I'm a fellow engineer, and please make no mistake. What they've done is akin a work of art. Not only does it fit all the criteria for a light saber, but it is actually blood boiling for something this complex and detailed to be compared to something as simple as a cigar torch. These people are essentially the "world's finest" in terms of lightsaber development, and if you want something better, give them a few million dollars or go find a Kyber crystal and another million and make your own.

I don't know why people downplay it like that, calling it a "neat lighter for cigars" (which an actual lightsaber also is); the engineering is insane and way more than a torch, especially now that it uses literal rocket science.

I've worked in a Class 100 clean room (with a Class 10 clean space within it*), so I know exactly how insane this accomplishment really is. Those things are expensive, both to build and maintain, but some of the most important science possible is being done within such facilities (as well as crazy engineering - my own focus was on the science stuff, but it's clear that James and Bogdan are using their facility to manufacture things that would be impossible to create in a non-clean environment). *It sounds like Hacksmith Industries built a Class 1000 clean room with a Class 100 space inside it, which is still wild.

And the oxygen path they took is among the "safest". They could get away with a longer and hotter flame that requires less pressure, say, with a mixture of oxygen and ozone, but it tends to spontaneously explode. And it gets worse from there, as we then get into fuels that are mixtures of fluorine and similar instead or propane. The issue really is in finding just the right combination of fuel and oxidizer. Evidently the technology in Star Wars was such that they had gas cylinders that they could just add and the ambient air itself was enough to start and fuel the reaction. (with some help - see below) These looked like what they had at the time - basically CO2 cylinders - but the understanding was that the materials science was advanced enough that 50 or 100K PSI tanks were common? lol. The reason they needed a "crystal" was because the crystals in their universe were also used as computers. Shows and movies of that era routinely used the idea of advanced civilizations using crystals for memory storage and computers. The reason was that the computer technology then was so cumbersome. An entire room to regulate what we consider to be simple engineering tasks. Memory chips were the size of a small candy bar. For not even 1K. Now you can fit more computing power than the first spacecraft inside your Apple charging cable - and it all be invisible. So you needed a small set of circuits, in essence, to regulate it all. Which is why they should absolutely eventually incorporate them, if needed. Embed it in a crystal for aesthetics, if they want? As for the "help" mentioned above, they also had power packs (essentially supercapacitors or batteries) because it's entirely possible that they were doing some sort of processing or compression of oxygen in real-time to start the whole thing off. They basically needed the fuel and the rest was handled or processed locally. Sorry, got a bit nerdy - lol - but I see them getting this amazingly close to the real thing in about 10 years.

Class 100 basically means there can't be more than 100 particles over 5 micrometer in size, per cubic feet. 5 microns is roughly the size of a small speck of dust.

I used to work with the emergency oxygen system on the CP-140 Aurora (P-3 Orion). I had a video from the US Navy that showed a catastrophic fire caused by contaminated fittings that we used to scare the new guys... Leak checks were always meticulous whenever we did any maintenance, and for good reason. Clean hands/gloves and clothing were a must.

Adam I work for a company uses pressurized O2 in hyperbaric chambers. Parts such as copper fittings had to be properly Oxygen Clean before they could be installed in the chambers. Pressurized O2 like liquid O2 is also very dangerous. Techs such as I, we tested each chamber properly before they shipped to location. Then service tech from the company installs all connections properly. Chambers are very neat medical equipment.

Self sustaining as long as you don’t run out of propane and liquid oxygen… The self sustaining part is the heating of the propane… the fire coming out of the end of it heats the coils, so the propane stays hot, and doesn’t freeze from the liquid oxygen…

He was clearly talking about the heating and cooling system not needing anything to continue working once it's going. It's an incredible achievement and being pedantic does nothing but diminish that fact.
