My honest opinion and yours may differ. Just took my MSF course on the Street 500. Yes, there's a reason Harley stopped making them. I totally hated the bike. Heavy, hard to maneuver, front brake grabs at low speed, and the seat height is so low that if you are average height, you need to raise your legs, thighs and calf's, from the hips making it very uncomfortable to place feet on the foot pegs, not to mention one peg was constantly stuck in the upright position making it necessary to push down with my foot every time I started off. WD-40 was no help either. Shifting is clunky, no electronics, and the speedometer is this tiny circle you can hardly see the mph for how fast you're going. Compare to the Rebel 500 with digital speedometer. Important because in the MSF course you need to hit certain speeds for a few of the exercises and with the Street you are guessing but with the Rebel it's plain as day how fast you are going and can hit the speeds perfectly. Again if you own it and love it great. I wouldn't ever buy one even it they still made it today.

Totally agree with this. I just took an MSF course on this bike yesterday and didn’t care for it at all. I’m in my 50’s and my hips were killing me after riding this bike all morning.

I love mine. I have a 2017 with 18,150 miles and daily ride to work on the highway. I average 80mph and have a tab performance slip on the k&n replacement filter not the intake and the fp3. Mine runs really good for what it is. It gets an average of 56mpg and i have the cafe solo seat from harley. Good little bike and i ride it hard and i find that it lacks breaking power, has to soft front springs and is about 40-50 lbs over weight. It does handle well and is great in the city traffic which is what is its intended purpose, but it does great on the highway and ive had it to 110 on the speedometer and my gps. I juat need a bigger fairing for it for some wind reduction and its perfect. I do plan on doing the revolution performance 550 big bore kit to it. I have it in the box just need to get it in but i think im going to wait till it needs a rebuild.

It's a smooth engine. It'll do 86 mph stock... so put a huge screen on it and with some decent bags get an instant tour bike.

If you got one for cheap would you consider this a good canvass for a custom bike?

So YES. Any bike can be a good platform but the simplicity and ruggedness of this motorcycle makes it perfect for whatever custom build you can imagine. If you do some research on these custom builds, you'll see most of them use the Street 750 but the 500 it close enough that many of the same ideas can transfer over. In 2015 the Custom Kings Street Contest took place where H-D dealers competed against each other on a Street based custom build. Our service dept had a pretty sweet build. There's a ton I could go into on this topic but summed up is yes, these would be fantastic for a Harley based custom build that you want to stand out.

I have been interested in acquiring one of these motorcycles. I understand that Harley Davidson no longer manufactures them, and as of 2024, they were primarily utilized for instructional purposes, such as obtaining a learner's permit or license. I would be delighted to add one to my collection due to its unique and distinctive characteristics compared to other motorcycles in its class.

Hey there! It's just the turn signal indicators. The Street 500 does not have self canceling signals and sometimes Isaac forgets to cut them off.
