I preferred the sound of the more expensive ones in the first 2 rounds, but in the third I preferred the less expensive one. Given that the price of the more expensive guitar in the third round is mostly due to it's age and scarcity, that makes sense.
@SamiKankaristo
@SamiKankaristo Жыл бұрын
Exact same results for me, except in the last one the difference felt smaller than in the first two. I think there's definitely diminishing returns past 10 grand. With those kinds of prices, it's more about the history of the instrument than the sound. If I played more classical guitar, I'd definitely be tempted to buy a Brune guitar, they've sounded great for the prices they go for.

@@SamiKankaristo There is a collector's market. If the maker is still alive, the prices used will always be less than new, because you can order a new one, and Hill has a workshop with several employees. Fletas is dead, and his guitar was the one played by Sergovia in his later years, so there is appeal. Buyers in this price range are mainly concerned about resale value, and these guitars will only go up. The Hill is a more modern design, though Fletas' designs were also modern, just less so, so that will affect people's preferences.

You guys will appreciate this;, After fingerpicking acustics for 30 years ,the gods rewarded me last month with a Holy Grail, a $100 "japanese Averez" classical guitar at the pawnshop but was really a 1973 Juan Alverez blanco ceder top flamenco worth $5000. the crazy thing is, i could not have picked a better guitar, I never knew how perfect flamenco guitars are for aggresive fingerpicking compared with a classical, the difference is night and day!

@djdaniels00
@djdaniels00 Жыл бұрын
I honestly got all 3 while using my headphones. The big distinguisher for me were the clarity of the harmonics, especially in the mid to lower tones. The less expensive guitars had warm but somewhat muted lower tones, where the higher-end guitars had very pure resonances and just sung very well.

Same, third one was a bit of a troll though, sound holes v not made that one nearly random imo. Clearly sounded boomier/messier but that might just be a trait for those. I sure as hell wouldnt have been able to guess between them with any certainty listening to an album though, except for guitars with additional sound holes.
@charltonpepper5317
@charltonpepper5317 Жыл бұрын
yeahh i got all 3 with headphones and a soundcard lol to me it was in their sustain and decays the more expensive ones always had a more full resonance and the lower end was always more tigher and clear, i remember thinking everytime i picked one that maybe its just my taste , but i also know i have generally expensive taste, held true in this vid LOL also agree with @lemiure elemiur the soundholes threw me off too
@nickcoulter973
@nickcoulter973 Жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. The difference for rd. 3 was quite clear in the sustain after a chord. On the first guitar it sounded like the basses rolled off immediately, throwing them out of balance with the mids and uppers. I'm also thinking the sound ports played a role in causing that to happen.

(No Spoilers) For me, Round 2 was the most difficult, as the others were very clear from the first note, especially the last. I could hear that those strings got to know their guitar and each other for much longer. I feel that Round 2’s lower price guitar was a fantastic option for that price point (think I got lucky in guessing it correctly lol). I was also listening carefully to Brandon’s playability and articulation, as I’d imagine each recording were first takes. Great video, and thank you both for involving the audience so much throughout this mini-series :). Edit: Very interesting to me seeing so many people like the first guitar in Round Three more than the second. I heavily preferred the latter. Just goes to show how we can interpret sound differently, and the color scheme of an instrument's tonality is completely subjective, despite the price.

first set I prefered the slightly cheaper one that sounded more rounded and less strident on the high notes, the other two rounds I went for the more expensive ones, the low tones in the last one were amazing. So the difference could be heard through my very old and small mission speakers (MS-50) powered by an integrated micro sony systme (CMT-BX1) that received the analog signal from a cheap SMSL DAC/headphone amp (SD-793II) in my office with non ideally placed speakers. I mention this beacuse I was really not expecting to be able to hear the difference, I can´t imagine how different these guitars sounded and felt in real life.

So, with the Sound Compression on KZbin, I'm not sure that we'll be able to hear the difference too well. That being said, I'll try hard to guess, cuz I'm Super Amateur! I don't play the guitar, but love the sound of it =P Maybe I'll learn =3 Round 1 - Guitar 1: Warm sound, nice resonance, good presence. Round 1 - Guitar 2: Same warm sounds, but this one's higher notes have a sweetness to them I love the piece you're playing! I think that Guitar 2 is the more expensive one because of the sweeter tones to the higher notes. The first one didn't sound as sweet to my untrained ears XD (Paused at 2:00 to make this prediction) Round 2 - Guitar 1: This guitar has a very sweet sound, Not sure if the thinness of the sound is from the guitar or the music Round 2 - Guitar 2: I love this guitar, the sound is very full, in comparison to the first one, more reverberation, very sweet sound Beautiful You know just how to play these guitars to make them sound so sweet! But again, I feel that Guitar 2 was the more expensive one because of the fuller sound, it felt as though it could play to a large audience without any electric amplification with ease. (Paused at 5:06 for my prediction!) Round 3 - Guitar 1: This one sounded muted to me, as though someone were holding felt or something to the strings AS you were playing it. Round 3 - Guitar 2: The sound of this one was much more full, much richer than the first guitar. The clarity of the notes was beautiful to my ear Decided at 7:44 Guitar 2 is the more expensive one. They're both beautiful, but #2 is the best. I can't believe it...I somehow picked out the most expensive one in every round. Perhaps don't put the expensive one as #2 every time? Either way I think I still would have picked them out XD The sound was just more vibrant, more Rich...just MORE in general than each of the guitar 1's. *EDIT: I feel that I got them right more because I use higher quality headphones. I use AKG K 240 Semi-Open Studio Headphones for everything on my computer, so perhaps that's why I was able to distinguish the sounds easier?

Sorry, I had to edit the spoilers out of my commment! Round 1 I was incorrect. I felt the trebles were harsher more expensive guitar; round 2 I was correct. The mids in particular were so warm. But 3x the price doesn't equate to either 3x value or (importantly) 3x tonal superiority to my ear - but that is inevitable once you get into the high price ranges, as the law of diminishing returns kicks in; Round 3 I was incorrect! I even went back and listened again unblinded, but I still found the ringing trebles of (10x!) less expensive unbeatable. Is it just taste? I did a similar blind comparison on a violin site and got 4 out of 5 right, so I don't think I just have tin ears. Amazed by test 3. Thanks so much for doing this (and the previous 2).

That was surprisingly easier than I thought. All correct. The only trap was the urge to focus on the full, strong sound. I learned that it's a trap on previous parts of this series. That sensation seems to be dominated by bass, and while it sounds convincing, it doesn't have to be all that expensive to achieve - I'd say it could have led to maybe even two errors. Focusing instead on the clarity of sound in all registers and overall balance of tone works much, much better. Probably it wouldn't be better than judging playability in a longer series of tests, but judging playability doesn't work over internet.

Listening through DT880s. First impressions: Test 1: Guitar 2 was more resonant and had a nice high end and better sustain. The bass didn't sound quite as full but it sounded more clear. First guitar sounded great though and it wasn't a night and day difference, at least through headphones. Test 2: Guitar 1 sound like it possibly had more sustain, but it was honestly surprisingly close. Second guitar sounded slightly more mid-rangey and focused. Hard to tell honestly and I'm sure there are some limitations when it comes to recorded vs live. Both sounded great but got this one wrong. Test 3: Guitar 2 sounded more full, and the low end in particular sounded exquisite by comparison. The whole range sounded incredibly well balanced. Big, noticeable difference with this one.

To me the note clarity of the more expensive guitar seemed to be very obvious in rounds 2 and 3. The less expensive ones seemed comparatively muffled and a bit muddy. In the first round I couldn't really guess. I thought both of those Alvarez-Yairi builds sounded very nice for the price though and both seemed to have a big bass response. I think the Fleta showed why it was the most highly valued guitar in this group. I thought it was the absolute standout without question.

Great series of video. I hope we see more content like this. I bet it will be amazing to have a shop like the one from Marshall's just a few blocks away from your home, place you study or work. I would probably ask for work there lol, I could even beg for it. Cheers from Argentina!

1 i guessed right and honnestly after 5k price range and up i did not hear any difference. found the "cheaper" of the 2 sound better in round 2&3 ... but what do i know. i only have a cheap inear buds what came with some cellphone. but the best sounding of them all was that limited edition guitar the 25 out 25 one in part 2. that thing was amazing

Great video Brandon ❤. I can hear a subtle difference in the sound which is more expensive and which is cheaper. All guitars sound beautiful, but the last guitar surprised me with the price.

Round 1: Guessed correctly based on the fuller, but not muddy, low-mids and more articulated highs. I preferred the sound of the more expensive. Round 2: Guessed correctly based on the brighter sound, cleaner attack, and longer sustain. I preferred the sound of the more expensive. Round 2: Guessed correctly but it was a harder decision. They were very similar in most qualities with brightness being the only major standout difference. I preferred the sound of the less expensive.

I went 3 for 3. The first set was the easiest for me to tell a difference on. The second I had to sit with for a while, and the last I actually preferred the less expensive guitar's sound, but gambled and got lucky. Frankly, if it weren't for the rarity of that '62 in the last pair, I expect the Hill Signature would have been the more expensive guitar. So, 3 for 3 choosing correctly, but my ear was only about 1.5/3. I preferred the more expensive model once, was mostly indifferent once, and preferred the less expensive guitar once.

The first two tests were pretty easy. But the 3. was really strange. I liked the first one more. But maybe just because it suited the song better.

2 out of three. In the first round. I thought the first guitar sounded better and I still do! Great series!!!!! Thanks…

Oh yeah, 3/3! The last one was difficult though, for me they sounded so similar but the more expensive one had a bit more sustain to it. Round 2 was such a huge difference between the guitars, I was surprised. I much preferred the winner there.

I found round 2 more difficult because of the predominance of the treble in the Ashokan Farewell...needed to hear a bit more bass!

I don't know how i got all right, especially being a banjo player myself, the more expensive ones just sounded so much better than the cheaper ones, which also sounded amazing.

I got none right, but I was voting based on which I liked more and not which was likely more expensive. Interesting how similar the comparisons sounded in each round. The last round having such an expensive guitar was such a shocker. Loved this series!

I don’t know anything about guitars and am so impressed that I can tell the difference. The better ones have a beautiful lingering over the other. So impressive.

Ha! The two guitars in round three sounded almost exactly the same to my ear...and I certainly couldn't tell you which was the more expensive...!!! I think I might just be wasting my time here!!!! Nice playing though, dude...

Interesting. The first two were pretty easy to nail. The third was tricky, and I did prefer the sound of the cheaper (but still quite expensive) guitar (and failed the test). All in all, it seems like guitar prices are reasonably rational.

First round, both sounded great, but nr2 was slightly better. 2'nd, hand down nr. 2 all the way. The difference was insane 3'th sound difference, but was not sure if I preferred any of them above the other. Ended picking nr. 2 again

I got three out of three, but honestly, number 1 was close--a guess really. It was therefore a treat to be reminded of my Yairi guitar I used fifty years ago, before I acquired my hand-made guitar from Michael Schreiner. The other two weren't so hard to judge--depth and cohesiveness of tone declared themselves in both cases. However, if you decide to do this again, I would really encourage you to use serious classical guitar compositions to demonstrate the instruments. If you're going to employ a transcription, let it be Bach, not Chopin. Anyway, thanks for the flutter, gentlemen, it's been really stimulating in all three iterations.

Great fun... thanks for the blind comparisons! I got 3 out of 3 correct. My focus was on the bass response and the bell like tones of the treble notes.... beautiful playing and great guitars! 👍

This was a cool test. I got it right on rounds 1 and 3. I thought in those rounds that the more expensive guitars had noticeably more clarity and fullness of sound (and a better balance between those things - in both cases the more expensive guitar had nice, clear treble response while remaining very rounded and full-sounding). In the second round, I thought that the cheaper guitar had less treble response and was therefore slightly less clear, but I thought it sounded fuller, whereas the more expensive guitar sounded a bit thin to me, particularly in the higher register, so I got that one wrong and thought the cheaper guitar was more expensive. I am not a classical guitarist, so it was really interesting to try and identify this stuff based on a limited knowledge of classical guitar tone.

In Round #1 in preferred Guitar #2 for its clarity on the inner strings/voices. In Round #2, I didn't like Guitar #1, as the trebles sounded thin and scratchy. Maybe something weird in the KZbin compression. I listened on Studio Monitoring Headphones. In Round #3, Guitar #1 sounded a bit muffled and indistinct in the bass. Guitar #2 was beautiful sounding, powerful, balanced, deep clear basses, vibrato and trebles sang out. I made a Classical Guitar with a Luthier that owned a Fleta, and it was stunning, like in the video, same gorgeous tonality. The guitar itself felt physically big, heavy, rigid, and felt somewhat crudely made, not highly refined craftsmanship. But, the sound was big, powerful, lyrical, made for the Concert Stage, and the best sounding Classical Guitar I think I ever played - A truly wonderful instrument.

I got the last two right, missed the first one but also had a hard time deciding between the two first guitars. I thought the bass reverb on the first guitar was more interesting, but the sound was slightly clearer on the second guitar, so I gave the first the win for the unique bass and how it made the music sound more unique over the clarity difference, since both sounded good.
