Her parents are to blame, the mother making excuses for the drunk father and leaving the hives to Tess who did her best. Her mother is to blame for pimping her out to rich relatives without warning her of the wiles of men. Alec is to blame for taking her innocence when he was worldly enough to know how it would ruin her life. Angel is to blame for not telling his story until after the wedding but faulting her for not telling him before. He is at fault for expecting forgiveness for 48 hours of voluntary debauchery but not forgiving her for 15 minutes of involuntary and confused abuse. She bore the babe then was demeaned by her father, already guilty for his part in starting the downhill destruction of Tess, when she was crushed by her dying babe. No comfort from her mother. Everyone is guilty but Tess but she has to bear all the guilt. She blames herself. Angel was worst because he had the wisdom to see his sin was far worse and her small sin of not fighting off Alec, not that she was able, because she was unsure of what to do. Her goal was always to do the right and moral thing. Then Angel didn't return as he promised, didn't answer her letters and Alec selfishly manipulated her with lies leaving her in the chasm between. And in the end she receives the ultimate punishment for killing Alec, accepting and paying for everyone's sin and blame. Now we are in a period of a few women speaking up about sexual abuse from men who, like Alec, felt entitled to use women. That is good but millions more need to speak up and don't because men still feel entitled to use women's bodies to pleasure their own. Is this natural for our species?

The book implies that she had become Alec's mistress after he took advantage of her in the woods, and this lasted several weeks before she decided to return home.

Thank you for this. As a survivor of repeated sexual violence, I felt seen today. Especially in light of the Atlanta murders of Asian American women this last week (I identify as Asian American), I couldn't help but see the 15-year-old me being the "temptation" that the sheriff said the killer had to eliminate. Rape culture, misogyny, and patriarchy (and in this case the oversexualization of Asian women) is still very much alive and well.

I hate Angel Clare; often he seems worse than Alec for hurting Tess so badly and being such a moralising bastard. She's ovvie better than both these men put together and I love that Hardy knows this

I prefer the 2008 version, i think Gemma captures a more fiery nature in Tess than the 1998 version. I love how we really get the sense of strength and passion within Tess. i think without this Tess would have fallen apart. But i just wished she didn't have to die. i think she is one of the best heroines in literature!!!

The thing is with this scene there is so much emotion revealing itself which is what this version lacks imo. The 1998 portrays the scene how I had imagined it when reading the novel.

I think both Gemma and Justine are great actresses! But I think Justine acts the Tess I know from Hardy better than Gemma. This scene should be a very intense moment, feelings that can't be expressed, that need to be surpressed. But it's not really Gemma's fault that this scene is cut so short and with those cheesy words, she played the Tess as it was written in the script and does that very well. Blame the script! Though I think she couldn't have played the other Version, that needed Justine!

Gemma is wonderful here, but the dialogue is too different from the book - "I'm already dead", "Goodbye my love" never passed Tess's lips in the book or in the other two film versions. This scene was cut short, and Eddie Redmayne just stood there looking dumbfounded - it really feels like Gemma did most of the work - and I didn't buy the romance between Tess and Angel in this one.

She is supposed to be more in a trance. She's definitely not "hypnotized-seeming". Justine Waddell communicated her hypnotized look and actions far more accurately.

i will never understand why she just does not say "im his creature but if you love me still I will leave with you" and then gee i dont know just walk out of the house? But then it would not be this wonderful sad romatic story that it is....so there you have it. I really like this version - but I also love the 1998 version - they both have good and bad points - so I watch them both :D

@SassoonOwen I wholeheartedly agree. Especially in this scene, Justine did a tremendous job. Gemma was good, but her Tess is more of a naive and docile country girl and somehow just ends up being a martyr. Justine's on the other hand is a victim, but she never plays the martyr card. She's spirited and has character, and is not so easily submitted. One pities her but at the same time admiring her, if that makes any sense.

@FloralSilk I agree, Alec is indeed a piece of crap, but from what i gathered in the book she went back because Alec used her family against her and made her feel guilty, and as if it was her only choice to go back to him so that he would take care of her family who she felt responsible for :( it truly is a tragedy

I really liked this version, but this scene simply didn't have the power and dynamic of the 1998 version. I don't know, I think the acting was a bit bland, there simply wasn't enough emotion. But other than that, I really liked this version like I said.

To me the 98 version, the actors seem like they are acting like the characters, where in the 2008 version the actors are living the lives of the characters, they became them. The 98 version makes me feel like I'm watching a play

Her expression is frozen in her. It's been repressed in this simple woman who doesn't know how the world works. If she was expressive the whole story would be different. She would fight back and rebel. But she accepts because of her mental simplicity and morals.

Angel was two faced, vain and shallow . I dont approve of rape but at least Alec really did care and love her . In one version i saw he asked Tess to marry him and was so upset to hear about his baby . He would have raised their baby and cared for Tess , unlike Angel .

I have watched every version of this and the only one that captures Tess is Nastassia Kinski. Even when she has " been round the block a few times" she still looks innocent whereas Gemma Arterton always sounds like she has been round the block a few times already. Too modern, too experienced, too 21st century. Kinski is straight out of Dorset circa 18 hundred whatever and never loses that naivete.
