I can't decide between these two. There are things about each one that I like in pretty equal measure.

Hi Taria. Between the two sketches, I like the abstract feel of the pencil and watercolor drawing - it drives my imagination rather than defines an image which I think the ink and water color drawing does. I am a beginning less-than-amateur want to be Urban Sketcher and I find I gravitate to pen and ink with less interest in using pencil alone. Your demonstration is especially helpful for my journey because I now see how inking leans toward strong definition compared to pencil, and how I can make better decisions which to use for the desired result. THANKS!

Hello Taria, your videos are great relaxing fun still waiting on my art to be retrieved from storage so I can try out this approach, oh the arch above a door is called a lintel , thought I'd google it since I was getting such joy from your videos. keep up the beautiful work.

I like the ink. You are right in how lovely the arch is in the first - but overall I like the ink style
@dianecharest83652 жыл бұрын
I like the second one also.

I've just discovered the absolute joy of a 0.3mm mechanical pencil (Pentel) with 2B lead. I don't need ink - well not so much :-) You need just the right touch so you get a good dark line without breaking the lead but you soon get used to it. It's a dream.

I agree, I really love the delicacy of the arch in the first one... but idk.. I just love the boldness of ink. The second one is my favorite.

I am usually working in a pocket-size sketchbook, so I have noticed that I like ink lines for a bit more emphasis in the small size. I like both of yours.

Primsacolor makes (made) these pencils called Premier Black. The color was deep and smooth as ink with the quality of pencil. I mean it didn’t smudge very easily, even with a blend stick. It was permanent. I think it was oil based, or at least wax. The only problem I had with these pencils was that, well, the leads had the structural integrity of smoke. Sharpening these things was a nightmare. The leads would snap in a pencil sharpener, and if the pencil was not handled with the gentleness and care one would afford a baby anything, the leads would crack in the wood.

Yes, I think I'm with you on that, it just gives a little more sharpness I think

I may be repeating someone else's post, but if you let the watercolor dry more (in my experience) the white gel pens are better & Pentel Polymer leads don't run under watercolor usually. And yes, I use pencil, then do ink over before watercolor, the pencil adds another layer of shading.

Noodler's Ink has several waterproof inks. I of course use a black, but also a gray that creates a more subtle pairing with watercolor.

I love your sketches and this exercise to compare the two techniques! Using only the pencil to make some parts of the sketch lighter is a great idea 😊

Thanks Roberta - glad you enjoyed watching :) This experiment has definitely given me ideas as to how to combine the use of pencil, ink and watercolour....

I love them both. I agree with you about the arch and love the walls on the pencil side. I have wondered about using pen vs pencil. I did a hydrangea in pencil and didn't get the dark depths in between the petals they way I did with pen. So it depends on the subject. Great video thanks!

I like the pen best

I too have experimented with this theory and love the pencil look. Stephanie Bower for me is the prime example of this and love her work. I too have terrible problems with white gel pens..they all seem to dry up when hardly used. Bx

I like both sketches. I would have added more watercolor to the pencil sketch as I tend to do very strong coloring in my watercolor paintings. Thanks for sharing your traveling experiences. I do also like painting Mexican doors because of the vivid coloring!

I like the ink. For some reason I feel safe with it and I like how one can do accents with a pen.

Btw those white ink Gelly roll pens are great but they do get to be a bit of a pain. In my experience I’ll take a lighter to the tip for just a second.. literally, just a second, and activate the ink again. I guess the pigment causes the tip to get dry 🤷

Paul Wang's favourite is a soft 6B Blackwing pencil. He also often uses water-soluble pencils... and lately he's loving Faber-Castell watercolour pencils. They are his favourites on his Play-Lab sessions. Good to see your experimentation. My art supply wishlist is getting longer with every one of your videos, riggers I only have one, never used, ha :) I'm on the fence, because each sketch has its charms. I've been loving using the Sailor fude nib thanks to you... but will look to use a limited palette of watercolour pencils too. They don't take up much 'real estate' so handy. I can see graphite (over ink) has its use for us intimidated newbies, because.... Erase! I've put the escoda brushes on my Christmas list... hope the hubby has noticed my hints, lol. Yes, bigger for walls, but not practical sizes for urban sketches. I guess that's why I haven't bought an Ian Fennelly course yet. I love his work and tutor personality, but it's not small scale because he works in A3 and that translates differently when considering detail (my largest is A4!) To sum, great experiment. And I loved both outcomes. Go figure... Art is not a vanilla flavour that fits all :) It truly is about play and finding our favourite tools by experimenting. Hubby loves coffee., I love tea! Ha ha. I'm eyeing up a couple of riggers now for future fun :)

Ah I bought a few Faber Castell wc pencils when I bought the set of Lyra wc pencils. I bought them loose though as they didn't have a small set. So I only have a blue, some browns and greens so I didnt want to review them yet until I have a bigger spread of colours. However, from swatching them and using them a little, they seem AMAZING....like much better than others I have tried so I'm excited to get some more. I may wait and get some in the UK as they're cheaper there than in South Africa. I'll probably just get a 12 set though. It will keep it in line with the other pencils I have tried out so far. I like to be as minimal as possible with art supplies as I have seen first hand how out of control it can get! But with having the youtube channel now and wanting to test things for videos and experiment my collection is growing larger and larger (and is spread between 2 countries). I'm excited to be reunited with my Sailor Fide fountain pen when I get back to the the UK, I hope its not gunked up with ink and is still usable :/ A4 is also my largest format. I have an A3 pad here that a friend gave to me....but...also you have to use alot of paint to cover that much surface area so I wonder if A3 is even that sensible to use anyway? (Unless your Ian Fennelly)!

@@tarias_sketchy_adventures Glad you're loving FC watercolor pencils. Look forward to comparisons when you get to that stage. Though I can't see myself switching brands :) Hope your Sailor Fude runs smoothly on your return, too. Forgot to say, Paul Wang uses a spray fixative over his 6B pencil drawings, so not ideal lugging an aerosol around on location with limited supplies. Still, may try my softer pencils while we have to stay at home because they add more tones and darks to sketches. Totally agree, A3 gets crazy expensive!

I like both of them, but when I paint watercolor, I use pencil, then when the painting is dry, I will go over some of the lines with ink....good self-challenge!!!

I think I like the sharpness of using the pen, although I agree I like the softness of the wall in #1. I would be happy with either one if they were mine. I also have trouble with the white pens. I have tried so many different ones and still not found one I really like or one that works consistently. I like the way you do 2 pictures in different styles and I have also started experimenting doing that too. I find I learn a lot that way. However, I am a much slower painter than you and sometimes break it up into 2 different days. As you said, I learn a lot from doing the first one, so the second one is quicker and often has more details that I later realise I missed in the first go round. I like the way you talk so much and I learn a lot from listening to you work through your process and your views on it as you go along.
@tarias_sketchy_adventures3 жыл бұрын
I'm so happy you have started experimenting with doing 2 pictures too - I'm learning so much from doing this. I think my first video with the 2 houses, I did those on 2 different days. And I picked the doors for this video deliberately so I could do them a bit quicker. I had to do the video in one afternoon as I was going on holiday the next day! I wouldn't worry about speed. Just have fun with it. The only time I concern myself with speed is if I'm sketching on location and have limited time. But when I'm home, I take my time....it takes as long as it takes. I'm so happy to hear you're enjoying the videos and they're providing you some value :)
