The mirrors in the top rack are a living testament to how incredible the people working in the special effects industry are. 99% of people just jam their hand in there or get a step stool.
@sundaynightdrunk11 ай бұрын
And if you think about the amount of time it would take to check each one when re-ordering stock by moving a step stool, they saved a ton of time putting the mirrors there, where one could just walk along and see what's low or empty and therefore what needed to be ordered. An elegant and creative solution to a problem that presented itself.

I work in sound for TV and will be implementing this on our setup if at all possible-- we have a whole wall of divided bins with transmitters, receivers, mics, cables, etc, and this is a brilliant, low cost, low tech way of checking what's available on the top few rows. Love it!

Keep your trousers on. It’s a very nifty idea by a short guy, and to have it preserved and shown to a huge audience in a video years later is the perfect way to celebrate it - but if you had come up with that and somebody called you “a living testament to how incredible the people working in the xyz industry are”, wouldn’t you assume they’re making fun of you?

I’m a hobby sfx artist and my husband is helping me build my own small workshop as an addition onto his tool shop this year. Through searching for organizational ideas, I found this video. I’m so glad I did. This gives me a deeper understanding of you as a person. You’ve saved pieces that to most, wouldn’t mean anything. But you see the true value because there is history attached to these items. I love that you’ve fabricated many items yourself or bought second hand. It’s the small details that no one sees that mean the most. It’s people like you that have made me have a passion for this type of work. Thank you so much for sharing.

Love the space. I love open areas. I would suggest one long wall of parts and material or one end all open and seen. With work space in middle. Then all the lathes, drill press, sewing station, table band saws, large tools organized in groups of use along one end or wall. I would have an area with hand power tools all in view, and battery packs ready to go. Being able to stand in the center and see everything will open up ideas. Hidden stuff is lost stuff, great to find but usually when you don’t need it. Allot of this you already have but just laid out to see it all. I would add if you have space a white board and bulletin board to work out project ideas and list projects. Like a visual working schedule of what needs to get done. What can be done, what needs parts…etc. also I would add a small table below with 6 to 10 bins for prepping components for projects. Projects 1-10. This helps put model kits and, small parts in one place so when you. Tackle it everything is there. Think of it like a shopping bin for 1 project. Just add a post it note for items that are too large to put in the bin and possibly have an area for them. This will give you an incredible flow for getting things done. Looking at your shop I would recommend org the ceiling items.

Renting out the front house covers the mortgage+some and I work full-time in the back garage. Had the power company install a separate meter (which they do for free). Got a strange look asking for 400amp service to the garage, but glad I did since 2-3 of us can work on different machines or weld at the same time with the AC running with no problems. I've loved your enthusiasm for even the simplest of things ever since I first started watching Mythbusters with my dad as a child. Seeing how the shop there was setup reminded me of my own basement/garage growing up, and that it didn't matter what we were working on, my dad could always just go back to his stacks of drawers and cabinets and open one seemingly at random and grab the exact nut/bolt/screw/piece of particle board that we needed to finish our project. Now that he's in his 70s and truly retired, he's slowly been going through it all, labeling and sorting as he goes. Getting rid of anything he know I'll never need once it all becomes mine. Seeing your shop infrastructure videos just makes me want to have a space like this, to tinker and build, and something I can eventually pass down to my own children in the future where they'll hopefully share the same desire to create and fix that a lot of us here have.

Hi Adam / Tested, a small suggestion for the architectural bits you mentioned (about glueing one of each item to the outside of the drawer) perhaps just snap a picture and affix that to the front. I’d imagine that those pieces are harder to come by now and you may have exact numbers, it seems a waste to glue one of each to the outside. But otherwise a great idea to make it a visual sorting / storage solution

Such a huge change, I had no idea you had that much room even when you had the display racks. Excited to see the projects that come out from the improved space.

Made me emotional watching this video! I have so many emotions at the same time. I am 60 in 1977 my eyes were so opened when Star Wars came out. ILM is a dream of mine that opened my heart and soul of what i wanted to do for the rest of my life! Your awesome Adam! You got to live and still do the Dream!

Hats off to Mrs Savage for calmly pointing out the obvious! My feeling is this is a woman with a bottomless pool of patience and understanding! Also love your enthusiasm for all the cool stuff and keeping these skills alive. Hard to believe they are now almost a lost art.

The reveal of that extra space literally made me say wow out loud, like actually jaw dropped wow. Those ILM Material shelves fit in there so bloody perfectly, they look so comfortable and at home. What a beautiful expansion to a legendary workshop

This is such an amazing creative space. And it's wonderful that you got to salvage such an important part of ILM. The mirrors under the bottoms of the shelves is just genius!

Adam, I recently just did a Mythbusters binge on Max and I love looking back on that time, watching you and the team with my kids, and how much you and the team shaped them as they grew into curious young men. They both look back on the show fondly as well. Keep making the world curious!

I had to pause this about ten minutes in just to say thank you for going out of your way to preserve something with so much history - and also giving it new life! Continually inspired by Adam and his experiences in this industry, and thankful that he’s so open to sharing it with us.

Watching Adam just exude such joy and happiness is cosmically infectious being here on the East Coast. I am in the process of making a 16x16 room in my home into my dream KZbin/Artist space. People like Adam, Martina for Nerd Forge or 10Hundrend in the last year have inspired me so much. Thank You.

Imagine loving something so much that you have a giddy appreciation for the shelves the parts to make that stuff was stored in. You are endlessly inspiring. How ILM made you feel as a kid is what you're doing for people now. I hope somebody makes a video one day about how they drove up to San Francisco to pick up the Adam Savage shelves. Thanks for everything

Your joy and passion makes me smile, so happy for you. An absolutely beautiful addition to your space ❤ Side note: I hope you place those long pieces of steel sticking out some place else. They are exactly at eye level next to the bathroom. From experience working in a hardware store, if I had not been wearing glasses, I would have sliced my eye on a steel plate sticking out of the rack.

Adam, you might say you want a museum. But listening to you telling stories about every item of that place you call a work place or storage is a museum and you are the curator. It's as always an inspiration to go on tures with you though the cave.

I actually laughed with you while watching this. I was BLOWN AWAY at the new shop!!!! I have watched so many of your videos and seen much of how it used to be...that when he turned the camera I litterally sat with my mouth open in awe!!! And to see your passion and you LOVE for the ILM stuff...really made every word of your stories about them so much more meaningful. THANK YOU, Adam, for sharing with us. This is why you are one of my favorite people / story tellers ever. Greg

I wonder if your wife knew that one day you'd need to expand your shop and having a display space was a beautiful way of reserving that until you were ready. I'm crying literal tears, I'm so happy for you and for the stories you're preserving

Adam, Please please please make sure you have a fire prevention system set up ! Where are all the fire extinguishers? Do you have WiFi enable smoke alarms? Your shop is absolutely amazing and should have all safety measures in place.

Shop infrastructure is some of my favourite content on this channel. I didn't realise that's what this video would alude to, so it took me a week to get around to watching this video. I need to binge all of the past shop infrastructure videos to prime myself for what's to come. I'm happy for you and the people you share this space with.
