I guess it's not the popular opinion but for hot pressed paper this sketchbook is quite good in my opinion. I feel like people don't consider it in the most accurate context (hot pressed vs. cold pressed) but I'd take this sketchbook over a hahnemuhle cellulose book any day. You just have to go easy on the water (or learn to work with and embrace the blooms, so hard to do!). I do definitely believe it's 100% cotton but perhaps the sizing is more of the issue rather than the cotton content, I think it's better than Arches hot pressed paper too, but I think the Fabriano Classico 5 would be my top choice for smooth paper and it's only 50% cotton. And yes, Paul Rubens definitely disperses more than White Nights, it's the one main reason I just don't enjoy using White Nights no matter how much I want to love it.

Nice insight. I would never have tried Paul Rubens since I buy art materials from my local art shop and they do not carry it, but now you made me curious. I love the Fabriano 5 paper as well. I like to make my own sketchbooks and I had this paper once. I loved it. I also love Fabriano Artistico, but it's not white enough and my local shop only carries the natural white

I'm so with you on this! I bought a A4 one, and I was so positively surprised by the quality of paper thatI went on to buy another one. I prefer this over my Hahnemuhle one, and it's galaxies better than the Stillman and Burn I have. Honestly, sometimes i even prefer it over the Fabriano artistico CP.

I’ve been reserved about using hot press paper since I have zero experience with it and I’m so new to watercolor. Watching this video makes me very curious and want to try it out 😅 I’ve never tried Paul Reuben products. Definitely have seen them on Aliexpress. Agree the colors definitely looks very vibrant!

I think the 100% cotton paper is what’s making the wet-on-wet enjoyable. I recently switched over to cotton paper and it’s amazing for wet techniques

So true. From hating my finishes (Canson cellulose) to loving them on 100% cotton. Treated myself to a sheet of Arches. Oh my! 😍😍 I also have the legion (recommended by Jenna Rainey, it’s ok) and fluid 100%. But that Arches is ..chef’s kiss.

@@Its_Jess00 oh cool. Will try Fabriano! I know Teoh uses it too and he likes it. My local art store sells sheets of both. I could never ever justify a block of Arches 😱so I bought a single sheet and cut it up into mini sheets😛

Thanks for the review. When I got this sketchbook last year I really didn't enjoy painting in it. It was my error though. I was just a beginner and had only ever painted on cold press paper and had quite a shock at how different the hot pressed paper is. I'm sure the book is great for someone who likes hotpressed paper though. The Paul Rubens paints are great though.

Enjoyed watching you check out the new paints and sketchbook. You definitely have a fan who loves your work! Just got a new watercolor sketch book but will most likely get that Rubens one as well. Hot press is my favorite to paint on. Those colors are gorgeous! Picked up some tips watching your sunset demo. And I now make my windows black and lean into shadows, does make a big difference. I started off with the 12 pan paul ruben set and it's still my go to if i want to do a limited pallete travel setup or if bag space is a bit limited.

You can't beat the palette. It's artist quality, almost entirely lightfast (other than the opera pink which we all know is an issue.. I have the 48 set not sure if the opera is in this one), the palette itself is one of the nicest I've ever bought at any price level.. yeah, it's pink but you could always paint it if it really bugs you.. and the price is outstanding. The only downside is you can't buy the paints individually to refill, at least not in the US. They have started selling tube sets on Amazon but you have to buy the entire thing.

I’ve seen people not liking these paints but I personally really like both the pan sets i have and the tube sets. They’re not the most fancy paints but i find myself grabbing them all the time.

It really is 100% cotton paper. I have PR watercolour pads and sketchbooks both, and two coloursets (12). They are very good products!

I bought the sketchbook (black version 😁) for Inktober last year but really didn’t like it. The inkpens felt very scratchy as it was so much rougher than other hot pressed paper. It also felt different to other cotton paper… I do use it for swatching and loose sketches with lots of water and it’s ok for that, but I wouldn’t buy it again. Your door looks lovely so it seems that it works for you.

I think you're right in that it doesn't feel like other 100% cotton paper - as a few others have mentioned, perhaps its to do with the sizing. I don't know an awful lot about paper. For these kinds of watercolour sketches though, it did do the job.

I am a newbie when it comes to fountain pens and urban sketching... I have no clue about any of the fountain pen and waterproof ink... I have clicked on your link for where you get yours and everything.. But it has been sold out each time i have went back and looked at it... Tara, did you notice that the French Ultramarine, violet, and permanent violet have a subtle shimmer/sparkle to them? I don't know much about watercolor pigments, so don't know if that is normal or not, but it was definitely noticeable to me. Those were the only colors that I noticed it in. (Same pink container, 24 color set. ) Just curious....

If you put the label on the bottom of the pan you can pop them back in no problem and you have instant labels on the pan for color/pigment.
