Thank you so much for this supply list! I'm not a spaceship builder, but the easy of use of the styrene was catching my attention as I use cardboard, paperboard, and a little bit of solid wood to make doll houses and the like, but with the damage to my spine these materials are incredibly difficult to work with. Most days I can't stand the amount of hunching over, making the same cut again and again and again to cut the whole way through making projects take literal ages. The fact that styrene scores and then snaps had me doing a happy dance.

Totally agreed. Imo, thats how creative minds are born. And creative minds is the one going to push humanity further at a correct direction. It help and let us think on how to develop ideas, concept, techniques or whatever. In my country, education are born by making us say A is A. Well, nothing wrong with that. Great thing about the way Adam works: he'l show you the little tricks and cheap tools that make everything work. A nice vacuform machine goes for ~$1k, but now we know (thanks to Adam) that you can build one yourself using common tools and items that can be acquired from any hardware store. Yeah, you can do things the hard way, but why do that when an inexpensive trip to a beauty supply store will net you the exact thing you need? Yeah, he has an awe-inspiring shop. Most of the tools he uses aren't all that fancy, and the really nice tools are highly specialized to make a certain task a little bit easier/faster (like a disc sander). Even his materials aren't often very exotic, most of this video was just using normal styrene sheet and weld glue.

You could swap the switch to a three position toggle for: 1. Heating On 2. Off 3. Vacuum On Would help to ensure you never blow a fuse... Use the other switch as a primary power.... Just a thought

If you change the two switches out of the vacuum former for a rotary switch you will be able to do that faster. Switch left: heater on. Switch center: machine off. Switch right: vacuum on. The heater and vacuum will never be on at the same time.

When I was in highschool I was in an engineering class (really just an advanced metals shop class) and my teacher suggested I look at a design/modeling program at one of the local colleges. I was of the mindset that I wanted to be an actual engineer and went down that path, just to change gears a few years later and end up in business and finance. I'm 41 now and think I'd probably be much happier had I followed my shop teacher's guidance. Being in his mid 40s at the time he saw the kind of work I gravitated towards in the shop and had the life experience to know there's more to life than a sizable paycheck. He was the smartest teacher I had (so much of what I leaned from him had applications far beyond that classroom), I just wish I had been smart enough to listen.

I think if you're going for this kind of look, 3D printers would have a hard time creating comparable results.

@18:11 Adam's advise at this point is spot on for so many different things. I utilize it mostly for cutting metals with a cutoff wheel. Score your line with the wheel then start cutting. It will make a world of difference with the quality of cut.

@@Gaolii there's replicating, and there's seeing what could be improved and doing it. A DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) Center Off switch would make it easier to use. Up for heat, center for off, down for vacuum.

Thanks Adam. Great video. I've been making spaceship models out of plastic scrap for about 20 years and I've learned a thing or two from you. Printers are a wonderful source for oddly shaped parts. Electronic devices are not only a good source of material but also for LEDs, cables and switches of all kinds. I have never tried a vacuum machine but it is a good challenge for this coming year. The nail files I have used a lot. They are cheap and flexible and give a great touch. Normally with 3/4 types of glue, my set of blades and files and a soldering iron I solve practically everything. Any piece of plastic wherever it comes from can be part of a spaceship since imagination is the only limit.

Then you are missing out on like 80% of the information contained in the show. I admit that I was hooked by Adam, knowing him from Mythbusters and subscribed. Once I did though, I went and watched all the other builds done by other great model builders and I was way more impressed. No offense to Adam, buddy you are awesome and I know you know that lol You don't need me or anyone else to tell you that. If ya do, well I think a therapist might be a good idea. There are at least 4 or 5 other builders and 2 of them are women, which I think is sweet. They show you how to make things from water effects for dioramas, weathering techniques on Gundam models and ships, to large scratch built lights shaped like letters. You are seriously selling yourself short and kinda being trendy if you only subscribe to watch, as you see it, the star of a show. It's cool to get hooked but don't let it stop there. Explore the show. Watch the other vids as I did. Trust me you will learn some cool stuff and there are tons of moments of silence and just building. If that's what you like. Just subscribing to watch only Adam is kinda like taking a beat up old car to a famous hot rod shop, then requiring only the owner of that shop to build it. Not to mention that if you only watch one person build something, you will invariably only learn what that one person knows. Watch multiple builders and you will expand your knowledge base way more than you could just by watching one. All that said, I do love the one day builds and I agree that watching Adam build for 90+ minutes in real time would not be boring. I grew up on Mythbusters and watching Adam build was kinda the whole thing. Not to say Jamie was useless on the show, I should be punched in the face for just typing it, but Adam was more entertaining. Jamie works like I do, in silence. To the people who say Adam needs to have his own show and do more videos, more frequently; can you not see the gold band on his finger?! That means he is married and he most likely has a day job that does not include making videos for tested all day every day. He is only human, so give him a break and learn to enjoy what ya got. Rather than force your will into existence. I really wish the concept of manifest destiny had never been uttered way back when.

loved every minute of this. I'm into 3D modeling on the computer and I learn a lot from watching these videos. Even if you work digitally, there's a certain cleverness and creativity that can be learned from real world builders like Adam. He's a true professional when it comes to knowing each material needed for the job, his foresight and preparation in what he's going to build, down to his use of dialect in teaching others his process. Even his rushed, crazy-scientist moments of inspiration give great insight into why he's one of the greats. I learn a lot from your character and artistry Adam and I look forward to watching you create more.

I've done about 3 vacuform models in the past, one of them, a WWII Japanese bi-plane. I understand the sanding part to get the parts to fit together very well! I also enjoyed building them more than the regular plastic kits. The harder work to achieve the end made it more enjoyable to me. Thank you so much for showing and explaining this to all of us!

This is the coolest video I have ever seen. Long time fan. I desperately wanted to be a model builder for a living. I made some bad choices when I was young and so my life took a different path. People make fun of me for sitting in my garage building models as a near 40 year old man. I could literally do this all day everyday and be as happy as I've ever been. Thanks for the video man. I think I'm gonna go buy some styrene. 😀

This is actually the kind of thing I pop on in the garage when I'm working on a car or building something. It's either maker vids or try to let KZbin mix music for me. The latter rarely works well, it'll get stuck on one particular artist after awhile and then randomly jump into a genre I don't care for or have ever listened to.

Here in the UK--classes like metalwork, woodwork, electronics and graphics design, were all lumped together along with textiles and cooking, as "Design and Technology", or D&T. So my first memory of vacuum forming was actually creating a simple blinking LED (red and green) circuit with a switch. We had to vacuform the shell. Getting into plastic model kits several years ago, purchasing a 3D printer a month ago, and watching this video. It makes me want to add a vacuum former to my arsenal.
