@MatthewWeiler19847 жыл бұрын
+India Kilo If the mark had checked the VIN number, he would certainly have detected the scam. The scammers obviously had the mark sign the paperwork for the crappy car and it's VIN would differ from the nice car. This way, even if the mark finds the scammers, he was given the car for which he signed the paperwork.

The theory being once you have the props it's just buying the shitty car each time to deduct from the cost. Paperwork's not fake it goes with the shitty car, replacement show plates you can get for £10+. Do it ten times you've easily cleared £10k. Only works on idiots though as first rule of buying a car is meet at the address of the keeper, not in some pub.

@MatthewWeiler19847 жыл бұрын
+Ben Bangert The paperwork wouldn't have to be fake. The mark just signed the paperwork for the crappy car. The good car just temporarily had the crappy cars license plates. If a person buying a car doesn't check that the VIN number matches the documents, that would be a huge mistake. As for the cost of this scam being so large, well they could sell the nice car after the scam and they may already have a van, or at least access to one (family, work).

azertyuiop7893 He paid 1800, not 18000. thats $450 per person. Also, they had to buy the car at its actual price, which is more than 1800, so there really isn't a profit here at all unless they return the car.
@jorensk_fpv10 жыл бұрын
azertyuiop7893 They had to buy fake plates, the rusty same version of the car, even if they paid 400 for both of those, they had to be atleast 3 people (seller, fancycar driver/pusher, van driver), in the end for multiple days(Still had to buy the rusty car) work they each get like 450 or so pounds, which is not really that bad, but keep in mind it is a huge risk if they get caught. They are scamming and have fake plates.
@azertyuiop789310 жыл бұрын
I didn't hear properly then, i thought it was 18.000 bucks not 1800. 5 years in jail for 400£, that's shit.
@drcool4110 жыл бұрын
azertyuiop7893 if you were actually running the scam you would charge him a decent price for such a sweet car, probably more than even 18,000. The only reason they charged 1800 is so afterwards they could say it's just a joke for tv and did you really expect to get it for so cheap? Also, notice how Jess wears sunglasses the whole time, and no one else in the team ever interacted with the marks. Jess would probably change her hair too and dress differently than she normally would, plus Jess was wearing very high heels so as to change her height significantly. Thanks to all that, it's very unlikely Jess would ever be identified, and no one in her crew would, letting them all get away scot free.

Why not stage an accident during the test drive then demand the mark pay for damages. distract him during a turn while another con gets hit by the car. scare him with threats of phoning the police unless he pays up. You could scam several marks a day. In this scam the mark will surely alert the police who will be on the lookout for the car.
@ljeonjko8 жыл бұрын
+Dave LeBlanc too risky.
@Vincent_Beers8 жыл бұрын
your way won't work all that well. stage an accident? lets assume no one gets accidentally hurt (and they could). the bottom line is the mark is not responsible for the accident anyway. you own the car. the person you are trying to scam can just walk away. the damages to the car are not his responsibility they are either yours as the owner, or the person who hit you. either way, it becomes an insurance claim and not against the mark but against the car owners. if i was driving your car and someone hit me. im walking away, go ahead. call the police. in their version of the scam, it wont matter if the police get called. the buyer got the car that is actually listed on the bill of sale and the registration. he just wasnt smart enough to match the vin numbers prior to signing. he test drove one car and bought a different one.
@DerDudelino7 жыл бұрын

What great about this scam is you don’t have to do the van switch or anything, just part the car where you can’t see it from the window. This is beyond stupid. So you buy 2 cars, 3 if you include the van. And then you sell one overpriced and share the money with the 10 people that helped you. And at the end of the day you sit on your armchair behind your desk rubbing your hands with an evil smile and thinking "HA! I really scammed that guy!" With all that effort you could just have started an own small company.
@JamesGardinerDesigns8 жыл бұрын
+jazztom86 The cars would be stolen, and it would only be 3 people involved. So a lot of profit in it. These are actors not criminals, and criminals do this but obviously in different ways than portrayed on this show. If anything fucked up they'd just fucking rob you of the cash anyways.
@jazztom868 жыл бұрын
+James Gardiner it still makes no sense! If they would be criminals, why bothering with all that effort (you still need to find two identical expensive cars, one in mint condition and one in bad condition) and risks (getting caught while stealing the car/driving around in stolen expensive car - draws a lot of attention)? Just do the insertion, and then rob or pickpocket the guy. So you also avoid splitting the money. Scams like this make sense if you find a way to do it without breaking law. Which I think would be possible in that case - only that it doesn't pay off! So this scam, no matter how you see it, is max effort/risk for minimum gain.
@Vincent_Beers8 жыл бұрын
or you line up several buyers and have several junk cars waiting to rip them all off in different locations. you can get junk cars cheap. the setup may cost money (assuming the hero car is purchased) but... you are also keeping it (getting value from it) and could in theory sell it for real later on to recoup investment. in the mean time you are making money from selling junkers. repeatedly. the targets will even have a hard time reporting the problem because you would be giving them the title to the junk cars you are selling them. meaning the sales are legal. they just werent smart enough to check the vin numbers before signing.
@Vincent_Beers8 жыл бұрын
and they dont need to be identical, just similar. the car cover masks whatever hunk of junk is there.
@jazztom868 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the car needs to be the same model, if you want it to be (kinda) legal, and even then I think in court they'd have a hard time stating their case. Still, with that effort and that investement you could start a business, instead of scamming people... oh... wait.... :D

So 5 people split 1800, not terrible but not great. But they had to invest more than that in the new car, so unless they were gonna buy the car anyway then they're losing money on this "scam" unless they can sell the car back on quickly for what they got it for, and without attracting any attention for selling the exact car that the guy just got scammed with, so he'll be sure to notice it if it shows up on classifieds or eBay. Way too much effort for this to be worth it, no matter the scale.

Because if she does that, she has stolen a car and it's now a hot potato. The way she (they) did it, IF the registration they left on the clunker is the correct one for that vehicle, then she did indeed sell him the correct car. Their opinions and recollections of its condition simply vary, and it's her word against his. I agree that it's an awful lot of trouble and risk for a rather small return.
