I'm entering the motoring world rather late in life (I am 27), and I've decided to go for a bike. This one looks rather excellent as a starter so that I can get used to everything and increase my confidence on the road before I boot up to a 650. An excellent review. Very thorough with great recommendations. Thank you for this.

I love the hight on the cbf 125. Picked up a 2010 model last year after retiring the AJS Cadwell. Stylistically I prefer the Cadwell, but the cbf suits my 6ft hight better. To my shame I'm 10year into my CBT riding. Nerves now stopping me nailing the mod2. Once so bad I couldn't find the theory papers so never went out. Funny how you can fail then ride back to the training centre furious with yourself and be told by your instructor "if that was the test you'd have passed" not what you want to hear when your out of pocket . Anyhow, my cbf dispite it's years, still holds the same in speed, but lost a little in mpg.

+Captain Cross I agree. I bought myself a new one to go alongside my Ducati Monster and new Honda CB500X. It's the most fun bike to ride. Just need to accept it for what it is and enjoy it. Great thing too is it looks like a proper motorbike so cars take notice of you and bikers nod. Shame most riders get sucked into thinking they need 100+bhp. Still loads of fun at the lower end of the power scale.

I have this bike and completed just 60 miles since doing my CBT last month . What Do you mean " you can quick shift “ Is that when you don’t pull in the clutch ? Is that up and down the gears .
@MunkehsMotors2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's shifting without using the clutch, good for upshifts, not so much for downshifts. And it is a little challenging on this bike, the gear leaver has a long travel to kit, so it's less flicking you toe up and more lifting your hole bloody leg.
@peterkenworthy92192 жыл бұрын
@@MunkehsMotors I thought quick shifters were added extras or only found on better bikes ,. Say bikes with ABS . I dint think this basic bike would have the ability . Happy to have chosen this bike because my clutch and throttle skills need improvement, .. only been riding a week so can’t grumble ..
@MunkehsMotors2 жыл бұрын
@@peterkenworthy9219 So a 'quick shifter' can be fitted to a bike, and it automatically cuts the throttle when you apply pressure to the gear lever, allow you to change gear without using the clutch. But you can just do this manually on any bike buy apply slight pressure to the gear lever, then closing the throttle and changing up a gear, and then back on the throttle. Once you get the hang of it, its easier than using the clutch. I used it on every up shift. There's plenty of guide videos on KZbin with more info.

It's a good first bike to learn the ropes, and all 125's are as fast as each other. Plus those 0% PCP and VLP offers they have are good, you'll probably only have it for a year or two and then want to get your full licence and trade it in for something a little bigger.

I think I was going on about how with it only being a 125cc engine and not really having any power, there's not really any danger of you accidentally losing control of the bike. For example if you were sitting at the lights holding the revs at 8,000 rpm and then really quickly let the clutch out, all you would do is go forward. Whereas if I were to do the same on my old Speed Triple, the front wheel would come up so quick I'd be on my arse. On big bikes they have the power to wheelie and make the rear tire break traction if you open the throttle to quickly. Whereas on a 125 you can just pin the throttle open and not have any problems (on dry tarmac! You'll still slip in the wet!!!).

Any small bike is a good 1st bike. If it's got a clutch and gears you'll get used to riding a motorbike without getting punished for small mistakes in the same way you would on a big bike. You'll probably drop it a couple of times, so an older bike which already has a couple of scratches wouldn't hurt either.
