If I had to pick a favourite track it would have to be Sacrifice. What a way to close the album!

Great review! I like how you explain the atmosphere and feel of the music in more abstract terms. Will be interesting to go back and listen to your review again, after hearing the album. I have no doubt it's going to be their best release, I've followed the band and the singer in particular on his Twitch channel (DMTesseract) where he has been singing live a couple of times a month the past four years. He has grown and developed immensely, such a joy to watch. I adore this band, such nice, generous people and very down to earth. Three days left until release day!! Thanks for this review!

IMO, this album is objectively their greatest album, the rest comes down to taste and what earlier releases mean for the listener. I have followed this band since 2011. The reason this album is their best ultimately comes down to the vocal performance, composition and production. The band has always had skill, but how that skill is utilised in War of Being is insanely good. Furthermore, it has the technical and progressive aspects of One and Altered Stated, the emotional depth and richness of sound of Polaris, with the compositional refinement of Sonder. Seriously, the sound is levels ahead of everything they have ever done.

I have wanted to like Tesseract from their first album. The problems I've had with them since then haven't gone away. 1) overproduced and too clean. Attempting to mimic the 'clean Tool sound' but they do not have the darkness or power that Tool have - and that makes the music sound weak since now you're not only NOT a dark band but you sound too clean 2) too many up and down lulls with pretty vocals. No logic to some of these drops. It builds tension then they suddenly want to have a pretty ballet. This album seems to be written around the vocals and not that the vocals are written to the music. So I keep getting the impression the words don't fit the music in places, and the guitarist doesn't seem to know how to continue driving this music forward so that the vocals don't halt the momentum. 3) some unnecessary soft-rock stylised music techniques applied such as vocal effects that I think rob it of an organic feel. 4) the drummer is too tame. I think he's a real weakness to driving the music but it's just not exciting at times. imagine Ken Schalk at the drums? Mike Smith? It will speak the anger that the vocalist cannot. Probably their best album, but the issues with it tell me they have a mediocre producer and they themselves are being overly cautious with their approach.

Am I the only one that thinks that this album is awesome but the mix is off? Idk what it is but it kind of sounds muddy compared to some of earlier albums
