Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Tabletop Maker's Vise!

Adam Savage’s Tested

3 жыл бұрын

Adam adds a new vise to his workbench: a versatile Instrument Maker's Vise designed to grip flat or cylindrical workpieces at different precise angles. This vise is actually a kit from Hemingway, and putting it together becomes a machining adventure unto itself! But the journey is well worth it as Adam couldn't be happier with the finished kit and the machining lessons and experience he gained along this build!

Maybe Universal got a little IP anxiety? One could argue that (and I would agree with them) how can someone claim ownership of a dinosaur form and the puppetry to make it a human wearable custome? While that sounds like a healthy to have and even winnable argument, if my guess is correct, it would be against the team of lawyers specializing in IP protection that a company like Universal must employ. To me that sounds like a very very very expensive and long long long argument to potentially win.

Taking the time to step up drill bit sizes to the final hole always drove my boss batty for the extra time it took; also, "Why was I always asking for new 1/16" bits?" [mostly dealing with fairly precise adaptations/modifications of plastic enclosures by hand - though sometimes aluminum, occasionally steel] Also, starting smaller can let you correct any mistakes; if the hole goes out of round or you find it off-center, you still have the material to file/carve/etc. the hole back on center allowing the next bit(s) to bring it back into compliance. Yet I never heard a complaint about my results... or a compliment that 99 44/100% of time I didn't have to start over with new material. Top 5 reasons for the fails I did have: 1) Being rushed. 2) Cheap plastic that was laminated in the casting process & peeled. (Can also be caused by #4) 3) Being in a hurry. 4) Dull drill bits. (they wander) 5) Not taking the time to do it right. Last bit of advice - for sheet metal and thin panels, step bits are your friend. (I still start with 1/16" pilot, and work my way up to the 3/16" or matching "starting" dia. of the step bit as needed.)

Can you imagine not knowing One Day Builds exist and then finding them organically and having days worth of videos to watch for the first time? That would be amazing!

Space Cowboys is on TV tonight in the UK, well, Scotland (on ITV4), am doing my damnedest to spot the Universal Greeblie right now :) I'd like to say thanks to you Adam and to all of the crew at Tested who make this channel possible. Thanks for keeping us all entertained during the pandemic, I've enjoyed many many hours of watching your stuff over the last year, I can tell it's a lot of hard work, and war wounds :-o. I hope things get back to normal for us all soon. I know you have a gazillion projects all going on at once but I would love to see you do an Aliens APC scratch build at some point in the future. All the best.

Something I used that made my life so easy was a Tail Stock Die holder, made doing external threads a breeze.

Adam could use a new hand die holder. That one he has is the cheapest of the cheap.
