I've had my Tesla Powerwall further offsetting my home's grid dependence for one full year now! I added a single Powerwall home battery to my Tesla solar panel system 15 months after they were installed. In this video, I share my first year Tesla Powerwall performance numbers including: Solar Offset, Solar Destinations, Powerwall Usage, Powerwall Efficiency, Energy Value, and Number of Backup Events from October 2021 through September 2022. During this time my Powerwall has discharged over two Megawatt-hours of energy to my home and Tesla Model 3. I'm also planning a little Powerwall experiment for my next video that I will share some details on.

Great information. I had a 8.8 kwh and 2 Powerwalls installed April of ‘22. It was more for luxury and convenience than anything as we live on the gulf coast of FL. The Storm Watch feature came on 3 days before IAN hit landfall, as we were in a tropical storm watch. Filled both Powerwalls. When the power went off at 2 pm on 9/28, my lights didn’t even flicker. I unplugged anything that wasn’t necessary, but left the AC on, as well as the fridge and coffee maker. (Necessities). Power was out until Sunday afternoon, but not for me. I was able to charge anyone’s cell phone, have cold beverages available. We even set up a portable ice maker in the garage for anyone who needed ice. Take a baggie of ice, add a bottle of water. The utilities in FL charge $28/month as a base charge to keep you on the grid, but that is all I have paid since turning on. I had no damage to solar panels during the storm, and we had sustained winds of 120 mph for about 6 hours.

Thanks for sharing this great experience of how solar/PW kept your home powered before/during/after Hurricane Ian. Also great to hear how you were able to help your neighbors. Perhaps some new customers now after seeing how your home stayed powered!

i got my system installed on Dec 27, had a minor outage, and didn't know the power was out. the app gave me an alert and I still had to go outside to double-check. happy so far.

I've been waiting since March of 2021 for my tesla solar in east Tennessee. You have the exact setup I ordered! I'm thinking about 2 powerwalls tho only because we don't have net metering and this is a all electric house. Your home power usage is the exact same as mine lol. I will probably have a tesla in the next 2 years though. Great video and break down! I didn't even see you posted this a while back sorry for the late watch! I've got an ecoflow delta max 2k with 800 watts solar to play with for our portable heat pump for backup and a 3500 watt inverter generator for longterm outages. Thanks for the video and I'm using you for our referral code! Wish me luck on getting our solar soon hopefully!

Thanks for watching and using my referral link for Tesla Solar! Sorry to hear your wait has been almost two years now but yeah hopefully it's coming soon for you. Good call on two Powerwalls, ideally I'd like two for my home also, but have been able to power the home for about a day with one and no EV charging. Great video. Look forward to your experiment result. Could you also share the daily charge profile for powerwall (0%-100%) for two typical days to for comparison purposes? I work at a battery company and very interested to see the state of charge (%) of this battery in this experiment, which will provide significant insights for product development. Thanks!

Thanks for watching! I decided not to continue with the experiment because I couldn't find as clear of a correlation as I thought would be worth the time of creating a video as I wanted. Basically, the recommended setting from Tesla of 20% reserved for backup was the most cost effective even considering power draw due to self-conditioning. Check out my entire solar and Powerwall playlist were I have shared tons of solar/Powerwall data. kzbin.info/aero/PLftZM83MNEFnCg9HIHkTeLR7_uj8OJ9UM

excellent video thanks. I have had mine for a month now and am loving it. one question though, as it is winter, I set the power wall to time based control at night so that it charges on cheap rate electricity overnight. This is between 00.30 and 04.30. After that it starts to discharge. then in the morning I have to change the setting to self sufficient mode, otherwise it keeps discharging even when my solar panels are producing electric. Even worse, if I don't set it to self sufficient mode, it exports any electric I generate. Do you find yourself doing the same or am I missing something in the settings. I cannot imagine Tesla would design it this way. hoping you can help. cheers from the UK. John

Thanks for watching! I just set it and forget it. Currently I'm set to 100% for backup as a ln experiment. Video coming soon. But before that my Powerwall was charged with solar only then after it's discharged I just draw grid credits (net metering) until it could charge back up again in the daytime. Do you have net metering in UK?
@juttley72
@juttley72 Жыл бұрын
@@TeslaFamilyChannel hi, no there is no equivalent of net metering in the UK. Here we pay two different tariffs depending on the time of day. 00.30-04.30 is 7.5 pence or anything outside of that time is 30 pence. anything I send to the grid as export I get paid 4 pence per kWh, which really makes me mad. That is why I try and capture and use as much as possible. Net metering sounds like a much better solution for customers.
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel Жыл бұрын
@@juttley72 yeah that does sound like an unfair situation get less from the utility than what you pay them. Sounds like your doing your best to capture as much of that cheap energy as you can!

Forgive me if I missed it, but, were the number of solar panels insufficient to keep your Powerwall charged sufficiently enough to power your Tesla without help from the grid, or was the Powerwall incapable of accepting enough power from the solar panels? Along those lines, would it be more beneficial to add more solar panels or a second Powerwall (provided that would even pay)? My thinking is that perhaps you would never have an electric bill but rather continuously supply power to the grid. (Do you only receive credits, or is it possible to receive cash?)
@TeslaFamilyChannel
@TeslaFamilyChannel Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Lots of factors at play here. Mainly what charge rate to the car, time of day for solar, and sunny or not. My Tesla wall connector can supply 11-12 kW to my Model 3. At peak performance my solar can supply ~6.5kW and my PW can supply 5 kW max. This is possible for about two hours before the PW drains or we come off peak solar noon production. If my Model 3 only needs about 20% charge to top off then that need could be covered without tapping the grid. Any more and we need to hit those grid credits. I could knock the car charger back a few kW to allow my system to work for a few more hours but it would charge my car slower with no significant gain by doing so. You'd have to price out a larger system of panels ( higher production) or more Powerwall ( higher storage) to see what may benefit you more. I would side with more panels though for overall higher home offset. In MD, I earn credits for excess generation but also have a once per year pay out where my credits can be converted to cash if value is higher than $25.

LFP batteries are MUCH MUCH safer than tesla batteries and many are quite a bit lower cost. Perfect scenario for homeowners are 400w america made solar panels (Solaria, Silfsb, Mission and Aptos are all outstanding and not imported like white labeled tesla panels (Q cell) coupled with Enphase IQ 8 microinverters.

@@TeslaFamilyChannel I was surprised you guys had one given the size of the house, but I’m glad you guys are being resourceful enough to make it work. I’ve seen a lot of people who have more than one with all the solar and felt they can use more electricity than before, which I feel is counterproductive in the long run
