You are wrong, it’s basically here already. I use FSD on my Tesla and it’s amazing. The technology takes me from ‘A to B’ with no interventions and uses freeways and city streets to do it. Waymo has to have everything mapped out, and can’t use freeways.

I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. They've been testing on freeways with safety drivers for years. Unlike Tesla Waymo, it isn't going to offer highway driving until it's just as safe as their city driving

Waymo have crippled themselves by a) relying on LiDAR and b) geofencing their cars. Tesla has a system that comes standard with all their cars for way less money that performs exponentially better in most regions, purely because of the fact that Waymo doesn’t work in most regions and even if they did, they can’t afford to scale. They’re also creating a computer vision/learning system that has practical uses beyond FSD. So, once they crack FSD, not only will they crush their Robotaxi competitors, they’re be almost ready to ship fully functional autonomous robots. That is the bet.

Tesla is not even up to geofenced capability yet. And what you say about lidar is a very generous view to Tesla’s approach. Lidar costs more but it is much cheaper than years ago. Most companies continue to see value in having a lidar system and the only autonomous cars on the road have lidar. You dismiss the value of it too easily as far as I’m concerned.

Why would a bird care about running when it can fly? Waymo isn't choosing to be limited to certain areas. It's limited to certain areas because they don't have a generalised approach like Tesla does. Once FSD is unleashed it will work pretty much anywhere. Which, for a taxi service is crucial. Anyone who is geofenced will be locked out of a massive part of the market and no one is going to want to use your service if it can't get you to where you need to go. 'Lidar costs more but it is much cheaper than years ago.' LiDar costs more money, correct. Cheaper doesn't mean cheap however and when it comes to bringing a product to market, if you can offer a cheaper trip, customers will not pay more money for the same service, obviously.. In this regard, Tesla has the upper hand because it can sell its service for less money while still making a profit. This is very VERY basic economics. 'Most companies continue to see value in having a lidar system and the only autonomous cars on the road have lidar.' This is not true. MobilEye has just dropped their LiDar system in favour of a vision approach (the same as Tesla). They have realised LiDar will only take them so far down a dead end before they have to turn around and go back back, in favour of the path they need to be on which is the path of real world AI using vision / machine learning. Others will follow but it seems Waymo has chosen to split their resources going down both paths simultaneously. This will not only be a massive waste of money in the long run, it will set them further and further behind until they admit defeat and end up committing to the winning strategy which is vision only. Again, this isn't just Elon's view. MobilEye has just made the same realisation. You have fallen for the crutch as far as I'm concerned. It's a bit like riding a bike with stabilisers, thinking you're improving, only to find out that when you take them off, you've been working on solving the wrong problem. You should have been trying to work on your balance, not how to push the pedals. You'll see soon enough though when Tesla comes flying past without their hands on the handle bars, giving you the middle finger.

Waymo is losing $1B per quarter because it costs to map the area with tokenized high-definition maps and staff people to watch the cars. If Waymo hasn't figured out how to turn a profit by the time Tesla hits the market they will fold within a year. Remember Tesla does not have to buy cars and then re-engineer them to use fancy sensors. The cars will just pop off their normal production lines. No need for a $100-K or more additional retrofit.
