I had one tell us that someone got caught buying weed, and it was like 'good news is, you're off the hook. bad news is that's because it's not weed, it's cow dung' and I think DARE officers just come in and tell tall tales because they're bored. but it also got me thinking about how some crimes are still crimes if you THINK you did it, and others aren't.

I can't even imagine how furious Jamie would have been if you smeared poo on his monitor. One of the most memorable moments of the show, in my opinion, was how he reacted when you smeared oil all over his bathroom. How to manufacture emotional stakes: 1) A few weeks before hand, get Jamie to show off a glass trinket that he just inherited from XYZ and is "really important to him." 2) Get Kari, Grant, and Tory to go into Jamie's office to steal the $20. 3) On one occasion, have the glass trinket 'fall' and break. 4) Test them before they can tell Jamie, but test them about the trinket, instead of the money. Bonus points if you make sure that the next person to go into Jamie's office sees the 'evidence of the crime' and needs to be questioned on what they know.

One unethical way is to inflict “pain” in the event of a “fail”, so if the person is caught in a lie, they have to smell something horrible, get a shock (Adam would probably never want the prank shock he got from the “ark” ever again), do something that induces sickness (being spun around, eat something nasty), or suffer isolation. There’s often a question in terms of study approvals of whether or not it’s possible for people to legitimately consent (particularly if it’s their job) and there often real dangers associated even with seemingly benign punishments-such as PTSD and anxiety. This is why we will almost certainly never be able to do Milgrim’s studies again.

The opposite could also invoke an emotional/stressful desire to cheat the test though. A cash reward within the budget of a TV show (few thousand?) Would be life-changing for many people and would give good incentive to want to cheat the test.

You say that, but just recently there was a study done on autistic children that involved repeatedly scaring them with different stimuli between breaks of playtime. Many, MANY autistic people spoke out against it saying that many of the stimuli included in the test would cause long-term damage to the participants and moreover there wasn't really a way for children to consent to that.

@@cenciende9401 Why the animosity? It's just a measuring system, you act like it killed your father and had its way with your mother. I would guess based on the tone of your post that you think the US doesn't adopt metric out of some sort of obstinate national pride, that isn't at all the case. There's very good practical reas mon why the US still uses imperial for everyday use, it would cost trillions to reconfigure the entire country for metric, just changing all the signs on the tens of thousands of miles of Interstate would have an astronomical price tag, let alone all of industry, all the factories, machines etc. Almost everything that requires or benefits from using metric in the US does so anyways, mainly scientific fields. Even the imperial units are based on metric standards as well. But for things like construction it's just not enough of a benefit to offset the massive costs of reconfiguring an entire industry.

The myth of a functional lie detector test is really the power that it has. If you believe someone knows if you are telling the truth or not, it influences you and makes it harder for you to be as good of a liar as you might otherwise be I think.

They're really good at measuring physiological stress response. If you can lie without stress, then you can beat it. And if you're super stressed even telling the truth under polygraph, which I probably would be, then that could complicate things somewhat.

Just watched this. It's so great to hear you talk about the show. I think why the show was so good was the personalities of everyone envolved . Also you can tell how much passion and real reactions everyone had toward each project. I always loved how Jamie would be pleased with the results and you Adam were just full blown enthusiastic of the result. Two very different personalities that was interesting to see how you guys would react to the outcome of a myth. I remember when they did the episode about beating a brain scanner that was used for lie detection, the stakes were that the people who didn't beat it had to go back to SF on a bus. The lab that they were shooting in was (I think) in Florida, or at least on the east coast.

That was part of the lie detector episode. Part 1 was beating a conventional lie detector. Part 2 was beating a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imager (FMRI). Part 1's stakes were 1st class tickets for the next MB air travel or having to wash, wax and polish the MB production crew's cars while Part 2's stakes were 1000$ cash or a 3,077 mile bus trip back to SF.

For me I enjoyed the two myths in season 7 involving Dumpster Diving and Deep Sea Diving. But between the two myths, I enjoyed the myth where an air supply failure could result in a body getting sucked up into the helmet. That was the myth Kari, Grant, and Tori did

Fun story about the time I got a lie detector test for a job. It was for driving an armored car and as you can imagine we would be handling a lot of money so they had this test done. During the test the administrator repeatedly asked me if I had ever been arrested. He asked me other questions like had I stolen things and I ever done drugs and I ever driven drunk? The answer is unequivocally no but he kept asking me if I had ever been arrested. For the record I have never even come close. When he finished the test and un- hooked everything, he asked; " I have your background check right here and it doesn't show anything but have you ever been arrested?" I told him no, why? He said that every time he asked me that question my heart rate would jump. I'm not going to lie I'm a pretty upstanding person I work in security now, And I told him that even the thought of that was terrifying to me. But, It occurred to me to ask if the mere thought of one of the things he was asking is enough to make your heart rate spike out of fear, Couldn't that happen to anyone for any question based on personal fears and wouldn't that basically invalidate the test? He gave me a really dirty look and never said another word to me as he left. Tl;dr Adam is completely correct the tests are shite.

in a way i'm lucky because all the science teachers i've had were so cool science and art are the only classes that i'm really excited to got to i remember one day my science teacher was going to set up some kind of experiment and he ask me to come early to help him i skipped lunch for that and i don't regret it the guy even showed us random magic tricks unfortunately he's now a principal and doesn't teach anymore but i'm happy for him and all my science teacher also they're the ones i learned about mythbusters from i didn't know it was a thing untill we watched it class it was cool.

I have one, too. It's like a layer of plastic wrap made of neoprene... it's weird. (driving school instructor's shirt. most tracks require long sleeves, and we do this shit on 100F days -- of course, we race in fire suits in similar conditions.)

I had a good friend who was a guard at Statesville Prison in IL. He told us about a toilet paper rope they found during a cell search that they tested. This was back in the early 1990’s. They looped it over a bar and swung on it. So when it was being tested on Mythbusters I knew it was going to work. Miss the show.

For the lie detector emotional component, I would have had a series of questions in which one person (possibly you) would know the answers. Their goal was to lie about some of them that you select. For every lie they could not get away with, they would have to hold their hand in a box. Inside that box...something creepy that they are terrified of. That way, they know if they don't succeed in that lie, they will have to do something they absolutely are terrified of.

Yes it was great to see their response with the blue ice. But the response for the engineers that the Mythbusters performed that experiment to prove how and could make that blue ice hail stone. That was outstanding.

There is a reason that in a lot of (most) other countries lie detectors are not allowed to be used in an official court case. That's not a matter of not believing in it, just hard science.

Reminds me of the time Adam actually got pissed off at the other three when they were testing some kind of divine intervention if you placed your hands on two golden statues but they rigged it to send a small electric shock and asked Adam to test it out. Adam was not impressed lol. One of the few times you saw him genuinely angry on the show.
