I was fortunate enough to be taken on a ride on an original, restored SdKFZ 251 years ago during an event held at a local collector's in southern Germany. While it was great to experience this thing first-hand, I did instantly understand why soldiers were wearing steel helmets. It's all edges and hard surfaces, you can't really see out when sitting on one of the two benches in the back and the ride over rough terrain is *rather* harsh. Got flipped out of the seat and in the air once or twice and banged my head into the armour plating... :D

Using a blowtorch on and then cold quenching the bridge to remove rust, while it works, it is also how to weaken the bridge sections further, than just the rust (metal cancer) itself.

Razor - i would have thought so too - you're basically annealing the metal. I'm guessing that the effect is minimised on the thicker steel and this technique is not as long or physically demanding as trying to loosen the parts with lubricant and elbow grease!

Its all about weight transfer. 2 guys could lift the weight to hip height, which they did. Getting it up to, and over shoulder height to fit it on the vehicle requires a significant increase in lifting strength. Thus 4 guys were needed. Weightlifters face the same issue. Lifting the weight is the easy part. Getting it over your head is the difficult part.

Well the British call it Pioneer because we could not pronounce sonderkraftfahrzeug😂 it was not used only by pioneers also by motorised Infantry and cavalry units even the Luftwaffe got some units with three point seven Zentimeter anti-aircraft guns

@@beersmurff well it was planned for them but mostly Not in use my Fathers Regiment was equipped with old French Somua halftrucks and other captured equipment the brand new 251/7 went to the Ardennes for the motorised infantry

This show would have been amazing if they'd just concentrated on the restoration of the bridge sections and maybe even the "rusty" 251.
