Tested: Fujinon's 18-55mm Cinema Lens

Adam Savage’s Tested

7 жыл бұрын

Joey tests and reviews the Fujinon MK 18-55 zoom lens, which is notable for its price as a entry-level cine lens. Using it on a variety of location shoots and Tested productions, Joey demonstrates how professional cinema lenses operate and perform differently than still photography lenses for video, and why you would want to use one on your camera.

I owned one of these in X mount when I shot on fuji, so when I moved to Red, I had to buy two of these (the two ranges) because these lenses perform so well, and my guilty pleasure is the crash zoom in narrative.

Very good assessment of Gear. Unlike popular claim, not every piece of gear has to do everything and be for everyone. It is important to get the feedback from people who actually use the gear, no just a youtuber in a room somewhere. Both points of views complete the picture.

Hey there! Do you recommend the MKX 18-55mm or 50-135mm for a first cine lens? I have a 35mm already as well as an 80mm. Thoughts? This review has me leaning to the 18-55 but that 50-135 is wonderful and I feel gives a more cinematic look.

Hi Joey, thanks for the great tech videos you are producing. Could you add some detail to your future videos on computer (pc and mac) specs you recommend for professional video editing, as running programs like davinci and premier can be resource heavy and also whether you think spending money on a high end dedicated video card is necessary. Many thanks

Have you considered using the Sony 18-110mm zoom lens? It's a versatile lens, as well sharp and "cinematic." Might be a better option than the Canon for the FS5.

Guess I am just so accustomed to the crossover that I never thought so clearly about this. Good presentation and explanation. This said this lens adds depth to your work which has been lacking. The Sony hasn't changed that as I didn't notice any difference, perhaps keep working your lighting though this stand up looks great. Keep the lens, your work looks better for it!

This lens had me breathing heavily when it was announced, I would like to try it out on a smaller camera like the BMPCC, to see what it's like.
@MilkD2
@MilkD2 7 жыл бұрын
The only real difference is that the BMPCC is a 2x crop sensor, so the focal range will be around 26-75 (quick math don't hold me to it). You might also have a slightly sharper overall image, as the centre of the image circle tends to be sharper than the edges, especially when wide open. My personal recommendation would be to use it with a Metabones speed booster, you will regain use of the full image circle and gain 1 1/3 stop in the process, bringing this lens to like a t2.

Expected a little more from tested. This lens has a “Cine” designation which is really a marketing term, this lens can not be used on anything other than Sony video cameras, it has its own backfocus adjustment which is why it also features a macro function and as such is closer to a B4 mount television lens. “All still lenses are varifocal” what are you talking about? Arri made a S16 varifocal zoom lens which has multiple coloured distance scales for those variable focal lengths, still lenses are not varifocal lenses, at all, they have a single focus scale and most still zoom lenses hold focus through the range, I’m talking £200 sigma/tamron 17-50 lenses hold focus through the range but like most you didn’t mention backfocus and it’s importance to a zoom lens holding focus during a zoom or even to a prime lens hitting infinity. I take it you’re using a metabones adapter for the FS5? Pick up the Sigma MC-11, it has the correct FFD spacing and if by magic a vast majority of your stills lenses will now hold focus through the range which is all the parfocal designation means, it’s simply a measurement of how much the FFD changes during a zoom, + or - 5 microns and it’s out. You can probably have Adam make a custom shim to get your metabones adapter to line up, Adam Roberts of Barbill has a tutorial on his website. T stops are light transmission “compensated” F stops (ASC manual), F stops are absolutes but are mathematical formulas, T stops are based on light transmission but are not rated in Lux as that would be odd.

@EpictheEpicest 7 жыл бұрын
He says it and it's pictured at 14:01. The brand is "SHAPE", and it's not a full rig, just an extension arm with the stock remote control handle mounted on it. The Fs5 comes with a stock extension arm that doesn't cost extra, it just requires a screwdriver to adjust, whereas the SHAPE arm does not. The thing that looks like a shoulder rig is a backpack.

Oh hey, a 4K camera and 4K compatible lens but 1080 video LOL.... It would at least be nice if you linked us with some 4K test footage to see? Also keep in mind that most sony cameras like the FS5 do have the clear image zoom up to 1.6x or 1.8x I believe. That matched with the S35 sensor should give you a pretty good range added to the 18-55 range :)

This Fujinon zoom keeps focus regardless of the zoom movement such as the ENG zoom on TV camcorders. Designed for S35 or APS sensors and not Full Frame sensors, this zoom is too priced to be used in DSLRs or MirrorLess cameras with a value of 1k to 3k! Each one has his own criteria for what it can spend. Or you have professional movie cameras because that's your job or you're going to record wedding videos at a very high price to justify this investment! ...

By "ENG-style" you refer to a one man crew, right? Like what some indie documentary makers call "run and gun"?
@JimmySlaughter
@JimmySlaughter 7 жыл бұрын
ENG-style refers to a lens that you typically see on TV news cameras. They have the macro ring, but also a hand grip, which contains a zoom and iris servo. I'm surprised that this "zoom" lens did not have such a grip, especially since it's meant to be mounted on a Sony FS5 or FS7, where remote lens control is possible.

I don't agree. He's doing reviews from his perspective as a professional shooter. And actually that's a decent price for a quality cinema lense. I'm going to take one for a ride. And here's a tip. A quality lense will last you for years and thru many camera systems. Good shooters often have a carefully collected hoard of good glass that they protect like gold.

Aside form the price the highlights seem strange to me. It reminds me of video quality in movies form the `90s. I don't know it is due to more dynamic range or less (i presume less) but it is unpleasant for me. It has a metalic quality if that makes sense. And maybe there are some chromatic aberrations on the highlight. The Canon lens looks more natural in my opinion. Regarding the price i heard that second hand cine lenses can be found for $2000-$3000 in the US and if this things are so serviceable i don't see why not pay $3000 for a lens that was $10000 new instead of paying $4000 for the "cheap" version.
