The classic driving game from Accolade! One of my favourites, especially with its cool soundtrack.

For me personally (and I guess for some other kids) , this was not so much a game. It was a window into the future. C-64 had tons of 2D games, some of them great. But these 3D games ... they were something else. They did not run well, and we all subconsciously knew are poor 8-bit machine was too weak. But suddenly, you had a glimpse what would tomorrow bring ... You were not toying with some silly sprites, now you are in the game, virtual reality and all that stuff ...

Broke a few C64 C-1342 joysticks playing this. Usually in the Ferrari. Lol good times. 80s forever.
@AchtungBaby772 ай бұрын
That is surprising, because there's barely any steering in this game to really work and break a joystick 😅

Wow. I remember how AMAZING these graphics were at the time. Now I realize my imagination was filling in a lot of blanks. haha

Not only looked real, but played like a simulator, with a proper manual stick that let you could choose exactly what gear leave the car in, and no sequential nonsense. Visually speaking I can say the same for Need for Speed (which, by the way, when it came out I thought it was a Test Drive sequel), it looked 100% real at the times. When I saw it on KZbin years later I could not believe it was actually so "rough".

Same...Although C64 could create better 3D looking graphics than the Nintendo. I remember playing Micro League Wrestling, and thinking it looked like a real match since it was digitized. Well I liked untill My mom tore the floppy disk in half for not doing my chores😂
@aleksazunjic9672Ай бұрын
They were amazing because it was something totally different ... No 2D, no tiny sprites to toy with them, you are now in the game. Glimpse into future.

Accolade was one of the best companies for c64. Very professional looking logo and box art in all their games a shame they went out of businesses

They were also just a great company in general. I started having problems with my Test Drive disc loading and wrote them a letter about it. They actually sent me a new disc.

@@manicscarecrow3011 Alan Miller was a decent businessman. However, as time went on, game budgets got larger and larger, and the quality of their sequels started to go downhill. Also, there was a very long drawn out lawsuit between them and Sega over the reverse engineering of the Sega Genesis, and the legal costs led to serious net losses, leading the board of directors to oust Alan Miller. After Alan Miller left, the CEO position was a revolving door. With no real leadership and venture capitalists wanting out, Infogrames bought out Accolade so they would have a North American publishing arm.

I was so frustrated by this game. The concept so ambitious - a simulator, not an action game, and subtle music, but the time just wasnt right. And one day, Need For Speed came out on 3DO, it was basically the exact game, even the mocking comments after the race -- the time had come where it worked out. Test drive is always in my heart though. Wow.

C64 was several years ahead of all the more respected, "serious" computers at the time in terms of audio. Forgot that this had a speech clip- in 1987!! Games for IBM type machines wouldn't be able to talk until about a decade later, & then only with special add-on disks.

@@bjenkins803 Yea I know. It's not cheap. Most sellers want big bucks. Commadore is supposedly rereleasing a new system called C64 maxi. Shortly it even has a working keyboard. A seller on ebay had one but you have to buy a US adapter plug fitting in order to use it. Commadore says you can download any game on a USB port and plug it in to the maxi and play it. Hopefully the US version Maxi will release soon.

(Commodore mußte gehen pc. Von weit oben angeordnetes.) Amiga & Commodore. Schade drum. (Bis 95 konnte kein PC mithalten. Wüßte gerne was WIRKLICH GESCHEHEN IST.) "Was willst du mit nem PC." War normal bis 95. Jedenfalls für Spieler + dann war PC + :( (Der Amiga 500. Heute noch wundervoll. Viele Spiele über snes.) PP Hammer & Co ✌🏻👍🏻 (Ein Branche wurde geopfert.) Tragisch (Jedes premium game besser snes.) Das war BILL GUTES. Ein Hurensohn. (Und es Jump and Runs Amiga 500 unverständlich snes erfolge feierte.) Erinnert auch an Sega Saturn. Gezwungen zu Playstation. Besser zu Schrott. Gn8
