What is the azimuth angle of the main roof? Capping out at 6KW seems pretty low. Did tesla mention anything about the panels on the other roof limiting your overall capacity due to them being on a string inverter?
@TeslaFamilyChannel3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Azimuth for my main roof array (20 panels/6.3kW) is 174. The other (4 panels/1.26kW) are west facing 264. Ideally, I'd love to have all 24 panels facing south but ran out of room on the main roof. I chose West for the remaining 4 panels to capture additional solar when the sun is setting and its still very hot out in the summer. My entire system is 7.56 kW so I'm sure that because my arrays are split, that's why I am capping out at 6-6.5 kW, but also, there are some efficiency losses you have to account for with solar panels.

I’m thinking about ordering solar panels. My only concern is that my roof is 11 yrs old. Idk if I should replace it before ordering. Do you have any advice on that?
@TeslaFamilyChannel4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the shape your roof is in at 11. I had two roofers come look at my roof before I installed my Tesla Solar just to get a few different options. Both said I was good for 15 or so years. Tesla will also evaluate your roof after ordering with an on-site home assessment. If you need a new roof either a roofer or Tesla will let you know. Also several years down the road if you do need a new roof, Tesla can remove the panels for the work to be done then reinstall after the work is complete. If you do end up needing a new roof now or soon, I would look into Tesla Solar roof tiles. I have a video on those too. Pricing has come down and should be a similar cost of a new roof plus solar.

Thanks for watching! Glad my video was helpful to you. Depending on what state you are in, many electric companies offer Net-metering. This works sort of like rollover data on a cell phone. So, has it been a month yet since you got your solar power turned on? Before solar, on average, how many Kwh were you using on a monthly basis? Don't count summer months. Are you using TOU with your electrical company?
@TeslaFamilyChannel4 жыл бұрын
Yes, one month was Aug 2nd. Before solar my monthly average was 749 which includes EV charging. We were on TOU before solar but now still working with Utility to switch back to straight rate plan. I'll have a one month summary video coming out in a week or so
@hanzelnuts84464 жыл бұрын
@@TeslaFamilyChannel In my case, it makes more sense for me to stay in TOU. Here in Los Angeles, SCE rate for people that has EV, the highest rate is from 4 pm to 9 pm. That's $.41 per watt. However, it's only $.15 per watt between 9 pm and 4 pm. So, with my TOU, I was able to save a significant amount of money when I charge the car any time between 9 pm and 4 pm. Before signing on with TOU, I was in a tier plan with SCE. Basically, if you use 150 kwh or less, you pay a certain rate. If you go over that 150 kwh, that rate increases to another level. Boy, was that a mistake.🤬🤬🤬. BTW, my monthly Kwh consumption is between 350 Kwh to 450 Kwh, not counting summer. And that’s with charging the Model 3 daily. 50 miles a day driving. So, that's between 10-15 Kw weekdays.

@@TeslaFamilyChannel Yes, I have a solar system for the past 5 years now. It's only a 3.5Kw system. I wasn't able to get a bigger system back then because SCE didn't allow me. My monthly usage did not justify me getting a bigger system, according to SCE. Before solar, my average monthly bill was only $90. With my current system, I was still paying $40 a month. AND Yes, I have NEM. Since having the Model 3 and charging at home, my monthly bill has gone up since owning it. That's why I need to get another solar system. I'm very hesitant going with Tesla solar even though I'm in California. It's like Tesla central here. Teslas everywhere. Had to wrap my car in Xpel stealth so I can distinguish it from other model 3.😂 Anyway, I read a ton of reviews on Tesla solar. They're not good. Mostly a 1.5 out of 5. @@TeslaFamilyChannel Thanks for the response. I contacted Tesla this morning and said that they are scheduling an appt. at my house to "update the inverter" that will show the electricity consumption. I am not entirely sure what that means but hopefully this is a power blaster add-on.
@TeslaFamilyChannel3 жыл бұрын
Yes, hopefully it's the PowerBlaster, if added you will have a new breaker added to your panel box. Please let me know if they in fact do install the Powerblaster. Very interested to hear about this.

Do you think you will add powerwalls?

Thanks for watching! I would love to add one or two Powerwalls. When we first ordered back in February, Powerwall wasn't in our budget but since the recent price drop, Powerwall has better pricing.

Tesla Family Channel that makes sense, I currently live in a town home with a 25 year old roof. Thinking solar roof when the time comes. I also don’t know if I will be here in 5 years. I want solar so bad though! Nice system you got there!

Thanks Dave! Yes, with an older roof, the solar roof tiles are the way to go. Its an investment in your town home that pays you back so should also increase the value of the town home.

How can I do net metering on my Tesla app?
@TeslaFamilyChannel3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Do you mean how can you view power flowing to/from the grid? If you can't view it like I show in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnSufGOvos93ac0 then Tesla may require you to have Powerwall now in addition to solar to see that level of data.

Mine will never repay even one penny of themselves and I hate that. Tesla lied to me over and over again. I had cut the cord - cutting cable and land line and internet and I contacted Tesla on their online chatroom and told them that and said that I was interested in solar but only if I could have solar without needing to get internet because the cost of wifi and internet offsets my electric bill." and they said, "No problem. You don't need the internet. There are cellular options." and I reasked different chat box people a few times before buying online just to make sure. When the person texted me about pre-installation preparation, I asked him the same question and he said, "Nope, you don't need internet. It is just for monitoring. The system will still work without it." I brought it up again to the whole group of people who were there installing it and they didn't give me a gateway because I didn't need it because I didn't have internet. I re-asked on final time before inspection adding, "This is important because I only have 7 days to have the system removed" and he said the same thing. The problem is that the system didn't work and it took too long to figure out and so I got stuck with the panels contractually but they refuse to send a service person to give me an inverter that works. They will never service my account unless I get internet and if I get internet I lose even more money because there would be months internet would cost me more than the electricity to offset it and the fact that the electricity and internet are nearly the same price, there would NEVER be a time that even one penny of my electricity savings would go to panel price. I have internet access all day at work, plus unlimited data on my phone so internet at home would only be for my solar panels.

@@wishingb5859 sorry to hear about your unique situation. Solar is not for everyone, especially if your current electric rates from the grid are lower than either your loan payment or 20-30 year ROI.

@@TeslaFamilyChannel Yeah, unfortunately I have a $16,000 solar system that doesn't work at all and they won't even make it work. That is why I am frustrated.

If you only had internet...you could see the electricity flowing into your home and grid. I don't understand how it would be completely offline unless your utility didn't interconnect or swap out the meter correctly. I'd call your utility to confirm with them whether or not electricity is flowing into the grid.

@TeslaFamilyChannel3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I had the same issue right after installation. Try allowing a few days for the rest of the data to populate or power off and back on your gateway and the breaker which your PowerBlaster is connected to in your main panel. That should be labeled. If you don't feel comfortable with that or it doesn't work then call Tesla Energy Customer Service and they should be able to assist.

I ordered the large pkg. But had to downgrade because of roof space. Tesla has taken 4 weeks to move to the next step. 5 weeks from order and I just now received the plan. Waiting to make apt. For installation. After it's all over I'm expecting 90 to 120 days from order to power. I give Tesla a 2 thumbs down on the order process. Waiting see what the panels do when they get turned on to pass judgement on them. Tesla...I'm not impressed.

Thanks for watching and commenting, John. Sorry to hear Tesla is moving slow for you. I imagine the price drop has led to a higher demand in orders. If you feel like you need an update, I recommend calling Tesla Energy customer service or emailing/calling your Energy Advisor. I am quite sure that you will be very happy with the results once the system is installed and you get permission to operate.

@@TeslaFamilyChannel ok great so I believe you got the medium size system without any power walls correct? And my 2nd question is does not having a powerwall affect you since your are pulling from the grid when theres no sun or do you produce enough on sunny days that you have enough credits from your utility company.. im debating on whether is better to get a small system with a powerwall or medium system like you did without any powerwalls.
@TeslaFamilyChannel3 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Correct, Medium sized system without Powerwall. Your system size should be based on your current and even future needs. So when you order, make sure to be as accurate as you can with your average electric bill. I decided to not add Powerwall because here in Maryland our utility allows net metering. So you get credits for anything you push into the grid that you can use at night or a later time. If your area has a lot of power outages, I would highly suggest adding Powerwall. Yes, so far my solar generation is near balanced with my home usage. The winter will be when you might run short and need to draw from the grid more but in the summer you likely will over produce if your system is sized correctly. Check out my Tesla Solar playlist where I have several videos where I show my solar performance data. kzbin.info/aero/PLftZM83MNEFnCg9HIHkTeLR7_uj8OJ9UM

@@TeslaFamilyChannel ok sounds good iI will probably do the same but when I spoke to my utility company they said I get credit of 16€ per kwh from 8-4pm which is when I will be producing most of my power and that if I need to pull from grid from 4-9 pm I will be charged at rate of 43€ per kwh even though most of my credit will be coming at 26€ per kwh that’s for Southern California edison when you don’t buy a powerwall which is called the prime tier rate.
@TeslaFamilyChannel3 жыл бұрын
@@willywill3532 I would suggest to try an keep your electrical usage minimized from 4-9pm if you don't add Powerwall. Or ask if they have a straight rate plan. If Powerwall is in your budget though, its the way to go. I would have added to my system if my budget allowed back when I ordered.
