Tesla Style Head Unit Review in my 2017 Cadillac ATS

In this video I go over the screens and provide my thoughts on the "Tesla Style" head unit I recently installed in my 2017 Cadillac ATS.
These are Android based tablets that interface with your vehicle's infotainment system. They can be purchased here in the US from Phoenix Automotive and Rhino Radios. Don't be fooled, those companies are sourcing from China and then reselling to you with an 80% to 100% markup.
Just be aware that these units can be sourced from China (alibaba.com) for much cheaper and they will arrive in about the same amount of time. Mine arrived 15 days after I made payment and mine included the HD back up camera to replace my stock camera.

My cue system was perfect no scratches no issues. But my blend/mode doors for hvac stopped working and I had to have them replaced. The shop that did the work (Babcock auto in Rochester Mn) damaged the cue screen. Shattered 3 of the 4 corners. They were Going to fix the screen but submitted it to warranty instead of manning up and admitting they damaged it. Warranty meant I’d have to pay a deductible and I didn’t feel like I should’ve had pay anything for their fuck up. So I decided forget them and bought this unit. I’ll keep my factory cue system put in storage and fix the screen myself and if I ever want to go back I can.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I’ve watched just about every video I can get my hands on. I must admit, yours has been the most thorough and elaborate. I purchased a Px6 unit for my 2015.5 Escalade. Took some head scratching and some well placed words to get almost perfect with my OEM functions. The only issue I’m having (with no help from Phoenix of course) is setting the “car type”. What system/version are you running? Would you mind sharing a screenshot for reference? It’s not a huge issue. I am going to try your layout and I’m sure that will appease me for awhile lol.

I have basically the same unit from a different supplier but my question, is there something special, setting, etc., that makes the radio on the unit work. Mine shows up but nothing works. Also, did you have any issues with your onboard microphone working on the phone via bluetooth?

Yes you can bro get the power from the battery to the amp ground from the frame and rca adapter from the rear oem subwoofer I’ve done it on mine

Thanks for the video. I have a question regarding remote starting. I live near Chicago so warming the car up via remote start is important in the winter for me. Can the seat warmer, defrost functions and heat be set to come on with a remote start? Do these functions remain on/off based on what the car had been running when shut off previously?

I cannot be positive, however, usually when remote start is used, the radio doesn't power up, therefore, it will not start functions like seat warmers, heat, etc...

Thanks for creating this video, I just purchased a Tesla screen for my 2013 Cadillac XTS, I took it to a shop for them to install it & they warned me that there is a big chance that I may not get any sound from the unit once they have installed it. They also said if that's the case, they would need to add a Amp & 4 speakers & rewire my vehicle to get the sound to play. My question is, did you have problems with no sound in your vehicle when you hooked yours up? Or do you know why some people don't get any sound from the unit when they install it? Is there something in the settings that you have to adjust? Or some wiring that needs to be done differently? They said they installed these units on several different car makers & the only one that fully worked was a Nissan. They also warned me that there have been issues where you may not get heat & or air. I've read that online as well from some people. If you can give me any advice that I can use or tell them that might be useful in regards to the sound not playing I would appreciate it very much. 🙏🏽

I had issues with sound at first, yes. You need to make sure the AUX plug is being used to get sound out of the system. Surprisingly the GPS/radio are their own unit and audio will come out of those when you're not in AUX input mode. I never had an issue with heat or air.

@@jhawk1977 update! So I got my unit installed yesterday & I only get sound when I use Spotify & maybe making a call through the mobile hot spot. I don't have the cue features like you have in yours. Also, I can't get into the extra settings with any of the numerous codes I have searched online. I don't understand the getting sound from the aux to play KZbin, navigation etc.. I need that explained to me more in details. Is that something that the technician needs to hook up when installing the unit? I also noticed Bluetooth & mobile hot spot does not get along as they both won't stay connected at the same time. The unit is very nice, but not being able to get the sound from the various other apps & things especially navigation is a bit frustrating. I see no way to access android auto either, is there a certain app to download & process for that to work? Sorry for my lack of understanding & knowledge regarding the (aux). If I got that working, that would solve all of my issues.

It works very well. Conversations are clear. You're still using the original factory mic and speakers for this. Yes, the screen is very bright during the day. I've had no issues reading it.

Thanks for the advice. Just spent the last two hours tinkering with this head unit. I finally got sound from the head unit, but only when using the original CUE interface. When playing pre-installed music/video files from the head unit, you can see the video or watch the music play but still no sound from the head unit itself. I wonder if the speaker that came with the head unit is bad? or the audio technician that installed the head unit for me mixed some wires up or something?

Yes I did. Still didn't work. I watched another KZbin video, in which the guy troubleshoots no sound on Tesla style radios. The guy says hit the console icon, then go in to amp volume, then increase the amp volume. Unfortunately, when I touch the console icon, it takes me back to the original CUE interface. I've contacted tech support again to see if they can give me some advice on resolving this issue. Unfortunately, tech support is in China so it takes forever to get a response. Overall, this is a nice head unit, but without sound coming from the Tesla radio itself I've wasted $500 and time playing around with this thing. Thanks for your help

I didn't, but the guy I sold the Caddy to, his technician figured it out. Apparently, whoever installed my Tesla-style radio crossed a few wires.

How do you keep the Bluetooth music playing while switching to home where the AC controls are? When ever I am listening to music with Bluetooth from my phone and switch the screen to home on the Tesla stereo, it turns off my music. Not sure if there is a work around?

Which app do you use on your phone to listen to music? Can you download the app directly to the Touch screen system in the car, log into your acct from there and listen directly through the Touch screen system and not your phone? Probably have to use mobile hot spot from your phone to keep internet connected.

I appreciate you making this video. I just bought a 2019 XTS. I thought about putting this in it. My question is does the system update itself when new software becomes available? For instance to repair that lag in the start up. And since you posted this video has anything else came up that annoyed you?

There is a version of this unit that is "fast booting". It's about $200 more. The software does NOT auto-update. You have to manually update using a USB device. Otherwise, nothing has annoyed me, if anything I get a few more features that the base system didn't have.

One question. I have the ATS-V coupe which has the bose system with 10" sub that sounds glorious. What did your system sound like after removal of the bose unit?

I didn't remove the Bose unit. I removed the CUE system. That has NOTHING to do with the Bose unit. The stereo and speakers are untouched. This is just a different way to interface with the existing equipment. There is NO change in sound.

I’m placing an order for this system from alibaba for my 2014 ATS. I’m concerned about 2 things: 1) I read a comment in the unboxing/installation video about someone else that couldn’t get sound. In ur response, u mentioned a “silver box”. However I didn’t see that silver box in ur video. Can you elaborate? 2) What do you mean when you say it play through the auxiliary? Is there an external cable that connects to the auxiliary input in the armrest? I hope not bc that would look tacky for such a classy unit. 3) the alibaba rep offered free Apple CarPlay adapter if I choose to purchase the 6.0 instead of the 8.1 version. They look identical, do you know the difference? If it’s only a difference in GIGS, what does that affect? I know I asked enough for the whole forum but thank you in advance for ur help!

1. I had to contact the company...they forgot my silver box. 2. I mean what I stated, sound comes from cable and yes there is an external cable to the AUX input in the armrest. 3. I do not. I don't use Apple CarPlay

JHawk1977 can you speak to the contrast on the head unit. I have purchased a PX6 for my Cadillac CTS and it is great. My only concern is the how to adjust the contrast so the unit does not get appear washed out during daylight hours. Please help.

Hmmm, I cannot. I've never had that issue. It should adjust automatically as light hits it. Brighter in the day and dimmer at night. It should be set for that right out of the box.

I have no sound going through the car speakers from the Tesla style head unit, except when playing the factory CD player. Did you have a NO SOUND issue after installing your Tesla head unit? I installed one in my 2013 XTS Platinum as we and sound comes out with no problem. Make sure to plug the 3.5 mm into the armrest console AUX.

Unfortunately, I don't think this will work. I can't say for sure, but it seems like you'd be pulling a lot more out of your dash to install this. I also don't know if you'd have same wiring harnesses.

Went to Alibaba and found the unit for my mustang. It is described as "Vertical screen tesla style 12.1inch android car dvd player with gps navigation for Ford Mustang 2010-2014". Where is the dvd player on the unit? Will order, just would like to listen to my CDs and maybe watch movies. Also, Rhino recommends purchasing the additional gps radio antenna and stated that the WIFI wasn't the right obdii adapter that use of blue tooth obd adapter was recommended (wireless). Suggestions? Resurrecting an old video for a question- what is the method you use to get the unit internet access? My main concern is ease of use. For a different car with an android head unit, when I turn on my car, the head unit auto connects to my phone using zlink or something and all is well. Basically, I don't have to take my phone out of my pocket for things like Pandora and Google Maps online to work. How does this thing work to get its onboard apps connected to the internet?

You can switch songs using steering wheel controls or voice, but you cannot control the screen. You have to touch the screen for responses.

Hi. You noted that you need to use torque with WIFI and not bluetooth. Have you tried to use bluetooth and it didnt work or you assumed the bluetooth stack wasnt up to it :-) ?

You cannot use Bluetooth to connect to the OBDII. I tried with 2 different units. Neither worked. Once I used a WiFi unit, worked in seconds.

No it won’t, it’s a head unit. Now any problems cause by the unit or problems with the unit it’s self won’t be covered by factory warranty. So no your warranty won’t be void.

The head unit is plug n play, but not compatible with the factory camera. You must purchase a camera separately and you have to run wires to it and to a backup light signal. Even then, the camera is considered plug n play, because that's all you're doing...plug it into the head unit and it works (plays).

The links provided should help with everything you need for installation. Best Buy will most likely do the install if you prefer. You'd have to ask them. Some stores may not b/c you didn't buy from them. But a local car stereo installer would most likely do the work.

No. It's removed when you remove the radio system. It no longer exists. You have a giant screen now.

Yes, it will still work and will still connect to your current system. You just need to do the work of installing everything. See my other video on installation.

I just installed one in my ATS non cue system. I don't get a radio icon anywhere. Did you have to download or activate the radio?

No need to download anything. You should have a radio icon at the top of the screen or you can use the steering wheel controls to adjust the source.

@@jhawk1977 Thanks for the quick response. I downloaded the launcher you mentioned and it gives me the radio icon. However, the only radio I can seem to connect to is via internet. Otherwise, from the steering wheel I can select FM and use the original factory tuner, but not from the Tesla radio. Mine was the base model. Not sure if that is an issue?

@@bclark2565 it could be related to the fact that you installed in a base model. Not sure. You should've gotten a smallish, silver metal box in the package. That's the tuner that you install along with the head unit. Did you get/install that?

It's not perfect, but: 1. It looks cool, better than stock 2. Replacing the CUE is inevitable at over $400 3. It still works and is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

There's a newer one called PX6 -Six Core Tesla Screen that integrates with the cue system. Its also updated with Android 9 fast boot. Make sure you plug that micro USB cable to show the normal cue interface through it.
