charge to about 75% daily unless you need the extra range. If you need more range, charge to as high as you need, but avoid having it sit at high states-of-charge, the longer it does, the faster the degradation. Secondly, do not disable the TC and do burn outs, if the delta speed between rear wheels is too high, you can destroy the diff. (know weakness) If you want to do this install a Quiaffe LSD. On the heater, sounds like your PTC has lost performance, but that is not what's causing the blower motor to not run from the MCU. If it's not the blower amplifier or wiring (rodent damage possible), then the THC module located behind the MCU screen is bad. I have a youtube channel with lots of Tesla videos and have worked on over 3000 Teslas. Feel free to email me if you'd like any assistance (my email is in my channel's "About" tab).

New battery will be good for many years, better than original! IF...you dont NEED 100% charge, only charging to 80% is better for longevity. Less stress on the cells. The 85 vs 90 is simply maximum available capacity. You may be access, to use additional capacity, by paying for it at Tesla. Like a larger fuel tank, with fuel pickup was never lowered to be able to pump the added fuel. Also, charge at home, allow battery to "rest" about 30 minutes before driving. Again, better cell longevity. The replacement MCU should be fine. Try to cover the car/garage in high heat, to save the MCU. All of those electronics do not like heat. The rebuilt drive unit, do not drag race a bunch, that it how to ruin any drive unit from this generation. The motor bearings are what made them replacement under warranty. Better than original. No longer has lifetime supercharging? No big deal. You can still use the supercharger. Some Teslas of that generation do not have the hardware to use supercharger. That car is same/similar class to Mercedes previos CLS. You have quite the bargain buy! And probably the safest car you will ever have.

"Active Aero" refers to the front right and left grille shutters. The plaid does not have active aero. I believe this car is MCU2 because it has service mode. MCU1 doesn't have service mode. As for the PTC heater replacement, its not terrible to replace... Just a lot of screws and bolts. Check Tesla service manuals and it gives you the exact steps to take. Also be careful as the PTC heater is a high voltage component. You might, just might have to do a software reinstall once the new heater is installed. You can push a software reinstall through service mode. Also, keep an eye on the rear drive unit. That is the most common failure point on the P85. It's awesome it has a 90kwh battery! The battery like you said is softer locked to a 85 which is actually good because when you charge the car to 100%, the battery is really at 93%ish percent! Great content here, I love this car. I took my beloved 04 Honda Pilot with 100k for service (all fluids) a few months ago and they said my transmission was faulty and i needed to replace it at a cost of $3500 which i declined! I noticed it jumped when i shifted and when changing gears so i ended up replacing all the motor and trans mounts with brand new honda parts i found online and the engine and trans jumping went away. i spent like 300 bucks on parts! Dealers unfortunately are a rip off some are good but many just want to replaced whole assembly they don’t want to just replace the part they want to do everything because it’s easier and makes them more money!

What happened with the free super charging you mentioned in first video

Did the previous owner mention at what millage did the battery failed. And also other major problems started.? I'm guessing the car didn't give him any problems until after 200k miles. does that sound about right?

Were you able to get the free supercharging for life turned on for your car?

Selling it Tesla is what removed the lifetime free supercharging and free premium connectivity. Terrible move.

I injected grease (red something) into the upper link. Noises when away (noise started at 90k km)

I saw in another video that consumer was told the extra battery capacity will be released over time as the battery degrades. So charging to 100% still not a good idea. If that is true who knows.

Dealership was up selling. Any good mechanic would see that it was just the end links. That particular dealership ripped off the former owner. It’s not just Tesla who does this shady stuff.

Just for your an FYI: Tesla never installs a brand new battery for replacement, only uses refurbished or remanufactured one, whatever you call it.

bought one 3 years ago i still drive to this day 2014 tesla model s p85d and i paid 45k out the door in washington at the time it had 80k miles. came with extra set of oem 19 inch tesla wheels. well decided i want to see what tesla would offer for trade in. ive had mcu2 done and cars only at 104k miles. got offered 8500. what a joke. even private party value is not very good so weird how these cars depreciate so fast. one day you will get a decent running tesla for 1000 bucks..

I knew there was no way this had the original battery and motor - turns out just about everything major had to be replaced before 269k. And then they ripped off the original owner. You got a great deal, though.

It’s pretty old and has not a lot of modern features so I think a Chevy Malibu would be a good comparison if it was newer and had lot of technology maybe a Mercedes-Benz

Randy, does it have lifetime free Supercharging?

See if you have power into the blower motor fuse module. See if you have power out of the module. There may be a resistor on the resister module circuit board.

Doesn’t that car have unlimited super charging if that’s the case they will probably pay more or the resale value will be pretty good for someone
