Test 2d look in Blender

A Rig Test for the RRR animation sequence. We are Aiming for the 2d look for this little guy to combine it with other 2d characters. Made with Blender Grease pencil. Grease pencil modifier work pretty well with the mesh, you have a lot of control to choose with the outline :)

We use the Lineart modifier and We really have to think about the limitation of the 2d animation what would they not do, what do they cheat!

To add to what Plastiek said; 2D animation is very limited to what it can do, this is not so say it's subpar though. It's limited because you have far too much control over what happens on a 2D plane. Bodies and such are far more "Liquid" if that makes sense, it's the same reason why claymation works really well. The problem with typical 3D rigs and CG for animation is that it's rigid, solid and maintains shape regardless of the angle. A problem-example of this would be camera parallax. A camera captures the image as a cone from it's origin (the "Lens") which causes a kind of distortion to obejects. A really wide FOV amplifies this effect if you're curious what it looks like. In 2D, this doesn't happen on it's own. You have to animate around it to get the same effect. I'd also throw in the importance of shading, more so the lack of it. The typical cartoon-shader method in blender doesn't actually cel-shade like traditional 2D animation does. The most cartoon-y look would be to have no shading at all but you could get away with one level of cel-shading. When you use the standard method, it will shade logically because it's entirely calculated by a logarithm. For 2D cartoons, the shading is artistic. It follows some real-world logic but not to the level like a computer. Animators have in many clevers ways cheated around these shortcomings. A good test/experiment for yourself would be to make something with a bright white shade-less material, bright white background and a black line-art modifier.

This is amazing! The shader is more amazing than other toon shaders. You can see that this is simply not black and white cel shading, there's that light gradient on top of the shadow. So awesome.

Fantastic work, my friend. You know, I've been doing my animations in Adobe Animate. I ain't a fan of 3D, man, I'm all about that 2D vibe. I'm from the Mario Bros. era, you know what I mean? So, I've been thinking of switching over to Blender and getting that 2D look, but with the freedom to play around in 3D while still keeping that traditional 2D feel.

We remove all the 3d shading stuff and use layering of the gradient node to fake the light and shadow by hand that will give you much more control than just using the 3d light :)
