I’m in Maryland as well, glad to find your channel. We placed our order 8/19, just received the permit 9/4, scheduled the installation right away and found a slot for next week 9/10. Hopefully, we will have our system up and running by the end of the month. Updated 9/11, Tesla moved the installation date to 9/8 and 9/9, and they’ve finished the job before the heavy rain. woohoo!! Today, county passed the inspection as well.

How long did it take the GRID AND HOME usage to display on your app? I am on day 1 of my system being turned on.
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
It took me about a day or two for grid and home to show up. I also had to cycle the breaker for the PowerBlaster to get it to reset for data to flow. Did Tesla install a powerblaster in your panel box? I heard from another viewer that Tesla might not be adding Powerblasters anymore and may only be allowing you to view the solar production component of the app.

@@percyjen6490 A powerblaster is a small measuring device that can be installed in your panel box that measures the flow of current. That device is needed for the grid and home usage readouts. Thanks for sharing. I am a new subscriber to your channel. I have ordered a 7.2kw and 1 powerwall system from Tesla. Thanks for watching and subscribing! You should be able to fully charge Powerwall during the day with enough extra solar to power your home if your system is sized for more than 100% offset. What is the azimuth angle of the main roof? Capping out at 6KW seems pretty low. Did tesla mention anything about the panels on the other roof limiting your overall capacity due to them being on a string inverter?
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Azimuth for my main roof array (20 panels/6.3kW) is 174. The other (4 panels/1.26kW) are west facing 264. Ideally, I'd love to have all 24 panels facing south but ran out of room on the main roof. I chose West for the remaining 4 panels to capture additional solar when the sun is setting and its still very hot out in the summer. My entire system is 7.56 kW so I'm sure that because my arrays are split, that's why I am capping out at 6-6.5 kW, but also, there are some efficiency losses you have to account for with solar panels.

I’m thinking about ordering solar panels. My only concern is that my roof is 11 yrs old. Idk if I should replace it before ordering. Do you have any advice on that?
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the shape your roof is in at 11. I had two roofers come look at my roof before I installed my Tesla Solar just to get a few different options. Both said I was good for 15 or so years. Tesla will also evaluate your roof after ordering with an on-site home assessment. If you need a new roof either a roofer or Tesla will let you know. Also several years down the road if you do need a new roof, Tesla can remove the panels for the work to be done then reinstall after the work is complete. If you do end up needing a new roof now or soon, I would look into Tesla Solar roof tiles. I have a video on those too. Pricing has come down and should be a similar cost of a new roof plus solar.

Thanks for watching! Glad my video was helpful to you. Depending on what state you are in, many electric companies offer Net-metering. This works sort of like rollover data on a cell phone. Whatever electricity is being produced and not used right away by my home gets pushed back into the grid as a credit. I then use these credits later at night or another cloudy day and the electric company does not charge me for those credits since I am using what I already "banked". Hope that helps.

So, has it been a month yet since you got your solar power turned on? Before solar, on average, how many Kwh were you using on a monthly basis? Don't count summer months. Are you using TOU with your electrical company?
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, one month was Aug 2nd. Before solar my monthly average was 749 which includes EV charging. We were on TOU before solar but now still working with Utility to switch back to straight rate plan. I'll have a one month summary video coming out in a week or so
@hanzelnuts8446

@@TeslaFamilyChannel In my case, it makes more sense for me to stay in TOU. Here in Los Angeles, SCE rate for people that has EV, the highest rate is from 4 pm to 9 pm. That's $.41 per watt. However, it's only $.15 per watt between 9 pm and 4 pm. So, with my TOU, I was able to save a significant amount of money when I charge the car any time between 9 pm and 4 pm. Before signing on with TOU, I was in a tier plan with SCE. Basically, if you use 150 kwh or less, you pay a certain rate. If you go over that 150 kwh, that rate increases to another level. Boy, was that a mistake.🤬🤬🤬. BTW, my monthly Kwh consumption is between 350 Kwh to 450 Kwh, not counting summer. And that’s with charging the Model 3 daily. 50 miles a day driving. So, that's between 10-15 Kw weekdays.

@@TeslaFamilyChannel Yes, I have a solar system for the past 5 years now. It's only a 3.5Kw system. I wasn't able to get a bigger system back then because SCE didn't allow me. My monthly usage did not justify me getting a bigger system, according to SCE. Before solar, my average monthly bill was only $90. With my current system, I was still paying $40 a month. AND Yes, I have NEM. Since having the Model 3 and charging at home, my monthly bill has gone up since owning it. That's why I need to get another solar system. I'm very hesitant going with Tesla solar even though I'm in California. It's like Tesla central here. Teslas everywhere. Had to wrap my car in Xpel stealth so I can distinguish it from other model 3.😂 Anyway, I read a ton of reviews on Tesla solar. They're not good. Mostly a 1.5 out of 5. Congrats on your new panel installation! Is your system/installer Tesla or another company? After my installation I had to make my 1st 50% payment then Tesla called me to find out when would be a good time for the county inspector to meet. We coordinated a time and Tesla came to my house to do a video inspection with the county inspector due to COVID. Following that approval, you need interconnection approval and permission to operate from your utility company. That could take days to a few weeks. For me it only took 2 days. I received an approval email then called Tesla Energy to let them know I have PTO or Permission to Operate. I had to forward Tesla the email. Previous owner had the roof done so it has at least 15 or more years of life left. If I needed a new roof (old shingles) then I certainly would have added solar roof. Check out some of my first solar videos in this playlist where I provide a more in depth answer. Tesla Solar: kzbin.info/aero/PLftZM83MNEFnCg9HIHkTeLR7_uj8OJ9UM

@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@venelog22 Same with me. When ready to replace your roof, either scrap/sell the panels and order a new Tesla Solar Roof or call Tesla and ask them for a quote to come to your house and temporarily remove the panels while new shingles are installed. Depending on your current shingle rating, you should have a good 15 to 20 years left on the shingles.

do you have power optimizers
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacquelyn, I do not have power optimizer because I do not have significant shading of my panels. Here is the specific information from Tesla on the subject of power optimizers available at tesla.com "If Tesla determines that your solar system requires individual panel power optimizers, such as if your home has significant shading, then our engineers will design them in your layout. The cost of either inverter option is included in our standard solar pricing, but it will be Tesla’s ultimate decision to determine which is installed for your system as not all systems benefit from power optimizers."

Hey Shawn, I just got PTO from my utility company. What I have noticed is that in the app, I can only see what I am producing not what I am using. I noted in a previous video that you showed what you were using when you were charging your model 3. I have contacted Tesla and no one seems to know how to view both the output and usage on the graph. Can you, or anyone else help with this? I do not have a power wall but I do have a brand new model 3.
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on getting PTO! I have heard from other subscribers that Tesla is no longer including a powerblaster with solar only installations. The powerblaster is installed in your panel and tracks the direction of current. Without that device I think you can only track solar production from the inverter. As an alternative, while not live, you should be able to track home usage and power to/from grid on your utilities website or utility bill. The powerblaster is included with solar and Powerwall combo installations.

Mine will never repay even one penny of themselves and I hate that. Tesla lied to me over and over again. I had cut the cord - cutting cable and land line and internet and I contacted Tesla on their online chatroom and told them that and said that I was interested in solar but only if I could have solar without needing to get internet because the cost of wifi and internet offsets my electric bill." and they said, "No problem. You don't need the internet. There are cellular options." and I reasked different chat box people a few times before buying online just to make sure. When the person texted me about pre-installation preparation, I asked him the same question and he said, "Nope, you don't need internet. It is just for monitoring. The system will still work without it." I brought it up again to the whole group of people who were there installing it and they didn't give me a gateway because I didn't need it because I didn't have internet. I re-asked on final time before inspection adding, "This is important because I only have 7 days to have the system removed" and he said the same thing. The problem is that the system didn't work and it took too long to figure out and so I got stuck with the panels contractually but they refuse to send a service person to give me an inverter that works. They will never service my account unless I get internet and if I get internet I lose even more money because there would be months internet would cost me more than the electricity to offset it and the fact that the electricity and internet are nearly the same price, there would NEVER be a time that even one penny of my electricity savings would go to panel price. I have internet access all day at work, plus unlimited data on my phone so internet at home would only be for my solar panels.

If you only had internet...you could see the electricity flowing into your home and grid. I don't understand how it would be completely offline unless your utility didn't interconnect or swap out the meter correctly. I'd call your utility to confirm with them whether or not electricity is flowing into the grid.

Thanks for watching! I had the same issue right after installation. Try allowing a few days for the rest of the data to populate or power off and back on your gateway and the breaker which your PowerBlaster is connected to in your main panel. That should be labeled. If you don't feel comfortable with that or it doesn't work then call Tesla Energy Customer Service and they should be able to assist.

I ordered the large pkg. But had to downgrade because of roof space. Tesla has taken 4 weeks to move to the next step. 5 weeks from order and I just now received the plan. Waiting to make apt. For installation. After it's all over I'm expecting 90 to 120 days from order to power. I give Tesla a 2 thumbs down on the order process. Waiting see what the panels do when they get turned on to pass judgement on them. Tesla...I'm not impressed.

@@TeslaFamilyChannel ok great so I believe you got the medium size system without any power walls correct? And my 2nd question is does not having a powerwall affect you since your are pulling from the grid when theres no sun or do you produce enough on sunny days that you have enough credits from your utility company.. im debating on whether is better to get a small system with a powerwall or medium system like you did without any powerwalls.
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Correct, Medium sized system without Powerwall. Your system size should be based on your current and even future needs. So when you order, make sure to be as accurate as you can with your average electric bill. I decided to not add Powerwall because here in Maryland our utility allows net metering. So you get credits for anything you push into the grid that you can use at night or a later time. If your area has a lot of power outages, I would highly suggest adding Powerwall. Yes, so far my solar generation is near balanced with my home usage. The winter will be when you might run short and need to draw from the grid more but in the summer you likely will over produce if your system is sized correctly. @@TeslaFamilyChannel ok sounds good iI will probably do the same but when I spoke to my utility company they said I get credit of 16€ per kwh from 8-4pm which is when I will be producing most of my power and that if I need to pull from grid from 4-9 pm I will be charged at rate of 43€ per kwh even though most of my credit will be coming at 26€ per kwh that’s for Southern California edison when you don’t buy a powerwall which is called the prime tier rate.

@@willywill3532 I would suggest to try an keep your electrical usage minimized from 4-9pm if you don't add Powerwall. Or ask if they have a straight rate plan. If Powerwall is in your budget though, its the way to go. I would have added to my system if my budget allowed back when I ordered.
