My factory system was pretty dated. I wanted to be able to run apps like GPS for when I don't have cell service. Carplay was also really important to me day to day so I can listen to my music, podcasts, texts, etc but not be looking at my screen.
So far so good.

Nice review. I’ve got an 03 and going to pick one up. Two things: 1) personal hotspot with iPhone is their restriction to prevent drain. Meaning you have to toggle it off and then on again on the phone and then the android unit will pair over WiFi fine on its own. 2) grab Lux lite or similar for brightness at night. You can go super dark. I was going to get a yocto-light or similar if the Phoenix doesn’t have an ambient light sensor to auto switch at night.

I'm looking at picking up a GX470 and I've had my eye on the Tesla style screen....pretty sure your review is going to push off the fence on it. Any real regrets now that you've lived with it for a bit? Liking running Android auto on it, upgrading the rear camera and having a front camera. Those are my big 3 Pros for it.

Thankyou thankyou thankyou for sharing, i just received mine the other day as what i got pissed about,,, NO HAND BOOK or any info,so im just going through you tube and getting some hints and tips and found you,,what i found really annoying was the fan and heater and mode controls its very fiddly as maybe i need more time and also the screen in the sun when trying to read the screen is so fustrating because of the glare,,had to pull over to touch the screen because sometimes i hit a bump on the road ans my finger doesnt go to were im pointing to,,,is there anything or addresses that u know of were i can get updates from that may help,,,also when using the gps and my radio is turned on the the sound between the radio and gps is not in sync with each other,,any tips,,appreciated and thankyou

Thanks for the excellent video! You have helped me figure out a lot of the basics on this unit that are otherwise unexplained and I never would have figured out myself! Did you have any issues with you A/C controls? I can only control fan speed through the unit currently. Temp control is unavailable and my manual press buttons on the side of the screen are not functional either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you gotten the custom firmware? That solved pretty much all my problems. I have not had any issues with the AC or fan control.

I don’t use Bluetooth. I use CarPlay and it has an echo. I usually use my airpods when on calls. I think all car phone systems sound terrible.

The only issue is that we can't get the iPhone's screen onto the Phoenix screen. Not a show stopper, but curious as to why it's not working. Everything else is great. Thanks!

Do you know if the audio gains setting is part of the firmware upgrade? I have a PX3 and I don't see the setting for Install Set. Instead there is a setting for advanced and it doesn't provide settings for gains.

I can’t really remember what it was like before the firmware upgrade but I want to say that there was something called console where I could change the amp gain settings.

Looks great ! I have an 04 gx and am looking at this for an upgrade. I have a couple of questions. What happens to the nav unit under the passenger seat ? They all become unnecessary. I actually took out DVD player from the center console which created a cavity. I then installed USB power there so the middle row can charge their devices.

It’s from the factory on the sport model. But I have seen guys vinyl wrap their wood trim so it’s less ... well ... “dad wearing socks with sandals.” 😂😜

Absolutely. You can make those totally go away until you swipe up to reveal them. With a custom firmware.

GX Overland sweet I’m glad to hear that. If you could choose, would you rather keep the Tesla style or do a true non nav conversion with one of those 9” units made for the Prado/GX? I found a great deal locally on these Tesla ones but I kind of really want to have physical AC fan control buttons.

No question. The Tesla style screen is bomb. After I got the custom for more, it has been flawless.

With this unit you can replace the factory navigation. We just installed this on our 2004 GX470. We now use Wayz for our navigation. It's awesome!

Whenever it is connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot, I can do anything a tablet can do. You could even pull up to a Starbucks to connect. But I cannot play DVDs. I just got a cheap hotspot from T-Mobile. I believe the unit was actually free and I paid $10 a month. It connects to the OBD port and connects automatically.

This is off subject, but try some leather cleaner/conditioner on the steering wheel. You'd be surprised how it can transform the wheel feel! Like-new leather! I did it on my 09 GX with 112K miles and it looks and feels like new! And the shine is gone, just a nice natural sheen left!

I’m pretty sure that the software is contingent on the hardware. For example, I have 8.1 if I try to update to 9.0, the sound will not work because the 9.0 versions have hardware that I do not have.

I think there may be a way to integrate the factory one but the aftermarket one is much higher resolution and I needed to move mine anyways because my rear tire carrier blocked the factory back up camera.

OEM backup camera has a 6VDC trigger instead of 12VDC used on the aftermarket cameras so you would have to deal with that. Might be a way to use the OEM housing and only replace the actual camera though.

Thanks for all the great information!! I installed my new unit yesterday Android 9.0 4gb ram 64 rom. My settings screen is setup totally different. I played around in the advanced setting menu, not all of my digital climate controls work(some do work). The driver and passenger climate digital numbers do not show at all.... like yours? If i go with the software upgrade will it update the canbus for the climate controls to work?

Yep! That's exactly what I run whenever we're out. Set my favorites on my phone (automatically syncs) and then download the map offline on the head unit.

I believe that if you go to the settings you can do a reset to factory settings. Have you tried updating the firmware to the custom firmware I have in the video? The developer can help you far more.

It has a GPS unit and can use google maps or Waze. I use CarPlay and Apple Maps.

They are not hard to install if you are careful and familiar with stereo installs. CarPlay was an add-on when I purchased my unit but they do come with a rear camera.
