Engine build series following the build of a Ducati Testastretta 749 engine from a collection of parts
In this episode I put together the bottom end of the engine, setting in new bearings, measuring end float and assembling all the cases
If you have watched my tech guide video on crank shimming you may want to skip 6.33 - 15.12 as this was the footage used for that video
This engine was fitted across the 996R, 998R, 749 and 999 range of bikes
Later videos will show the adding of the cylinders, setting up the valve clearances, fitting of all the side covers before fitting and setting up the new belts

I'm diving into the rebuild of my PS1000 motor that dropped a valve and destroyed the H head/piston/barrel and rod (no, I did not do the valves...). I'm reasonably competent having worked on engines for decades, but this will be my first case split. It seems to be very straight forward. With 5K miles on it, my aim is to pull the crank, have it inspected/lightened/balanced and reassemble. These videos are awesome!

Great Video! Would love to hear more comments that start from the basics: what the part is, what it does, how it fits into the entire function of the engine, as well as what other Ducati's models it is part of.

Great video as always. Thanks for your efforts. i do have a question about the installation of the oil pump at around the 17 minute mark. You loosened the nut on the gear that drives the oil pump. This isnt necessary for simply installing the oil pump is it? I am having problems getting oil pressure after a top end rebuild and I wonder if it doesnt have something to do with the orientation of the pump gear to the drive gear.

Which of you engine build videos would be best to reference for an 1198 engine build? 749 or 848 videos? I didn’t find any builds you’ve done for 1198 or 1098. Thx!

The 848 video would be very similar to a 1198. The key differences being the timing of the cams would be different and the belt fitting process is slightly different due to the tooling and cam location for timing.

I'm ok with all of the talking. I appreciate the explanation. I'm just sorry about the the video getting corrupted during the flywheel installation, and crank shimming part.

Hello Nellie! I’m a big fan of your vid’s/ work and learned a lot abaut Ducati’s and the Deso engine! Big thank’s for that!!!I’m currently in rebuilding a 999 deep sump engine, and I want to change the main crankshaft ballbearings! My question is, where do you purchase the bearings, is there another maybe cheaper way than buy it directly from Ducati oem parts? Do these bearing have a normal serial Nr.? Thank you Whit kind regards Georg

Hi GY Fekete, I get my bearings from different sources to get them at the lowest prices. There are a lot of bearing supply companies in the UK to do this. I use "simply Bearings" "123 Bearing" "Lancashire Bearings" Most you can get cheaper than ducati, the main bearings are about the same price, sometimes you can get deals. To select the correct bearing you will find the bearing size and type on one side of the bearing. As an example is might say 6003-C3 - it is important they are correctly matched as the type of bearing determines its construction, material and speed rating etc etc Hope that helps

Correct me if I am wrong but I am guessing that those cases could likewise be use to build an 821.

I think the 821 uses the later bottom end found on the 848/1098 bikes bit other than the case themselves its the same process to build them up.

You are correct. It looks like the 821 was the result of tweaking the bore and stroke for torqe in the streetbikes.

Hi mate. What is the black fluide you put before the bearings ? With the green label . Did you heard about the issue when the bearings slide and turn into his place ? So I damaged the pipe and the case :( So on my next set up I would like to put a special glue.

Hi Romain, It is a bearing and bush sealant, it helps lock the bearing in place to stop it spinning, a bit like thread lock but for bearings.

After all the arithmetic and need to calculate proportionate shim allocation … you ignore that and go 50:50 allocation with 2mm each side? What did I miss?

Long winded but here I go 😊😊 Just realised that the section in the video was corrupted and left out me explaining why I used the 2 x 2mm shims in detail. So the calcs showed I needed 4.21mm made up of 1.88mm on one side and 2.33mm the other. You have to remember that the shims will be providing preload so once installed there is no way to check the calcs. By using 2mm each side I can put the engine together and check end float mentioned at 14:14 to see what I have left. When I measure the float at 15:04 (This bit did survive) I had just over 0.1mm float. i.e. 4.1mm gap including the shim stack. By then applying the 1.9mm and 2.35mm shims (as provided by calc) I would have used as closest shims I now know through measurement and clearance check with smaller shims that I would be applying at least 0.15mm of preload to the crank bearings as I was after. Hope that makes sense, thought that made it into the video but clearly did not. The reason I was still released the video with this commentary gap is that there is a specific video on crank preload I made earlier that i reference in the description.

Hi TheTennesseeTittyTickler, Yes no timing chain, belts only and only assist springs not conventional valve springs due to the Desmo system.
